Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Backyard Barbecue
The morning sunlight streamed through the windows of Jay and Gloria's house, casting a warm glow over the sprawling backyard. Jay stood on the patio, arms crossed and surveying the pristine grill as though it were a prized possession. Today was special, and though he'd never admit it aloud, he was excited. Adrian's recent basketball showcase victory had given him an excuse to gather everyone for a barbecue, and while Jay would never be the sentimental type, this felt like the perfect moment to celebrate his grandson's achievements.
"Jay, are you sure you don't want me to take over?" Gloria's voice called from the kitchen, her Colombian accent sharp as ever.
"It's a barbecue, Gloria, not one of your gourmet cooking shows," Jay shot back, though there was no real bite to his words.
Gloria emerged, carrying an enormous platter of marinated meat. "You say that, but everyone loves my empanadas more than your burgers," she teased, her fiery energy filling the space. Behind her trailed Manny, who carried an unnecessarily detailed clipboard with the "BBQ Agenda" meticulously outlined.
"Manny, put that away. It's a barbecue, not a corporate retreat," Jay muttered, shaking his head. But Manny was unfazed, launching into a detailed explanation of why a timeline was crucial to a successful event.
Adrian was the first to show up, driving his sleek new car into the driveway with a grin. He parked, and the sound of laughter and chatter followed as Dylan and Cole tumbled out of the backseat, each holding armfuls of snacks.
"Look at this spread! Jay's got the works," Dylan announced, sniffing the air dramatically.
"Let's not oversell it," Cole deadpanned, adjusting his sunglasses. "But I am expecting something Instagram-worthy."
Adrian rolled his eyes. "You two are hopeless."
Moments later, another car pulled up, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner stepped out, dressed impeccably as always. Kendall carried a box of fancy desserts, while Kylie smirked, looking around the yard with an approving nod.
"Nice place," Kylie remarked as she joined Adrian and the twins. "Bet Jay's been up since dawn polishing that grill."
"You'd win that bet," Adrian replied with a laugh.
Gloria bustled out to greet them. "Ah, you're here! Let me take those desserts. Oh, they're so small… are they supposed to be this small?" she asked Kendall, who blinked, momentarily flustered.
"It's, um, artisanal," Kendall explained.
"Artisanal? Hm. Okay." Gloria turned and called, "Jay! They brought fancy desserts. Don't drop them like last time!"
As the younger crowd mingled, the rest of the family showed up in typical Dunphy fashion: loud and chaotic. Phil was the first through the gate, carrying a ridiculously oversized cooler. "This right here is my secret weapon for the ultimate barbecue," he declared proudly.
Claire followed close behind, rolling her eyes. "Phil, it's just soda and ice. Not exactly groundbreaking."
"Details, Claire! Details," Phil replied, undeterred.
Haley trailed behind, already on her phone, while Alex carried a book, clearly trying to pretend she wasn't part of the event. Luke, meanwhile, had managed to find a stick and was using it to poke at a random patch of dirt.
"Luke, stop that! You're going to disturb something," Claire scolded.
"Like what? Bugs?" Luke shot back, grinning.
Adrian waved them over. "Hey, guys. Glad you could make it."
Haley looked up from her phone and smirked. "Of course. How else would this party be interesting?"
The group decided to kick things off with cornhole, splitting into teams. Adrian teamed up with Kendall and Kylie, while Dylan and Cole joined forces against them.
"This is serious business," Dylan announced, adjusting an imaginary tie. "We're here to win."
"I'm not sure cornhole has winners, Dylan," Cole said, tossing a beanbag with perfect precision.
Adrian laughed. "That's rich, coming from the guy who keeps score in Uno."
Meanwhile, Gloria and Manny tried to join in, but Manny's overly analytical approach quickly annoyed everyone. "If you adjust your angle by 15 degrees, you'll optimize your trajectory," he said earnestly.
"Manny, stop!" Gloria snapped. "This is supposed to be fun!"
Nearby, Jay watched the game with a beer in hand. He called out to Adrian, "Don't let these clowns distract you. Keep your eye on the target, kid!"
Back at the grill, Phil insisted on helping Jay, much to Jay's dismay. Predictably, Phil accidentally burned one batch of burgers, setting off a small plume of smoke.
"Relax, Jay! It's just extra flavor," Phil said nervously, trying to fan the smoke away.
Jay glared at him. "Flavor? You call this flavor?"
Dylan wandered over and sniffed the air. "Smells like a cooking show gone wrong."
"You're not helping," Jay snapped.
As the food was finally served and everyone gathered around the table, the atmosphere shifted to something warmer. Jay, always gruff but secretly sentimental, raised his beer bottle.
"To Adrian," he said. "You've worked hard, and it's paying off. Keep your head on straight, and you'll go far. Cheers."
The group echoed his sentiment, clinking glasses and plates. Adrian, slightly embarrassed but grateful, smiled. "Thanks, everyone. It means a lot."
Gloria chimed in. "And don't forget, mi amor, you always have us to support you. Even if Jay burns all the food!"
Everyone laughed, the light-hearted moment perfectly capping off the day.
As the sun set and the group began to wind down, Gloria insisted on a group photo. It quickly turned into a fiasco as Dylan and Cole couldn't stop making funny faces, and Luke tried to photobomb every shot.
"Just one serious photo, por favor!" Gloria pleaded.
Adrian shook his head, laughing as the camera finally clicked. As he looked around at his chaotic but supportive family and friends, he couldn't help but feel grateful. Between the laughter, the teasing, and the heartfelt moments, he knew he was exactly where he belonged.
The journey ahead might be challenging, but with this group by his side, he felt unstoppable.
