Chapter 9: The Key to Everything
Mia couldn't sleep. The key felt heavy in her hand as she turned it over and over, watching it catch the moonlight coming through her bedroom window. Box 1013. A safety deposit box holding who knows what secrets.
Her phone sat on the nightstand, that strange text message still open on the screen. "Some locks should stay closed. Some secrets should stay hidden. Choose wisely."
Was it a warning? A threat? Or bait to pull her deeper into this mess?
Mia groaned and flopped back against her pillows. Just when she thought everything was wrapping up, another secret dropped into her lap. Literally.
"I'm done playing games," she muttered to herself, but even as she said it, her fingers closed tightly around the key. She knew she wasn't done. Not even close.
Morning came too quickly. Mia dragged herself out of bed, made extra-strong coffee, and pulled out her laptop. Time to do what she did best: dig.
"Okay, Derek Mercer," she said to her empty flat. "Let's find out who you really are."
Three hours later, Mia had a corkboard covered with printouts and sticky notes. Derek's history looked perfect on the surface – prestigious school, successful job, no criminal record. But there were holes. Strange holes.
"Two years missing after college," Mia mumbled, circling dates on a timeline. "Company started with mystery investors. And that trip to Hong Kong that overlapped with Chen Industries' growth..."
Her phone rang, startling her. Olivia.
"Hey," Mia answered carefully.
"I need to see you," Olivia said without welcome. "Lunch at Bayside Grill?"
Mia paused, thinking about her investigation wall. "I'm kind of in the middle of something—"
"It's about the key," Olivia interrupted.
Mia's blood ran cold. "What key?"
"Please, Mia. One hour."
The line went dead.
Mia's stomach curled into knots. How did Olivia know about the key? Had she been watching when Mia picked it up? Or was someone else watching them all?
Bayside Grill was crowded, but Olivia had gotten a private table on the patio. She looked tired but determined in a simple black dress, her hair pulled back tightly.
"You've been busy," Olivia said as Mia sat down.
"How do you know about the key?" Mia ordered, keeping her voice low.
Olivia smiled slightly and said she didn't know about a possible problem but believed Mia would find it if there was one. Mia confronted Olivia about whether she had set her up, to which Olivia answered that she needed to know if Mia was fully committed. Olivia revealed that Derek and Ethan were not who they looked to be, adding that they were working together. Mia was shocked, saying that they hated each other. Olivia explained she had tracked Derek's financials and found regular transfers to an offshore account controlled by Ethan.
Mia expressed doubt about why Olivia would believe her, but Olivia insisted that Mia had always wanted the truth. When the waiter brought their food, Mia considered the implications of Derek and Ethan's partnership. She asked about Lily's safety, and Olivia confirmed she was alive but not as safe as Ethan stated. Mia stated she had found a two-year gap in Derek's past and suggested that he and Ethan were after something in box 1013, showing Olivia the key she had discovered.
Olivia urged Mia to move fast as Ethan was trying to pull Mia further into his plans. They chose to investigate the safety deposit box at First National Bank. Mia used a lie about her grandmother to gain entry to the box, where they found a USB drive and a letter. Mia refused to examine the USB drive at the bank, choosing to take it home instead. On their way, Mia suspected they were being followed.
Once at her apartment, Mia set up to examine the USB drive, which contained financial records showing that Chen Industries used Phoenix Holdings for his illicit activities. Realizing Olivia's mother's name appeared in the papers, Mia offered comfort as Olivia processed the betrayal. They read a letter from Mason Chen, Olivia's uncle, indicating that the Phoenix Ridge site held buried bodies, including possibly Lily's. They decided to investigate that night before an important vote on the project.
They prepared to leave and got a text from Derek asking to meet about the key. Olivia suggested they meet him at Phoenix Ridge, and they both chose to drive separately to avoid being followed. Upon arrival, they found Derek and confronted him about Lily's possible burial spot. Before they could act further, Ethan showed up, claiming to know the truth about Lily.
As they started to dig, they uncovered three containers, one clearly marked with Lily's name. Derek hoped it wasn't her and eventually realized it wasn't after seeing the body inside. Olivia suggested it was a fake made to look like Lily. Tensions rose as Ethan claimed she was dead until Olivia secretly signaled for FBI backup. Agents arrived to apprehend Ethan, showing that Olivia had been involved with them for months.
The FBI then led them to a third container filled with papers and hard drives. The group was left with more questions about what they had found and the whereabouts of Lily.
"Mason's insurance policy," Olivia said softly. "Everything needed to bring down my father and his entire operation."
"And the second body?" Mia asked.
"Chen's former security chief," the agent stated. "Disappeared in 2014 after threatening to go public about chemical dumping."
As the FBI continued their work, Mia walked away from the chaos, wanting a moment alone. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A text from an unknown number:
"You chose to open the lock. Now you live with the results. This isn't over. Not even close. —L"
L for Lily? Mia's heart raced as she stared at the message. If Lily was living, where was she? And what did she mean by consequences?
She looked back at Olivia and Derek, now giving statements to different agents. Partners or enemies? Victims or conspirators? After everything that had happened, Mia still wasn't sure who to trust.
One thing was certain: someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to control them all. And whoever sent that text was still out there, watching and waiting.
Mia slipped her phone back into her pocket without showing anyone the message. Some secrets, she decided, were best kept close for now. Until she knew who was really playing who in this dangerous game.
The key had opened one lock, but there were clearly many more doors yet to be unlocked.
And somewhere beyond those doors, the real truth was still waiting to be found.
