Chapter 18 Candy and Friends

In the hundred years that followed Simon giving Marceline the magic pendent things were quite in the land of ice. But elsewhere two powerful civilizations were beginning to rise.

The first civilization to spring was the sugary creatures, later called the Candy People. They had slowly grown into humanoid candy creatures. The Candy People slowly became intelligent and more human-like over the years. One day they stumbled upon an old book store and found a book talking about being ruled by royalty. The Candy People became fascinated by this idea and they chose the most intelligent of their kind to lead them and serve as the Royal Family. The leaders they chose were made from bubblegum and they were the most intelligent and humanoid among the candy creatures. And thus the Candy Kingdom was born. But unbeknownst to any of the Candy People, the Lich's servant Crimson was among them and had worked his way into being one of the most trusted servants of the leaders.

The second civilization to rise up were creatures made of living flames. At one point a comet had fallen from the sky and struck an active volcano. The elements of the comet and the volcano mixed and gave birth to people made out of living flames. The new creatures were called Flame People and they were confused about their existence and purpose. Whenever a Flame Person ventured out from their volcano home they would end up accidentally setting things on fire. This frightened and confused the Flame People, so much they just mainly stayed in their own territory and kept to themselves. They would have probably stayed isolated and never go more then a few hundred yards from their home, but a twist of fate changed all that.

A few hundred yards from the north of the volcano laid the Lich still frozen in the mystical ice, by Simon. The evil being's body was disabled, but he was still able to communicate with Crimson using, his mind. Crimson kept the Lich updated about the Candy People. Crimson had asked the Lich, if he wanted himself or Alister to come free him from the ice. The Lich declined saying that he would break out of the ice himself and that his minions should continue with their own work.

Then one fateful day a Flame Man stumbled upon the frozen Lich. He crept towards the frozen creature with curiosity. The Lich used his powers to invade the mind of the Flame Man and took control of him. The Flame Man walked towards the Lich and melted the ice with his flames. The Lich flexed his limbs and looked deep into the Flame Man, he had controlled and began to plant ideas into, his head.

"You and your people are destructive. You destroy everything you touch and therefore, you are evil. You will create your own kingdom and you will rule, by being evil and committing acts of cruelty and destruction." Said the Lich as he used his powers to create a red crown and handed it to the Flame Man.

The Lich then flew off towards his tower.

The Flame Man blinked his eyes in confusion and stared at the crown in his hands, he put it on and headed towards the volcano. Another Flame Man greeted him.

"Hey your back. Are you ok? You've been gone for awhile." Said the second Flame Man.

"I've just been told our reason for existence. We are destructive and evil. Those are our purposes and from this day forward I will be called Flame King and my descendants and I will rule this land." Said the newly self proclaimed Flame King.

And so the Fire Kingdom was officially born.

A hundred years after both kingdoms were forged Marceline and Simon had an encounter with the leader of the Candy Kingdom.

The current ruler of the Candy Kingdom was named Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum. She was known as Princess Bubblegum by her people and Bonnie by her closes friends. Bubblegum was young looking and she appeared to be nineteen, but in actuality she was a hundred and seventy six years old.

Bubblegum had light pink skin and dark pink hair, she was dressed in a brown dress, black boots, and had a gold amulet with a blue gemstone around her neck. Her hair was in two ponytails each tied with a brown strip of fabric and a gold tiara with a green gem stone in it.

The princess was out with a scouting party that consisted of her personal servant Peppermint Butler and a few other Candy People. Bubblegum was looking to see what kind of people lived near, her people and what kind of resources they had. Bubblegum and her people were in the process of building themselves their own castle and city. They had found some materials and had even gotten some old construction machines working for them. It was a slow process, but it would pay off.

The Candy People needed a place to live and be safe, already they had been attacked repeatedly by a group of criminals that called themselves the Bath Boys. Bubblegum sighed and looked at the ice mountain ahead. Hopefully they could find someone friendly and helpful.

The group passed a small group of penguins and one of the bird eyes glowed red for a few seconds, Peppermint Butler was the only one who saw it and smirked, before continuing to walk with the others.

At the mountain home Marceline and Simon were hanging outside the mountain. Simon was reading a book, while Marceline sat with her guitar in her lap and a postcard. The postcard was from her father. For the past few years Marceline had received a postcard from her father asking her how she was. The postcard would just appear before her in a puff of smoke, after Marceline read it, she would write some words and it would disappear. Marceline wrote that she was doing fine and the postcard disappeared.

