American Tax Officer

Chapter 245: Arrival of the Mayor of the City of Los Angeles

"Oh my god, they really are from the Camora Family!"

"It's said that the reason why criminals in Los Angeles are so restless is all because of the Camora Family's instigation. Director David is definitely going to target them this time!"

"This family outwardly appears to be one of the elite in Los Angeles, but it's rumored that they're involved in a lot of illegal activities behind the scenes. It seems the rumors might be true."

"..."

Over the years, the Camora Family had made donations, endowed buildings, and attended various events held by the mayor and councilors in Los Angeles. Their image as an upper-class family had already been deeply ingrained in people's hearts.

And now that the Western Suburb Branch was really going after this family, it immediately sparked heated discussions among the citizens of Los Angeles who were watching.

At the airplane door, facing a barrage of media reporters, the members of the Camora Family all had sullen expressions.

Because they knew that, after today, their family's image in the Los Angeles high society might well collapse.

Meanwhile, Nisen and the others from the Western Suburbs didn't care what they were thinking. They walked up with handcuffs in hand, alongside the inspectors, ready to make arrests.

However, this also drew Bowersen's displeasure. He said to David, who was not far away, "Director David, our family was just heading back home for a vacation. You dispatching fighter jets to intercept us is one thing, but now you're arresting us too? What is the meaning of this?"

"Mr. Bowersen, we currently suspect that you and your Camora Family are involved in tax evasion. So I'm sorry, you are temporarily restricted from leaving the country, and furthermore, you need to come back with us."

"Director David, our family runs legitimate businesses, and every tax matter is handled by a specialized team. There can't be any suspicion of tax evasion."

"Whether there's suspicion or not, you'll know once you come back with us."

After saying those words, David gave Nisen a knowing look, and Nisen, understanding immediately, led the inspectors and charged into the cabin.

Seeing this, Bowersen and many in the Camora Family felt their hearts lurch.

Because they recalled that, in their rush, they had brought a lot of funds onto the plane that they hadn't had the chance to launder. What was even more fatal was that some worthless fellows in the family might have carried some contraband. If these items were discovered on the spot, they wouldn't be able to talk their way out of it even with eight mouths.

Thinking this, Bowersen hurriedly shouted, "Stop, what are you doing?"

Nisen and others paid no heed to his scolding and continued to lead their team towards the aircraft stairway. Bowersen and others tried to rush over to stop them, but in the end, they were no match for the inspectors from the Western Suburb Branch and were pushed aside.

Not long after, Nisen emerged from the cabin. He first gave the Camora Family, with their ashen faces, a gleeful gaze before reporting to David, "Director, we found some things."

"What are they?"

"Bring them out."

With Nisen's cue, inspectors from inside brought out box after box, opening them to reveal stacks of US dollars.

In other boxes, there were also packs of loose powder, Ecstasy pills, methamphetamine, and other contraband.

David even casually rummaged through them before looking up to ask Rickel, "Mr. Rickel, with all this cash here, do you have any records of their sources?"

He could obviously see that this batch of cash was definitely not cleaned yet, otherwise the Camora Family's complexions wouldn't have looked so ugly.

Of course, even if this batch wasn't dirty money, with the people and material evidence he had gathered over the past two days, it was enough to convict the Camora Family.

Facing David's question, Rickel and others still had ghastly pale faces, not uttering a single word.

And David was not inclined to waste words either, simply waving his hand and commanding, "Take them away!"

...

Back at the Western Suburb Branch, David first called Keanu Lewis over, instructing them to accelerate the weaving of the evidence chain against the Camora Family.

He also sent someone to the city bureau to discuss setting a date for the trial.

Half an hour later, Ariel walked in and said, "Director, Mayor Grice is here, he says he wants to talk to you."

"Mayor Grice?"

David was momentarily taken aback. The name was not unfamiliar to him; it was the mayor of Los Angeles. He was coming to see him... was it because of the Camora Family matter?

Possible!

The Camora Family had deep roots in Los Angeles, with numerous high-ranking officials involved with them. Like Mayor Grice who was now visiting, they possibly feared getting implicated because of the family's dealings, which was understandable.

After all, as the mayor of Los Angeles, America's second-largest city, his face was worth some consideration.

With this thought, David said, "Then bring him over."

A few minutes later, the office door was knocked on, and soon after, a man in his fifties with slightly grey hair entered. Upon seeing David, he smiled and extended his right hand, saying, "Director David, I know you're very busy; I hope I haven't disturbed you?"

"Where would we be without Mayor Grice personally visiting? No matter how busy, I'd have to make time," David responded.

Grice smiled and replied, "I've wanted to meet you for a while, Director David, but I've been tied up with official business. I kept delaying, but I want to say, on behalf of over four million citizens of Los Angeles, I need to thank you."
