Chapter 8: Chapter 8: A Thrilling New Adversary
We ended up going to the restaurant that Jack recommended for us and unfortunately every chef there turned our offer to join down. All except for one! Our new chef was a quiet, timid, plain looking young woman with blonde hair named Claudia. She didn't seem like the type who'd be interested in joining a pirate crew, but I got the impression that she just wanted to go somewhere where people appreciated her cooking. It seemed like she had a rough time with her peers at the restaurant.
Either way it didn't matter to me, as we finally got another new crew member. She wouldn't be any help in a fight, but we had plenty of guys capable of handing that already anyway. I was excited after we could mark another important role for our crew off the list. Now we just needed a navigator, a doctor, a shipwright, and Luffy's right I think a pirate crew needs a musician. Though the others didn't agree with me about it having the same urgency as the other roles.
Adding to my excitement of adding another crew member was new bounties. Apparently our scuffle against the two bounty hunters made quite the ruckus at Navy HQ. Jack was a guy that used to be a Rear Admiral in the Navy, so him becoming a pirate was quite a big deal. He received a 75 million berry bounty right off the bat, and my bounty was bumped up to 80 million for adding him to my crew. Yuma even got his first bounty at 15 million for beating a famous bounty hunter himself.
As we were all helping ourselves to one of Claudia's meals, I decided to take the helm so Yuma could come down to eat. As I was sailing I thought of ways I could improve my fighting style. I'd been keeping up with my training during my journey, and having new sparring partners definitely helped. For example, through my matches with Jack I found him to be a bit of a bad match up for me. My fighting style was based around my swordsmanship, and though my sword had the ability to extend, I would be at a disadvantage against long range fighters like Jack.
I remember that Zoro learned how to use flying slashing attacks, but my memory is a bit fuzzy about how he pulled it off. It was something about the "breath of all things" but I'm really sure how that works. Come to think of it, I'd never actually had any real swordsmanship training, maybe I could find someone to train me.
As I was lost in thought it occurred to me that I hadn't checked the Log Pose to see which direction we needed to go. In fact after further inspection, it seems like Yuma forgot to give it to me in the first place. Just as I was about to go get it from him I noticed the silhouette of an island on the horizon directly ahead so I didn't bother going to grab it from him.
After some time, Yuma came rushing up the stairs in a panic. "Sorry Gai! I forgot to give you the Log Pose! But why didn't you come grab it sooner? We might be totally lost now!" He said.
"Yeah I was going to but look. The next island is straight ahead." I said pointing at the island that was getting closer and closer by the second.
"Oh I see." Yuma said calming down. "Here looks like we're getting close. Give me the wheel I'll take us into port."
After a few minutes of sailing Yuma looked down at the Log Pose and noticed something strange. "That's weird, we're right in front of the island but the Log Pose is pointing in a totally different direction. Is it broken or something?" He said.
"Huh? That is weird let me take a look." I said as I examined the Log Pose. "I don't know man. I'm not an expert about these things but it seems fine to me." When I looked back up at the island it was close enough for me to discern more of its features and I noticed how creepy the place looked. In fact, it didn't just look creepy, strangely enough it seemed, familiar. "Oh crap! We need to turn around now!" I shouted.
"What's the problem Gai? I know the place looks creepy but that's no reason to freak out. Plus we couldn't turnaround if we wanted to. The tide is pulling us into port right now."
"You don't get it! This is Gecko Moria's ship! It's Thriller Bark!"
"Huh? What's that?" Yuma said. "Wait! You said Gecko Moria? You mean like one of the Seven Warlords, Gecko Moria?"
"Of course that's who I mean! What other Gecko Moria would I be talking about?"
"This is bad, I heard some stories about that guy back when I was in the Navy. That guy is bad news we shouldn't mess with him." Jack said.
"Yeah I agree. I'd like to avoid getting into a conflict with him if possible." I replied.
Gecko Moria was one of the Seven Warlords of the sea, which were pirates sanctioned by the World Government. Basically the government let them operate however they wanted as long as they took out other pirates for them. Warlords have their bounties frozen, since they work with the World Government, but back when he had an active bounty it was 320 million berries. Suffice to say that he was a pretty heavy hitter. Even though he was probably one of the weakest warlords, the weakest warlord is still really strong compared to the average pirate.
I'm still relatively new to this world, I'm not fully sure how strong I am compared to the strongest people in the series. So I'm not sure if I have what it takes to win against Moria yet. Plus, I don't know what kind of consequences there will be for changing things in the story. I know it'll be inevitable for me to interact with people from the story at some point, but still I don't know if I should directly interfere with the storyline. That being said, if I'm caught by Moria and his crew, I won't have any choice but to fight him.
As I was considering all these things, our ship was definitively captured in Moria's ship. "What do you want to do Captain?" Jack asked me. "We can still try to break out or we could try to confront Moria directly. It's your call."
As I was weighing my options we were approached by many disheveled people you told us about how they've been living in fear ever since Gecko Moria stole their shadow. Moria had the power of the Shadow Shadow fruit. It gave him the power to steal people's shadow's which he would then put into zombies. He was trying to raise an army of zombies to take over the Grand Line. Or something like that, I couldn't remember, it'd been a while since I watched the Thriller Bark Arc.
After explaining their situation an old man who had his shadow stolen said, "Moria is dangerous, you kids should get out of here before he finds you. If not he will take your shadow too."
After seeing the people who had been terrorized by Moria, I came to a conclusion. "Alright that settles it. This whole incident was just a bad stroke of luck. For the Gecko pirates that is. Guys! Let's crush them and help these guys get their shadow's back!" I said punching my fist into my hand.
"Haha! You really are crazy Captain! Attacking a Warlord with only three guys. I like it! Sounds fun!" Jack said with a hearty laugh.
"I don't know about this Gai. But whatever as long as you have your beast swords I think we can take on anyone. Let's go!" Yuma said, trying to sike himself up.
I really do want to help the people who had their shadow's stolen, but also a part of me just thinks it wouldn't be fun to have a chance to fight a Warlord and just run away. Now let's find out who's stronger! Me or Moria!
