Chapter 29: Chapter 28
Unraveling the Mystery
Anita arrived at the secluded park an hour before the scheduled meeting, her informant's tip about Ethan's meeting with a private investigator prompting her to take action. Concealing herself behind a dense cluster of trees, she watched as Ethan and John Carlos, the investigator, met at the park bench.
Their conversation was tense, with John revealing that James had traveled to San Diego three days before his accident. "I've checked all flight records, and there's no evidence he returned by air before the accident," John said, his voice low.
Ethan's expression was a mix of anticipation and dread. "Are you suggesting he never made it back?" he asked.
John nodded. "I suspect something happened to him in San Diego. It's possible he was killed there, and his body was transported back and the accident staged."
Ethan's face paled as he processed the information. "But why San Diego? What was he doing there?"
John shook his head. "That's what we need to find out. We need to retrace his steps in San Diego, find out who he met, where he went. It's the only way to uncover the truth."
As Anita listened to their conversation, her mind was racing with possibilities. She remained hidden, ensuring her presence remained undetected as Ethan and John concluded their meeting and departed, each determined to uncover the truth about James's death.
That evening, Anita arrived at Ethan's apartment, her anxious thoughts carefully concealed behind a mask of concern. "Ethan, I've been worried about you," she said softly. "This investigation must be taking a toll. Have you uncovered anything new about James's death?"
Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly as he searched for authenticity in Anita's expression. "Not really," he replied guardedly. "Just chasing a few leads, trying to make sense of things."
Anita nodded sympathetically, her expression a perfect blend of understanding and empathy. "I want you to know I'm here for you, Ethan. If there's anything I can do to support you, don't hesitate to ask."
As she left Ethan's apartment, Anita's thoughts shifted into high gear. She needed to stay one step ahead of Ethan and John, anticipating their every move and countering their efforts with precision.
