Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Middle School - The First Game
The morning of Adrian's first game started like any other chaotic day in the Dunphy household.
"Adrian, your bag's packed, right?" Claire called from the kitchen, frantically assembling sandwiches for the family. She was wearing her "Game Mom" sweater, the same one she wore to Haley's old cheer competitions.
"Yes, Mom!" Adrian yelled from upstairs, his voice slightly muffled. He was lacing up his shoes, the faint hum of his pre-game playlist filling the room. Daphne's voice chimed softly in his mind.
"Hydration is key. Your stats are optimal, but fatigue may lower stamina by 5% in the second half if not properly addressed."
Adrian smirked, grabbing his water bottle. "Thanks, Coach."
Downstairs, Phil was already in full "Supportive Dad" mode. He paced the living room, wearing a custom T-shirt that read, Dunphy Dynasty: The Next Generation. Haley sat cross-legged on the couch, scrolling through her phone.
"Dad, do you have to wear that?" she asked, gesturing at the shirt.
"Of course!" Phil replied, beaming. "My son's about to make history. If I don't show my support, who will?"
"Literally everyone else," Haley muttered, though a small smile tugged at her lips.
Luke, meanwhile, was running laps around the house with a foam finger, occasionally shouting, "Go Adrian!" at random intervals.
"Luke, you're going to break something!" Claire snapped, narrowly catching a vase he almost knocked over.
Alex, sitting at the dining table with a book, didn't even look up. "Let him. It'll be a valuable lesson in Newtonian physics."
Adrian descended the stairs, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder. "Okay, I'm ready."
"Look at you!" Phil exclaimed, eyes glistening with pride. "My boy, the next Michael Jordan. Or, no—Kobe. Or maybe Steph. No, wait—"
"Phil," Claire interrupted, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Breathe."
Adrian chuckled, shaking his head. "You guys don't need to make this a big deal."
Haley raised an eyebrow. "Uh, you're playing against the Riverview Raptors. Even I've heard they're scary."
"They're just another team," Adrian replied, shrugging. "We've got this."
Arriving at the Gym
The gym was already buzzing with energy when the Dunphys arrived. Students, parents, and faculty filled the bleachers, their voices blending into a cacophony of cheers and chatter. Hillside's mascot, a hawk in a jersey, was performing awkward cartwheels near the sidelines, much to Luke's amusement.
"This place is packed," Claire whispered to Phil, clutching her purse nervously. "What if he—"
"Don't even say it," Phil interrupted, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. "Adrian's got this."
The family found their seats near the front row. Phil immediately started waving his foam finger, yelling, "That's my boy!" Claire shushed him, though not without a fond smile. Haley, pretending not to care, kept sneaking glances at the court. Alex, meanwhile, had her notebook open, jotting down something Adrian assumed was statistical analysis.
Luke bounced excitedly in his seat, shouting, "Go Adrian! Dunk on someone!"
To Adrian's surprise, Kendall and Kylie were there too, sitting a few rows behind his family. Kendall gave him a small wave, while Kylie hollered, "Don't embarrass yourself, Dunphy!"
Adrian couldn't help but grin.
From the opposite side of the gym, Mitch, Cam, and Jay arrived together. Jay, wearing his signature leather jacket, took in the scene with a critical eye. "I hope this team is worth the hype," he muttered, his tone skeptical but tinged with pride.
"Oh, please, Jay," Cam said, holding a tray of nachos. "Adrian's a natural! He's going to crush it."
Mitch adjusted his tie. "Cam's right. Adrian's been working his tail off for this. Let's just enjoy the game."
Jay smirked, taking a seat near the Dunphys. "Let's see if the kid's got what it takes."
Meeting the Team
Adrian joined his teammates in the locker room, where Coach Hendricks was giving his final pep talk. The players—Marcus, Jamal, Ethan, and Noah—sat on the benches, their faces a mix of focus and excitement.
"Listen up," Hendricks began, pacing in front of them. "This isn't just any game. Riverview plays dirty, and they'll try to get in your heads. Don't let them. Play smart, play together, and show them what Hawks basketball is all about."
Marcus, the captain, clapped Adrian on the shoulder. "You ready, Dunphy?"
"Always," Adrian replied, his voice steady.
"Good. Let's show them what we've got."
The Game
The opening tip-off set the tone. Noah easily won the tip, passing it to Marcus, who quickly directed the offense. Adrian felt the intensity immediately. Riverview's captain, Tyler Briggs, was on him like a shadow, muttering taunts under his breath.
"Is that all you've got, rookie?"
Adrian ignored him, focusing on the ball. Daphne's voice cut through the noise in his mind. "Stay calm. Read his movements. Anticipate."
Midway through the first quarter, Adrian began to find his rhythm. He mirrored a spin move he'd studied during practice, leaving Tyler stumbling as Adrian sank a jump shot. The crowd erupted.
Phil was on his feet, shouting, "That's my boy! MVP material right there!"
"Sit down, Phil," Claire said, though her smile betrayed her pride.
As the game progressed, Adrian's Perfect Copy skill came to life. He replicated a fadeaway jumper he had seen from Ethan during practice, earning him a clean three-pointer over Jake Simmons. Even Jamal, usually the loudest voice on the court, gave Adrian an approving nod. "Nice shot, rookie."
By halftime, the Hawks were clinging to a slim lead. In the locker room, Coach Hendricks paced like a drill sergeant.
"You're doing good, but good won't win this game," he said, his voice sharp. "Adrian, you've got the instincts. Lead this team."
Adrian nodded. "Got it, Coach."
Second Half: Taking Over
The Raptors came out swinging in the third quarter, their aggressive defense putting the Hawks on the back foot. But Adrian stepped up, taking control of the tempo. He executed a flawless crossover, breaking through the press and finding Ethan for a three-pointer. The crowd erupted once again.
Jay leaned forward in his seat, a rare smile on his face. "That's what I like to see."
Cam was practically bouncing in his chair. "Did you see that, Mitchell? Our nephew is incredible!"
"Yes, Cam, we all saw it," Mitch replied, though his own excitement was evident. "That crossover was something else."
In the final minutes, with the Hawks clinging to a slim lead, Adrian faced off against Carlos Ruiz, Riverview's towering center. Carlos blocked his path, but Adrian didn't hesitate. A quick euro-step left Carlos flat-footed, and Adrian scored a layup that sealed the game.
The buzzer sounded. Final score: 62-58, Hawks.
Family Reactions
The Dunphys were on their feet, cheering wildly. Phil was practically doing a victory dance, while Claire hugged Alex, her face beaming with pride.
Haley gave Adrian a rare thumbs-up. "Not bad, little bro. Not bad."
Luke, as expected, was screaming, "Adrian's a beast!"
Mitch and Cam joined the celebration, with Cam lifting his arms dramatically. "This is the start of something big!"
Even Jay, who rarely showed open affection, clapped Adrian on the back as they walked out of the gym. "Good work, kid. You might just have what it takes."
Adrian glanced at the stands, where his family and friends were still buzzing with excitement. For the first time, he truly felt the depth of their support. The journey was just beginning, but tonight, he let himself savor the moment.
