Chapter 23: 23 Kisaki Tetta’s Path to Becoming Underling

What on earth are kids today thinking?

Why do so many of them, even those with good grades, want to be troublemakers?

Hojou Kyousuke couldn't understand it.

He'd never been involved in the school club culture, so he really couldn't wrap his head around these people's train of thought.

"Even someone like Hanagaki Takemichi has dreams of ruling Higashi."

"Don't you feel even a little tempted, Hojou-kun?"

Kisaki Tetta's eyes sparkled with excitement as he continued.

"With your strength and my brains, we could easily dominate Higashi."

"All we need to do is defeat the two kendo clubs in Shinjuku, then take down Kanto Manji, the judo club in Shibuya, and we'll control the entire center of Tokyo."

"From there, we can move on to Setagaya and Meguro districts."

"Before long, we'll take over all of Tokyo and become the strongest Takemichi gang. Sounds awesome, right?"

Kisaki Tetta's passion was almost contagious, but Hojou Kyousuke didn't seem to care.

"Yawn."

Hojou Kyousuke let out a yawn. It wasn't surprising—this was just another case of neon-colored teenage delusions.

This felt like a child's game to him.

"Not interested at all. I'm a little tired. Let's talk some other time."

And with that, he slumped over onto his desk, closing his eyes to sleep.

He'd stayed up late last night catching up on some practice, and now he planned to rest during the next class.

Kisaki Tetta stared in disbelief.

He hadn't expected his big, tempting pitch to end up putting Hojou Kyousuke to sleep.

Was it his fault? No, how could a middle schooler resist the idea of ruling Tokyo?

It had to be something wrong with this guy. Looks like he'd need to rethink his approach.

Watching Hojou Kyousuke quickly fall asleep on his desk, Kisaki Tetta thought hard about his next move.

The afternoon passed by quickly, with Hojou Kyousuke either sleeping through science classes or zoning out during the humanities ones.

Soon, school let out, and with it came the start of the club recruitment period, making the entire school buzz with activity.

Hojou Kyousuke stuck his hands in his pockets, scanning the area in search of the kendo club's recruitment booth.

Kisaki Tetta followed closely behind, saying he would accompany him no matter which club he joined.

"Kisaki, do you know where the kendo club's recruitment booth is?" Hojou Kyousuke asked after looking around for a while and not seeing anything.

"Higashi's kendo club doesn't have a recruitment booth."

"It's the school's flagship club, so they never need to recruit."

"The school doesn't force them to set up a booth. If you want to join, you have to go straight to their dojo," Kisaki Tetta explained.

"Why didn't you say so earlier?"

"I thought you might want to check out some other interesting clubs."

Kisaki Tetta had actually been doing this on purpose.

He wanted to build up an image of being reliable in Hojou Kyousuke's mind, so that eventually, Hojou would trust him and let him make all his decisions.

"I don't have time for other clubs. One kendo club is enough. Also, are you sure you want to join? It's pretty tough."

Hojou Kyousuke glanced at Kisaki Tetta's somewhat frail body.

"I'll stick with it," Kisaki Tetta replied with a gentle smile.

He'd reflected on his earlier approach and decided to change his smile to something less off-putting.

"Do you know the way to the dojo?" Hojou Kyousuke asked.

"Of course, follow me."

"Impressive, Kisaki. Very reliable," Hojou Kyousuke remarked.

It felt good to have someone so knowledgeable around, and he didn't care what Kisaki's plans were.

As long as he had a sword, he felt confident that he could solve any problems.

The kendo dojo was huge—almost as big as the gym at Watergate Elementary.

"Wow, Higashi's kendo club really has a massive dojo," Hojou Kyousuke said, impressed.

Here, he could practice without worrying about anyone coming down to cause trouble.

"That's because the dojo is shared by both the high school and middle school sections," Kisaki Tetta explained.

"Got it."

At that moment, a loud voice called out to them from across the room.

"Hey, kid, you've arrived."

Hojou Kyousuke turned to see Akashi Takeomi, the senior he'd met at the school gate that morning.

"Hello, senior."

"You'd better do well in the test. I already told the captain that we've got a new student who loves kendo. Don't embarrass me. By the way, what's your name?"

"Hojou Kyousuke."

Akashi Takeomi was really enthusiastic, and Hojou Kyousuke couldn't help but laugh awkwardly.

"Let's go. The test is over there. After I talked you up, the captain decided to personally oversee your test."

With that, Akashi Takeomi grabbed Hojou Kyousuke by the arm and led him toward a group of people standing around in a circle. In the middle, two people were sparring.

"That's our captain, Makki Hojou." Akashi Takeomi gestured toward the taller, more imposing figure in the ring.

Hojou Kyousuke followed his gaze.

The man was wearing a pompadour hairstyle, looking every bit the intimidating presence.

He must have been at least 6'3", towering over his sparring partner, who already looked imposing.

Hojou Kyousuke couldn't help but feel a bit of pressure. Was this really the build of a middle schooler?

"Makki Hojou, second-year at Higashi High, drives a red Guren ZⅡ, and pretty much everyone in Tokyo knows him."

"Unlike other clubs, the high school and middle school kendo clubs are managed together, so Makki Hojou is the captain of the entire kendo club," Kisaki Tetta went on, rattling off more information than Hojou Kyousuke had expected.

"Really? His name's the same as mine. But being the boss of Higashi isn't something anyone can just walk into," Hojou Kyousuke said.

Akashi Takeomi shot Kisaki Tetta a curious glance.

"Not yet, but soon enough," Kisaki Tetta replied, adjusting his glasses with a thoughtful look. He had a plan to get Hojou Kyousuke to the top.

Meanwhile, the sparring match had ended, and the captain gestured for them to come forward.

"Let's go. The captain wants to see you now."

"Are you the new student Takeomi was talking about?" Makki Hojou asked, slapping Hojou Kyousuke on the shoulder.

"Yes, I'm Hojou Kyousuke. Thank you, senior, but I'm just a regular kendo enthusiast."

"Well, let's see how good you are. Come on, let's have a match," Makki Hojou said with a grin, slapping Hojou Kyousuke on the shoulder again.

Soon, Hojou Kyousuke was geared up in full kendo armor and standing in the center of the circle.

He was just 13, still growing, and though he'd trained hard and earned a certification, his height barely hit 5'7".

Standing in front of Makki Hojou, he immediately felt the pressure.

"Focus, kid! Put all your energy into it!" Makki Hojou shouted.

"Yes!" Hojou Kyousuke replied, though he remained perfectly still.

In the dojo, he was used to waiting for his opponent to make the first move.

It wasn't out of arrogance—it was because, if he attacked first, his seniors wouldn't even get a chance to respond.

It was a habit he hadn't shaken.

Akashi Takeomi's thoughts were a different story.

'This kid is ignoring the captain? He's asking for trouble. If it weren't for the rules, I'm sure the others would be yelling by now.'

Meanwhile, Kisaki Tetta felt a sense of pride.

'This is it. I knew Hojou Kyousuke was the right choice. Even Makki Hojou can't intimidate him.'