Marceline glanced over at Simon. It was hard for Marceline to believe that both she and Simon were both over three hundred and fifty years old. Marceline understood that because she was a vampire that she could live for a really long time. Simon on the other hand was something else entirely. Marceline had no idea how long Simon could live for, but for the time being she enjoyed his company and was glad that he was still alive.

It was then that Simon and Marceline heard the sound of approaching footsteps, they looked up from what they were doing and saw Bubblegum and her group. Bubblegum stepped forward and addressed them.

"Greetings my name is Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum. I am the ruler of the Candy People." Greeted Bubblegum with a polite bow.

Simon stood up as Marceline hovered in the air.

"Well it's nice to meet you Princess. I'm Simon." Said Simon.

"I'm Marceline the Vampire Queen." Said Marceline with a playful smile as she flashed her fangs.

"You're a vampire? But it's daytime." Said Bubblegum as she looked at Marceline.

"Well your a smart one. Yeah I'm a vampire, but I wearing this magic pendant that allows me to walk in the sun, don't worry I won't suck any of your blood." Said Marceline as she pointed to the pendant around her neck.

"I see. Interesting. May I ask who rules this land?" Said Bubblegum.

"I suppose that would be me." Said Simon.

"So you're the king here?" Asked Bubblegum as she indicated the crown hanging from Simon's belt.

"Well...kind of. The crown here is a magical item that gives me the power of ice." Said Simon as he put the crown on and made it snow.

The Candy People awed with amazement. Bubblegum looked impressed.

"Impressive." Said Bubblegum.

"So what's a princess doing all the way out here? You looking for an ice to sculpt a statue, cause we got plenty of that." Joked Marceline.

"No we're just on a diplomatic mission making friends and allies with the locals of the other lands." Said Bubblegum.

"That's a nice cause." Said Simon.

"Thank you. Do you care to see the kingdom were building?" Said Bubblegum.

"I'd love to." Said Simon.

"Sounds cool. I'm in." Said Marceline.

"Wonderful." Said Bubblegum.

Simon and Marceline packed their things and headed off with the group. Several hours later they arrived at the construction sight.

"I must say Princess you and your people certainly know what your doing. What you have built so far is quite impressive and I can only imagine what it would look like, when it's complete." Said Simon.

"I can tell this will be a cool place." Said Marceline.

"Thanks." Said Bubblegum.

Simon and Marceline looked at all the Candy People working.

"You want us to help?" Asked Simon.

"You can if you want, we would really appreciate it." Said Bubblegum.

"No problem." Said Marceline as she walked over and easily picked up a stack of bricks with her super strength.

Simon went to help some Candy People look at some blueprints. Bubblegum smiled and went to join in on the construction.

After a few hours of work everybody called it a day. Marceline out her guitar and began strumming it and sining. Several of the Candy People went to watch and began signing along with Marceline. Simon saw some little Candy Kids and used, his powers to create a little mound of snow for them to play in. The kids giggled and laughed as they played in the snow.

After Marceline's little concert Bubblegum thanked Marceline and Simon.

"Thank you two so much, your really helped us out and you really brighten everybody's life." Said Bubblegum.

"No problem. I enjoyed having an audience that wasn't made out of penguins and snowmen." Said Marceline.

"Life just been tough for me and my people. We are constantly being assaulted by a gang of criminals called the Bath Boys." Said Bubblegum.

"Why are they called Bath Boys?" Asked Simon.

"They wear nothing but towels and other bath stuff." Explained Bubblegum.

"Gross! You want us to take care of them?" Asked Marceline.

"No don't worry about it I'm working on something to take care of them. Let me show you to your beds." Said Bubblegum as she lead them to some cots.

Everybody said goodnight and fell asleep.

The next day started out normal enough, but then one of the Candy People found a one armed girl and a white tiger laying on the ground unconscious. Bubblegum had them brought in and put into a tent. When the two new guest regained consciousness Bubblegum, Simon, and Marceline went to greet them.

The girl was missing her right arm, she had long, knee-length black hair, lime green skin and bright yellow eyes. She was dressed in a gray dress, with flats and a teal scarf.

"Hello there my name is Princess Bubblegum. These are my friends Simon and Marceline. What is your name?" Said Bubblegum.

