Chapter 19: 19 Miyamizu Mitsuha
Hojou Kyousuke was absolutely certain he didn't know this girl. And why was that?
Because hovering above her head was a bright, glowing label:
[Your Name · Miyamizu Mitsuha (Protagonist)].
There was no way he could forget meeting someone this important!
Yet, when she called his name, her expression filled with anticipation, all he could do was stare blankly.
"It's me," she said hesitantly.
'I know your name is Miyamizu Mitsuha, but I really don't know you,' Kyousuke thought.
Just as he was about to respond, her face suddenly fell.
"You… don't remember me?"
"Your name is…?"
The moment Kyousuke said those words, Mitsuha's expression completely changed.
She hadn't expected him to say something like that—like he was speaking to a total stranger.
'This isn't right…' she thought, her heart sinking.
'I was so sure. If we met, he'd recognize me right away. Because the person who switched bodies with me… was you.'
Her pale cheeks flushed red as she turned her head away, avoiding his gaze.
"I'm… sorry."
Her voice was barely above a whisper, strained with disappointment.
But no matter how much she tried to rationalize it, it didn't make sense.
'This is Kyousuke. I know it is. So why…?'
Before either of them could say anything else, the subway announcement rang through the train.
Mitsuha flinched.
As if trying to escape, she squeezed through the crowd toward the doors.
"Your name is—?"
Hearing Kyousuke's voice, Mitsuha instinctively turned around, wanting to answer him.
But the rush of people forced her forward, pushing her toward the exit.
"It's Mitsuha! My name is Mitsuha!"
She called out while hastily untying the braided cord from her hair, reaching out to hand it to him.
She didn't even understand why she was doing this.
It was just an impulse, a sudden certainty in her heart.
Her grandmother's words echoed in her mind:
"Threads are connections. They tie people together. They twist, tangle, unravel, and reconnect. This is time itself."
And in this fleeting moment, she wanted to tie herself to him—however irrational it seemed.
But before the braided cord could leave her fingers, before she could be swept away by the crowd—
A hand caught hers.
A strong force pulled her back inside the train.
"Hey, Mitsuha, right? Why are you running off before we even finish talking?"
The voice was familiar. And yet… it wasn't.
Because countless times before, she had spoken with his voice.
But this was the first time she was hearing it with her own ears.
A smile tugged at her lips.
Yet she still couldn't help but grumble, "You're squeezing my hand too hard!"
"Ah—sorry, sorry!"
Kyousuke immediately let go, suddenly aware of his own strength.
"Jeez! No wonder they call you the delinquent boss! You're so rough!"
Mitsuha rubbed her wrist, pretending to be annoyed.
"Wait, what? I'm not some delinquent!"
"You totally are! I mean, you—"
Mitsuha abruptly stopped mid-sentence, realizing that the entire train car had fallen silent. People were staring at them.
"...Let's talk somewhere else," she muttered.
"Yeah, good idea," Kyousuke agreed.
The train arrived at Sendagi Station, his usual stop.
Conveniently, it was on the Chiyoda Line, connecting his all-boys school, Higashi Middle School, directly to this area—no transfers needed.
The best part? Just a few minutes' walk from the station was Yanaka Ginza, a nostalgic shopping street filled with cozy cafés and traditional family-owned diners.
Cheap, delicious food.
That's exactly why Kyousuke had picked this place to live.
The rent was dirt cheap—only 110,000 yen for his tiny apartment, which he could easily afford with his scholarship money.
Plus, Natsume Soseki had once lived here! Kyousuke had even gone to check out the house where I Am a Cat was written.
But most importantly…
His go-to family restaurant was right at the entrance of Yanaka Ginza.
The first time he ate there, he decided—this was the place. For the next three years, he'd be eating dinner here every night.
Mitsuha had been walking in silence ever since they left the train.
"Watch your step," Kyousuke reminded her as they descended the long staircase leading into the shopping district.
At the bottom, Yanaka Ginza's nostalgic storefronts came into view, and Kyousuke turned toward his favorite restaurant.
"How about a family restaurant? That okay?"
"Huh? Ah—um, I'm not really hungry… Maybe we can just sit somewhere?"
Kyousuke glanced at her legs.
"You should eat something. And besides—your feet are killing you, aren't they?"
Mitsuha flinched.
'He'd noticed it.'
Every step she took, she winced ever so slightly.
"It's fine! I'll be okay! And I, um… kinda spent all my money already…"
Kyousuke didn't reply immediately. Instead, he casually asked,
"Want me to carry you, then?"
Mitsuha's face exploded into a deep red.
"Wha—? No way! Absolutely not!"
Amused, Kyousuke gestured toward the entrance of the restaurant.
"Then let's go. You already walked past it."
With no room to argue, Mitsuha huffed and followed him inside.
The restaurant was lively but not packed.
There was only one open table left—by the window.
Kyousuke quickly led Mitsuha over and handed her the menu.
"What do you want to eat?"
Mitsuha hesitated, subtly peeking into her nearly empty wallet.
She really had spent everything.
The train tickets, all the transfers, searching for Kyousuke all day… She barely had enough left to get home.
Kyousuke noticed.
"Order whatever you want. My treat."
Mitsuha's face turned red again.
'This is all because of him!' she thought bitterly.
If she hadn't spent the whole day searching for him, she wouldn't be broke right now!
Fine. If he was offering, she'd make him regret it.
"Hmph! Of course, I know Kyousuke-sama is loaded," she said smugly.
"Then I'll have a beef set meal, a grilled salmon plate, a matcha ice cream, a molten chocolate cake, and an iced coffee!"
Kyousuke didn't even blink.
"That's it? You sure?"
Mitsuha's eye twitched.
'Is he calling me a glutton?!'
She pouted, folding her arms.
Across the table, Kyousuke casually added,
"I'll have the special beef set and a large Coke."
The restaurant owner's wife, who was also working as the waitress, jotted it down.
"Coming right up!"
As she walked away, Mitsuha leaned forward, suddenly curious.
"Hey, what's so 'special' about that beef set?"
Kyousuke smirked. "Nothing fancy. Just a super large portion of your beef set."
Mitsuha puffed her cheeks in frustration.
Kyousuke grinned.
For some reason…
Spending time with this strange, familiar girl was oddly fun.
