Without surgical intervention, the average life expectancy of a patient is only six weeks, and even if the surgery is successful, the time it can add to a patient's life only ranges from twelve to eighteen months.

Those who can survive five years after receiving surgery represent only 6% of all patients who have undergone the procedure.
