Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past
The world was different before the Tower.
The sun shone brighter, the air felt lighter, and life carried a rhythm that felt unbreakable. High above the bustling cities, atop a throne made of divine light, sat the Celestial God of Order. He was a being of immense power, one whose very existence held the cosmos in balance.
This god, neither cruel nor kind, wielded authority over life, death, and the flow of time itself. Yet, for all his power, he was trapped—bound by the very laws he created. The Tower of Eternity was not just a structure but a chain forged by the Ancients to control him.
And so, the god waited. For millennia, he watched as mortals attempted to climb the Tower, hoping to break its curse. None succeeded.
Until one day, he made a choice.
A piercing light filled the celestial throne room as the god summoned every ounce of his power. He shattered his own divinity, casting himself down from the heavens into the mortal realm. The shackles binding him grew weaker as he fell, and with a final surge of will, he sealed his memories deep within the recesses of his mortal mind.
That was the day Jin-Seok was born.
The flashback faded, leaving behind a lingering question: When will Jin-Seok remember who he truly is?
The sound of his own labored breathing brought Jin-Seok back to the present. He stood at the base of the spiral staircase, his body still sore from the battle on the first floor. The dim light of the chamber flickered around him, casting long shadows that danced along the walls.
"This Tower… there's something off about it," Jin-Seok muttered under his breath.
He gripped the rusty sword tightly, its weight comforting despite its poor condition. Each step up the staircase brought a mix of unease and determination. The Tower wasn't just a test—it was alive, and it was watching him.
As he ascended, his thoughts wandered to the fragments of his past. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was more than an ordinary human. The System, the Tower, even his own survival—they all felt tied to something greater.
[System Notification: Ascending to Floor 2.]
Difficulty Increased. Prepare for the Trial.
The staircase ended abruptly, opening into a vast, open space. The air was thick with humidity, and the sound of rushing water echoed in the distance. Jin-Seok stepped cautiously into the room, his eyes scanning the new environment.
The floor was covered in a dense jungle, with towering trees and thick vines creating a labyrinth of greenery. Pools of water dotted the area, their surfaces rippling with unseen movement.
[System Notification: Floor 2 - Trial of the Predators.]
Objective: Survive for 30 minutes.
Warning: High-level predators detected.
"Survive?" Jin-Seok muttered, his grip on the sword tightening.
A low growl echoed from the trees, followed by the sound of rustling leaves. Jin-Seok's heart raced as he turned toward the source of the noise.
Out of the shadows emerged a massive feline creature, its sleek black fur blending seamlessly with the jungle. Its eyes glowed a piercing yellow, and its fangs gleamed as it snarled at him.
"That doesn't look like a normal predator…" Jin-Seok said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before he could react, the creature pounced, its claws slicing through the air. Jin-Seok dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack. He swung his sword, but the creature was too fast, retreating into the shadows before he could land a hit.
"Great," he muttered. "It's playing with me."
The jungle seemed to come alive as more sounds echoed around him. He wasn't dealing with just one predator—there were more. Jin-Seok backed up against a tree, his mind racing.
He had to survive for 30 minutes, but how?
Jin-Seok pressed his back against the thick trunk of a tree, his chest heaving as he tried to steady his breathing. The jungle seemed alive, not just with the predators hunting him but with an oppressive energy that tugged at his every sense.
"Think, Jin-Seok. You can't just wait here," he muttered.
The glowing yellow eyes of the feline creature appeared again, this time from a different angle. It wasn't alone. Two more pairs of eyes emerged from the shadows, their movements slow and predatory.
A low growl echoed through the clearing, and Jin-Seok gritted his teeth. He glanced down at the rusted sword in his hand. It wouldn't hold up against one predator, let alone three.
[System Notification: New Skill Available.]
Skill Unlocked: Basic Awareness (Passive, Level 1).
Description: Sharpened senses improve reaction time and allow detection of nearby threats.