"My name is Shoko." Said the girl.

"Who knocked you out?" Asked Simon.

"The Bath Boys did and they stole everything I had." Said Shoko.

"Those darn Bath Boys!" Hissed Bubblegum as she clenched her fist.

"It's ok my parents told me that earthly things don't matter." Said Shoko.

"Those are some wise words." Said Bubblegum.

"They told me that all you need in this life was a good computer." Said Shoko.

"Yes...wait what?" Said Bubblegum looking confused.

"So my parents cut off my arm and traded it for a computer and then they dropped me off at the doorstep of a dojo." Said Shoko.

"That's seriously messed up." Said Marceline.

"That's wrong! Parents are supposed to protect their children!" Declared Bubblegum.

"They are?" Asked Shoko.

"Yes they are. Here come let me show you something." Said Bubblegum as she lead everybody outside.

They looked at the Candy People working on the buildings.

"All the Candy People are like family to me. I'm their leader and its my duty to protect them from threats like the Bath Boys and give them a home. I will do everything in my power to protect them and all those in need." Said Bubblegum.

"You really think you can beat them?" Asked Shoko.

"Don't worry I have an awesome plan to handle them." Said Bubblegum with a smile as she turned to face Shoko. "So you want to help out or do you need to rest some more?"

"I'll help out." Said Shoko.

So they began working by filling a moat that had toxic chemicals in it with candy and sugar and candy. Shoko despite having one arm, she was revealed to be quit strong and a capable working. The day went by uneventful, until a Bath Boy showed up and Shoko and her tiger knocked him down a hill and he ran off. Everybody congratulated Shoko.

"That's some mad skills you have there." Said Marceline.

"Thanks." Said Shoko.

Later that day Simon pulled out a camera and decided to take some pictures. Marecline grabbed Bubblegum and Shoko and the three of them stood together for a picture.

"Say cheeses." Said Simon as he took the picture. "Three pictures for each of the lovely ladies." He said as he handed them each a picture.

"Thank you Simon. This is a really nice picture." Said Bubblegum.

Marceline smiled at her picture. Shoko stared at her picture she felt regret and sadness.

The group continued with the construction and Bubblegum involved Simon, Marceline, and Shoko in her secret project plan in her lab. Bubblegum was adding the finishing touches to her project. Before her laid two large pink robots that resemble gumball machines, they had spherical glass heads with colorful gumballs inside them and wore an ice cream cone hats.

"Time to activate these guys." Said Bubblegum as she took off her amulet and placed it it over both robots chest.

There was a flash of light and the two massive robots eyes began to grow and they stood up. Marceline, Simon, and Shoko stared at the massive robots with amazement. Bubblegum put her amulet back on.

"What is your command mother?" Asked the robots.

"You are the Gumball Guardians and your first official duty is to protect the kingdom and it's people." Said Bubblegum.

"Yes mother." Said the Gumball Guardians as they walked out of the lab.

Peppermint Butler walked into the lab carrying a box and handed it to Bubblegum. Then the little candy man walked away.

"Shoko I have a little present for you." Said Bubblegum.

"What for?" Asked Shoko looking confused.

"Your my friend silly. You've been really helpful and I want to thank you." Said Bubblegum as she opened the box.

Inside was a mechanical arm with a claw. Shoko stared at the arm as several emotions flashed through her mind. Surprise. Happiness. Guilt. Regret. Fear. Sadness. Shoko picked up the arm and placed it on her nub. Bubblegum helped her strap it on.

"There now. How dose it feel?" Said Bubblegum.

Shoko moved her arm around and opened and closed the claw a few times.

"It...feels good. Thank...you...um I just need a little alone time." Said Shoko as she ran out of the lab a few tears falling from her eyes.

"What was that about?" Asked Bubblegum.

"This is probably the first time anyone has ever given her anything and shown her a big act of kindness. From what I can tell Shoko has had no real friends or loved ones in her life. She just a little overwhelmed and needs a little time to herself to think things through." Said Simon.

"I've been there. Trust me Bonnie. Just give her some space and she'll be fine." Said Marceline.

"I guess your right." Said Bubblegum.

The three of them walked out of the lab.

In her tent Shoko was crying as she stared at the photo of herself with Bubblegum and Marceline. Oh how Shoko hated herself! She was a traitor and a coward. She was going to have to commit a act that would ruin the friendship and life she had here. But she had to do otherwise her life would be over.

