Chapter 13: Chapter 13: First Practice, New Challenges
Adrian's first day of basketball practice at Westbrook High felt like stepping into a whole new world. The gym was massive, with polished floors that gleamed under bright lights and walls adorned with championship banners. The smell of fresh wax and faint hints of sweat filled the air. As Adrian stepped onto the court, he felt a familiar excitement coursing through him. This was where he thrived.
The rest of the team was already warming up, and the sound of sneakers squeaking against the floor mixed with the rhythmic thuds of basketballs. Adrian noticed the players casting curious glances his way, whispering among themselves.
"That's the kid who won nationals in middle school," someone muttered.
"Let's see if he's actually good or just hype," another said.
Adrian kept his face neutral, but inside, he was already planning how to prove himself.
Meeting the Coach
"Alright, bring it in!" a commanding voice called out. Adrian turned to see a tall, broad-shouldered man with a whistle around his neck. Coach Ramsey had the kind of presence that demanded attention. His sharp eyes scanned the team as they gathered around.
"Before we get started, we've got a new addition," Coach Ramsey said, nodding toward Adrian. "Adrian Dunphy. You've probably heard of him. National champ, MVP, all that good stuff. But let me make one thing clear."
Coach Ramsey turned to Adrian, his gaze piercing. "None of that matters here. This is high school ball, and everyone earns their spot. Got it?"
Adrian nodded, meeting the coach's eyes. "Yes, Coach."
"Good. Now let's see what you've got," Ramsey said, blowing his whistle to signal the start of drills.
Drills and Tensions
The team started with layup lines, and Adrian immediately stood out. His movements were smooth, efficient, and precise. Teammates watched as he effortlessly switched between left-handed and right-handed layups, finishing each one with a soft touch off the glass.
As the drills progressed, Adrian's skill became undeniable. His passes were sharp, his footwork flawless, and his basketball IQ shone through. But not everyone was impressed.
"Big deal," muttered Jason, a senior forward known for his ego as much as his skills. "Let's see how he handles some real pressure."
During a scrimmage, Jason took it upon himself to guard Adrian. He played aggressively, bumping Adrian at every opportunity and talking trash.
"You think middle school trophies mean something here?" Jason sneered after a particularly hard foul.
Adrian didn't respond. Instead, he let his game do the talking. On the next possession, Adrian executed a perfect crossover, leaving Jason stumbling, before driving to the basket for an and-one layup. The gym erupted with cheers and laughter.
Jason scowled, but Coach Ramsey clapped his hands. "That's what I like to see! Keep it up, Dunphy."
A Surprise Audience
Midway through practice, Adrian noticed two familiar figures leaning against the gym doors. Dylan and Cole Sprouse had shown up, their presence instantly causing a stir among the other players.
"What are they doing here?" one of Adrian's teammates whispered.
"Just here to support our guy," Dylan said loudly, grinning as he waved at Adrian. "No pressure, MVP!"
Cole smirked. "We'll rate your performance later. Hope you've got some highlight-reel material."
Adrian shook his head, smiling despite himself. Their antics lightened the mood, and even Coach Ramsey couldn't help but chuckle. "You better give them something to cheer about, Dunphy," he said.
By the end of practice, Adrian had not only proven himself but also earned the respect of most of his teammates. Even Jason begrudgingly nodded at him as they walked off the court.
"You're good," Jason admitted. "Still hate how much attention you get, though."
Adrian laughed. "Fair enough."
Back at Home
At dinner that night, Adrian's family was eager to hear about his first practice. Phil, of course, was the most animated.
"So, did you dunk on anyone? Did you pull off any crazy moves?" Phil asked, miming a fadeaway jumper.
"It was good," Adrian said, keeping it simple. "Coach is tough, but fair. And the team's solid."
"Did those twins show up?" Haley asked, scrolling through her phone. "Saw them post something about you on Instagram."
Adrian groaned. "Of course they did."
Jay, ever the pragmatist, chimed in. "Good. Let them talk. The more people know your name, the better it is when scouts come around."
Gloria nodded enthusiastically. "Jay's right! You keep working hard, and you'll be the best. Just don't let those other boys distract you."
Manny, always eager to contribute, said, "If you need help staying focused, I can lend you my meditation app."
Cam and Mitchell, who had stopped by for dinner, added their own flair to the conversation.
"Adrian, we're so proud of you," Cam gushed. "Do you know how rare it is to be this good at something so young? You're a prodigy!"
"Let's not inflate his ego too much," Mitchell said with a smile. "But seriously, great job, Adrian."
Adrian looked around the table, taking in the mix of pride, advice, and humor. His family's chaotic energy was exactly what he needed after a long day.
