Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Equivalent Exchange Mod
From a poor soul with less than 20,000 points in total to a millionaire with tens of millions after settling accounts, Steven managed it all in just one plot.
Of course, he knew well that this was no different from exploiting a game glitch. Even if he tried trading crops like carrots or beets with other nations, he would never again earn such exaggerated bonuses. The first to break new ground always benefits the most.
Fortunately, Steven didn't have further plans in this regard for now.
He wasn't confident that other nations' official organizations would be as easy to deal with as the Inquisition. Not to mention, the Inquisition's willingness to cooperate stemmed largely from Iberia's unique circumstances.
A country where most citizens struggle with basic sustenance is, after all, an exception rather than the norm.
Exploiting a bug once was sufficient; doing so repeatedly would be excessive, even in Steven's eyes.
As for the tens of millions of points he now had, though it looked like a fortune, he knew it wasn't much considering the large-scale mod he was about to unlock.
"Activate the Equivalent Exchange mod," Steven muttered as he checked the system interface and selected the mod. He waited for the familiar popup message that didn't belong to his system's built-in options.
Sure enough, as soon as he selected it, a warning appeared in the bottom-right chatbox:
[Activating the Equivalent Exchange mod will consume 9,000,000 World Acknowledgement Points. Confirm?]
"Confirm."
In an instant, his eight-figure balance lost a zero, but Steven's expression was one of satisfaction, feeling it was worth every point.
If other mods demanded such an exorbitant price, Steven would curse them as a scam. But for this one? He thought it was justified.
It felt like a binding shackle had been lifted from him. Steven felt his body relax completely.
And... that was it. Nothing else happened.
This mod didn't rewrite his stats or grant him new abilities, so he wasn't expecting anything dramatic.
The reason he had chosen to activate it right away wasn't to look for immediate gains.
Equivalent Exchange, as the name suggested, was a mod that allowed him to barter items freely.
Every item in Minecraft had a corresponding EMC (Energy-Matter Currency) value in this mod. With enough points, you could exchange items through a tool called a Transmutation Table. Similarly, unwanted items could be converted into EMC through the mod.
Since arriving in the world of Arknights, Steven had noticed that many commonplace Minecraft resources were completely absent here. While this hadn't been an issue for him so far, it would become a significant limitation when he began diving into mods.
Take gold, for instance—a basic yet essential material in many mods. Steven doubted even the wealthiest nations or organizations in this world could provide cubic meters of gold blocks on demand.
Yet, in mods, gold blocks were worthless, just filler. Blame Minecraft vanilla for making gold one of the least useful minerals!
Not to mention rare items like Wither Skeleton Skulls or Nether Stars—where could he find mobs to farm for those here?
Thus, the Equivalent Exchange mod became the most fundamental and necessary choice for Steven at this stage.
Of course, the mod's high price wasn't just because it allowed free exchange of materials. Steven knew full well the other reason—its late-game tools and weapons were absurdly overpowered. Still, those were far beyond his current reach, and he wasn't sure the world's will would even allow him to use such game-breaking items.
Pulling a portable Transmutation Table from his inventory, Steven felt relieved. Thanks to the table's practicality, he always carried one, even during vanilla survival gameplay.
It was like a personal warehouse—you could pull out any item you wanted.
As expected, the table's stored 2^30 EMC points from his old Minecraft world had been reset to zero in this world.
But since it still retained the crafting recipes for all his previously unlocked items, Steven didn't mind.
Starting fresh wasn't so bad. It wasn't like he lacked the ability to gather EMC points from scratch.
He first dumped all the useless items in his inventory into the table, converting them into tens of thousands of EMC points. This was enough to ensure he wouldn't run out of commonly used items anytime soon.
Thank goodness for the stack of gold blocks he had carried; otherwise, starting from zero would've meant leveling mountains and converting stone into points—a painful grind.
After confirming the table worked as intended, Steven stashed it back into his inventory with a satisfied grin.
The mod's full potential could wait to be explored. For now, he needed to decide which other mod to unlock next.
Having spent a staggering nine million points, his next thought was how to spend the remaining million.
After all, points were meant to be spent, not hoarded. What was the point of keeping them? Let them multiply on their own?
Even the largest mods didn't cost as much as Equivalent Exchange. Unlocking another mod for a million points was entirely feasible.
But Steven's infamous indecisiveness kicked in.
Should he continue being a dashing swordsman? Or try his hand at magic as a sorcerer?
Maybe he could become a modern gun-wielding mechanic for a change?
Or go all out and turn into a vampire?
Dozens of mods were available, each tempting in its own way. Faced with endless possibilities, Steven was momentarily stumped.
Sometimes, having too many cheats is its own kind of problem.
