Chapter 155: Chapter 146: Uncle John
The atmosphere in the conference room was awkward.
Who would have thought that Homelander would just walk right in?
And at the exact moment when they were discussing how to deal with him.
Among everyone present, the most terrified was undoubtedly Dr. Vogelbaum, who had come to the Department of Defense because of Edgar's death.
Now, being questioned by Homelander, Dr. Vogelbaum's forehead was already covered in sweat.
The general in the conference room saw this and quickly stood up. "Dr. Vogelbaum is—"
Before he could finish speaking, Homelander, hands clasped behind his back, raised one arm and pointed at him.
Then, Homelander turned around with a friendly smile.
"Sit down."
"General."
"I wasn't asking you."
"Please don't interrupt my conversation with Dr. Vogelbaum."
Though Homelander was all smiles, the more he smiled, the more the general felt an invisible pressure.
He glanced at Wilson, who gave a slight nod, and only then did the general sit down.
Homelander then walked around the long conference table, passing by Dr. Kael, who had a cybernetic eye, before stopping behind Dr. Vogelbaum. He placed both hands on the doctor's shoulders and pressed lightly.
"Doctor, you're not young anymore."
"A racing heart isn't good for you."
"Calm down."
"I'm not going to eat you."
"What are you so afraid of?"
"Besides, you still haven't answered my question."
Dr. Vogelbaum swallowed hard before replying, "Secretary Wilson hired me as a consultant for the Department of Defense."
"A consultant?"
Homelander's gaze fell on the box in front of Dr. Vogelbaum.
Wilson and the others' expressions subtly changed, but they remained composed.
Homelander lightly patted the doctor's shoulder with a faint smile. "What's this? The Department of Defense is researching superhumans now?"
"I don't know," Dr. Vogelbaum answered.
"I do."
Homelander looked at Wilson. "So, Secretary, you can answer this question. I'll allow you to speak."
Wilson cleared his throat. "Homelander, you're quite humorous."
"Yes."
"We invited Dr. Vogelbaum to lead a project."
"The Super Soldier Program."
"We want to make our military stronger, more competitive."
"Imagine if our soldiers all had extraordinary abilities."
"They would be invincible on the battlefield. We would never have to fear any threat again."
"Our citizens, our children, and our parents would all live in peace."
"We are building a better nation."
Homelander burst into laughter. "Beautiful words, Secretary."
"But forgive me for saying this—we don't actually have any threats to worry about, do we?"
"After all, we are the greatest threat."
"But don't worry, I won't interfere."
"Super soldiers or super generals, it makes no difference. As long as you're happy."
Homelander picked up the syringe on the table. "What is this?"
"Dr. Vogelbaum, is this your latest creation?"
Dr. Vogelbaum's hands trembled slightly on his lap before he replied, "Yes, it's the latest result of the Super Soldier Program."
"But it's still unstable and not ready for combat applications. We need extensive clinical trials."
"Is that so?"
Suddenly, Homelander placed the syringe against Dr. Vogelbaum's neck.
Immediately, everyone in the room—except for the Secretary of Defense—stood up.
The general pointed at Homelander and shouted, "What are you doing? Let go of Dr. Vogelbaum immediately!"
"Homelander, don't go too far! This is the Department of Defense!"
"Let go, or I'll call security!"
Homelander glanced around but showed no intention of moving the syringe away.
Lowering himself, he whispered into Dr. Vogelbaum's ear with a smile.
"This isn't actually a Super Soldier Program product, is it?"
"Let me guess—this was developed specifically to counter me?"
"If you don't tell the truth…"
"I'll inject you right now."
Dr. Vogelbaum's breathing grew heavy, his chest rising and falling.
He gritted his teeth.
Then said in a low voice, "I'm not lying to you."
"This is the latest product of the Super Soldier Program."
"Oh?" Homelander scanned the room, his gaze finally landing on Wilson.
Then he laughed and removed the syringe, patting the doctor's shoulder.
"My apologies, Dr. Vogelbaum."
"I was just joking with you. Do you mind?"
Dr. Vogelbaum shook his head. "N-No, I don't mind."
"That's great."
Homelander placed the syringe back into the box, closed it, and slipped it into Dr. Vogelbaum's pocket.
"Since it's such an important item, you'd better keep it safe."
"It'd be quite troublesome if you lost it."
Then, he walked toward Wilson with a charming smile. "Now, back to our previous topic."
"I want command of Delta Force."
"When will you give it to me?"
Wilson smiled. "Homelander, you want command of Delta Force? That's not a problem."
"After all, you serve the country, and you handle dangerous missions. Naturally, you need the best soldiers."
"But I can't give you the entire Delta Force. They have various assignments."
"I can only give you a hundred men."
Homelander laughed. "Delta Force has 2,500 men, and you're giving me only 100?"
"Secretary, that doesn't seem fair."
Wilson's smile didn't falter.
"Homelander, I absolutely trust you."
"But others won't see it that way. If people knew that Delta Force was entirely under your command, it would cause panic."
"Besides, I don't think we need 2,500 men just for counterterrorism operations within our borders."
"Wouldn't you agree?"
Homelander walked behind Wilson and lifted the American flag hanging nearby.
Smiling, he said,
"That makes some sense."
"But 100 men is still too few. I need at least 500."
"And I want them fully equipped—whatever they use now, they'll continue using."
This time, Wilson didn't bargain. He immediately said, "No problem. In one week."
"These men will report to you."
Only then did Homelander nod and walk out the door.
Before leaving, he turned back to the room with a smile.
"Gentlemen, have a pleasant day."
Then, he shut the door and left.
As soon as he was gone, the general rushed to the door, peeked outside, then called in a security team.
Only after that did he return to the room.
Wilson remained silent.
The general glanced at him and said grimly, "Homelander is utterly lawless!"
"He doesn't respect us at all!"
Dr. Vogelbaum wiped his sweat with a handkerchief and said, "But luckily, he's as arrogant as ever. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to fool him so easily."
"Secretary, are we really going to hand over 500 Delta Force soldiers to him?" a colonel asked.
Another officer said gravely, "If he commands a fully armed force of 500 elite soldiers, he could do anything."
Wilson finally spoke.
"Of course, this can't continue."
"But we have no better options."
"You can't judge Homelander using normal human logic."
"If I had refused just now, we might all be dead already."
"I don't think he would hesitate just because this is the Department of Defense."
"For now, until Dr. Vogelbaum and Dr. Kael complete their research…"
"Our only option is to satisfy Homelander, keep him appeased, and stabilize him."
"Until then, avoid provoking him at all costs."
The officers in the room knew this was the truth, so they reluctantly nodded in agreement.
