Chapter 55: Chapter 55: She's Truly, Too Gentle
The brief exchange of glances didn't attract much attention from the other party. Although Steven's unexpected presence here intrigued her slightly, the girl who had just entered the room seemed more concerned about another matter.
Shifting her gaze away from Steven, the white-haired girl quickly noticed the figure of Gladiia, who was standing still and undergoing Gavial's examination.
"Captain!"
With evident joy in her expression, the newly arrived white-haired girl rushed to Gladiia's side, her face brimming with excitement as she called out to her.
However, to her surprise, the captain of the Abyssal Hunters, who was always composed and commanding, simply tilted her head and pressed a finger to her lips, making an unexpectedly "cute" and puzzled expression.
Was she mistaken? What on earth could have happened to turn her captain into someone so unrecognizable?
"It's me, Skadi from the third company. We've fought together before! Even Specter is here. Don't you recognize your own team members?"
Pointing to herself with a slender finger, the girl who introduced herself as Skadi, unwilling to accept the situation, also propped up another sleeping white-haired girl lying nearby Steven. With a bitter expression, she questioned the confused Gladiia.
"Miss Skadi, I understand you're anxious, but please hear me out. The lady you're referring to, Miss Gladiia, has suffered a severe head injury, which has affected her consciousness and memory. Right now, her mental state is comparable to that of a six- to eight-year-old child."
"And also, Miss Specter just took her medication and fell asleep. If you wake her up again, you'll be responsible for putting her back to sleep."
Gavial, who had been observing Skadi's increasingly irrational actions, sighed and intervened, putting an end to her frenzy.
After a recent examination, Gavial was confident that aside from her consciousness and memory being impaired, Gladiia was in excellent health—perhaps even overly so. Previous injuries from battles that were evident in Skadi and Specter were completely absent from Gladiia. Or rather, it seemed as though they had recently been healed by some unknown means.
This thought prompted Gavial to glance at Steven, who was standing aside, trying to blend into the background.
Chances were high that this situation was closely tied to him, Gladiia's so-called "relative."
"How could this happen?"
Hearing Gavial's explanation, Skadi's spirit deflated, as if her hopes had been dashed. Her entire demeanor exuded despair.
"Was it the same group of people who harmed Specter? I'll make them pay for this."
But soon, she regained her composure, tightly gripping the oddly shaped greatsword on her back. The anger in her eyes nearly materialized.
If she discovered who was responsible for Gladiia's current state, she would never forgive them.
Sensing the growing rage and palpable killing intent emanating from Skadi, Steven awkwardly edged closer to the wall.
The feeling of being confronted by a victim's relative was… difficult to describe.
Perhaps it was just that he was too much at fault—after all, the incident had indeed started because of him.
However, Gavial had no intention of letting him off the hook. After hearing Skadi's question, she unhesitatingly pointed her finger at Steven.
"That's a question you should ask him. He's the one who brought Miss Gladiia to Rhodes Island. In a way, he's her guardian now."
"Guardian?"
With a puzzled expression, Skadi's gaze once again met Steven's.
At that moment, Gladiia, who had seemed groggy and half-asleep, suddenly became alert when she saw Steven. She quickly got up from the hospital bed, ran to his side, and grabbed his sleeve.
"Dada!"
The clear and loud exclamation left Skadi wide-eyed.
"She called you Dada?"
"If you'd like, you can call me that too."
Caught off guard and unsure how to explain, Steven spoke without thinking. By the time he realized what he had said, he saw Skadi's pale face flush bright red in embarrassment.
Well, it seemed that making offhanded jokes too often had made him blurt out inappropriate things even in serious situations.
Awkwardly chuckling, Steven quickly corrected himself.
"No, what I meant was, this is a complicated situation. Perhaps I can explain."
Faced with Skadi's anger, Steven, feeling entirely at fault, had no choice but to concede. If he were in the right, he wouldn't have backed down, but unfortunately, he wasn't.
Being someone who valued reason and fairness, Steven found it hard to act unreasonably.
"Fine, explain."
Surprisingly, despite her anger that seemed on the verge of erupting like a volcano, Skadi managed to restrain herself and waited for his explanation.
She truly was, too gentle.
It was just a pity that Steven couldn't bring himself to admit that he had caused all this.
If he did, not only would he become the laughingstock of Rhodes Island, but word would spread about how he'd managed to knock someone into amnesia and end up becoming their "dad."
Steven could already imagine that green-haired crocodile lady gleefully sharing this juicy gossip.
If it were him, he'd probably do the same.
"Actually, when I found her, she was being attacked by some creatures from the sea and was already injured. After I treated her, perhaps out of instinct, she subconsciously started seeing me as her father."
With a friendly smile, Steven explained the situation, omitting a few unimportant details.
Surely this wasn't lying?
"If I remember correctly, those creatures were called Seaborn or something."
He added the name of the creatures to make his explanation more convincing.
Upon hearing the name, Skadi's expression softened.
If it had been the Seaborn, it made sense. After all, only monsters of their caliber could reduce someone like Gladiia, a captain of the Abyssal Hunters second company, to such a state.
She wasn't someone who could be easily defeated by mere land dwellers.