A few weeks ago before she joined Bubblegum's group, Shoko had accepted a job from the leader of the Bath Boys to steal Bubblegum's amulet. The leader told Shoko if she failed, the Bath Boys would come after her and kill her.

Shoko took a deep breath and stopped crying, she had to steal the amulet. She looked outside her tent and saw that it was nighttime.

"Better get this over with." Said Shoko as she moved towards the partially constructed building Bubblegum slept in.

On her way there Shoko encountered Marceline playing her guitar under a tree.

"Hey Shoko, you ok?" Asked Marceline.

"Yeah I'm fine." Said Shoko.

"Something's up with you. You can tell me anything you know I'm your friend and if there's anything you need or want to talk about. Just ask." Said Marceline.

Shoko considered telling Marceline everything, but stopped, she didn't want to get in trouble or involve Marceline in this mess. This was something she had to do on her own.

"I'm ok, but...maybe will talk later. I have something I need to do." Said Shoko as she began to walk off.

"Goodnight." Said Marceline as she continued to strum her guitar.

Shoko made her way into the building and made it to where Bubblegum was sleeping. The two Gumball Guardians were off in the distance patrolling the area. Shoko got close to the sleeping Bubblegum and took the amulet off. Bubblegum just barely moved. Shoko was fixing to leave, when a voice shouted at her.

"Intruder!"

Shoko turned and saw one of the Gumball Guardians stomping towards the building. Bubblegum woke up confused and looked at Shoko holding the amulet. Fear took ahold of Shoko as she started running towards the nearest exit. The Gumball Guardian fired a laser blast from it's eyes and hit the ground next to Shoko making it explode. Shoko screamed as the explosion threw her off of the building and down towards the moat of toxic chemicals. She fell in with a splash and vanished. Bubblegum ran over to the building edge and looked down. A panicked look appeared on her face.

"Quick save her!" She cried.

The Gumball Guardian stuck his hand into the moat, but quickly pulled it out. The hand was completed melted away. A look of sadness came across Bubblegum's face.

"What's going here?" Said Marceline as she and Simon appeared on the building.

"There was an...accident. Shoko took my amulet and one of the Gumball Guardians saw her and...blasted at her. Shoko fell into the...moat and I ordered the Guardian to save her, but...he wasn't able to. Shoko...is dead!" Said Bubblegum as tears fell from her eyes.

"Your invention killed Shoko!" Snarled Marceline as a few tears fell from her eyes.

"I...didn't mean for this to happen!" Cried Bubblegum.

"You killed her!" Screamed Marceline as she stretched her arms out towards Bubblegum, but Simon put his hand on, her shoulder and stopped her.

"Marceline enough. Shoko was Bubblegum's friend to. What happened here was an accident. Bubblegum was not responsible for this." Said Simon.

"But it was her invention that killed her." Sniffed Marceline.

"It...wasn't meant to do that. The...Guardian got...protective and it accidentally sent Shoko falling into the moat. Marceline I'm sorry." Said Bubblegum with a sad look on her face.

"I don't...want to talk to you right now." Said Marceline as she flew away.

"Don't...worry I'll go talk to her." Said Simon as he flew away.

Bubblegum glanced at the place where Shoko fell and went back to bed.

A few minutes later a large slug-like creature with long, green hair, and two arms flopped out of the moat carrying Bubblegum's amulet in one hand. It was Shoko and she had been mutated by the toxic chemicals in the moat. The mutated Shoko dragged itself away from the moat and the buildings and made its way to a field a few miles away and collapsed on a hill in front of a sapling. Shoko's breath became rattled as she stared at her newly grown right arm.

"I finally...have two normal arms...and I'm dying. This...sucks! Bubblegum. Marceline. I'm sorry...I should...have told...you everything. You...were...my friends, but...I turned out...to be a nasty friend...and now...I'm nasty looking. This...is...the...end." Said Shoko as her body breathed one final breath before dying.

In the Underworld, Death looked up and saw a green spirit flying around and chattering like crazy.

"The next person that spirit reincarnate into, will have the memory of it's past life's guilt, but won't really remember anything else from that past life. That should be interesting." Said Death as he returned back to work.

The spirit of Shoko flew around repeatedly saying it was sorry.

On the hill the sapling slowly grew around Shoko's body hiding it completely and making it look like she was never there.