The moment the notification appeared, Jin-Seok felt a subtle change. His hearing sharpened, picking up the faint rustle of leaves and the soft padding of paws against the ground. His vision grew more focused, the dim light of the jungle no longer an obstacle.
He could see them clearly now—three massive predators circling him, their sleek bodies blending almost seamlessly with the shadows.
"Alright," he whispered, gripping his sword tightly. "If you want me, come and get me."
The first predator lunged, its claws outstretched. Jin-Seok sidestepped, slashing downward with his sword. The blade scraped against the creature's hide, but the strike lacked the power to do significant damage.
The beast snarled, retreating back into the shadows. The other two predators moved in, flanking him from both sides. Jin-Seok spun, his newly enhanced senses guiding his movements. He dodged one set of claws and struck out at the other, managing to graze the creature's side.
[System Alert: Minor Damage Inflicted.]
Combat Tip: Utilize the environment to gain an advantage.
"Utilize the environment?" Jin-Seok muttered, glancing around.
His gaze landed on a thick vine hanging from one of the trees. An idea formed in his mind. He moved quickly, weaving through the dense jungle as the predators pursued him. The rusted sword was a hindrance, but he wasn't about to give up.
Reaching the vine, Jin-Seok grabbed hold and swung upward, pulling himself onto a sturdy branch. From his elevated position, he had a clearer view of the predators below. They prowled around the base of the tree, their glowing eyes scanning the darkness.
"Let's see how you like this," he said, slicing through the vine with his sword.
The severed vine dropped to the ground, and Jin-Seok grabbed another. This one was thicker, sturdy enough to support more weight. He tied one end around a branch and fashioned a crude snare with the other.
[System Notification: Improvised Trap Created.]
Skill Progress: Improvised Weapon (Level 1) → Improvised Weapon (Level 2).
The predators, sensing his movements, began to climb the tree. Jin-Seok worked quickly, positioning himself above them. When the first predator leaped onto a branch, he swung the vine-snare downward, catching it around the creature's neck.
The beast let out a guttural roar as it struggled, but Jin-Seok pulled with all his strength, yanking the creature off the branch. It crashed to the ground below, the impact enough to disorient it.
"That's one down," Jin-Seok muttered, sweat dripping down his face.
The remaining two predators climbed faster, their growls growing louder. Jin-Seok didn't wait. He grabbed another vine and swung to a neighboring tree, putting distance between himself and the predators.
As he landed, his foot caught on a loose root, and he stumbled, falling to the ground. Pain shot through his ankle, and he cursed under his breath.
[System Alert: Injury Detected.]
Minor Sprain. Movement speed reduced by 10%.
"Fantastic," he muttered, struggling to stand.
The predators wasted no time. They leaped down from the tree, closing in on him. Jin-Seok swung his sword in a wide arc, forcing them to keep their distance.
"Come on!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the jungle. "Is that all you've got?"
The predators lunged simultaneously, their claws aimed for his chest. Jin-Seok ducked, rolling to the side despite the pain in his ankle. He swung upward, the blade catching one of the creatures in the jaw.
The beast howled, staggering backward. Jin-Seok pressed the attack, driving the sword into its throat. The creature collapsed, its body dissolving into black smoke.
[System Notification: Predator Defeated.]
Reward: +2 Strength, +1 Agility.
Only one predator remained, its glowing eyes locked onto Jin-Seok. The creature snarled, its body tense as it prepared to strike. Jin-Seok braced himself, his breath ragged.
Time seemed to slow as the predator charged. Jin-Seok tightened his grip on the sword, waiting for the right moment. When the creature leaped, he sidestepped, slamming the blade into its side.
The beast let out a final growl before collapsing, its body dissipating into smoke like the others.
[System Notification: All Predators Defeated.]
Floor 2 Trial Complete.
Jin-Seok fell to his knees, his entire body trembling from exhaustion. The oppressive energy of the jungle began to fade, replaced by a strange calm.
[System Notification: Level Up!]
Current Level: 3

He stared at the notification, a faint smile tugging at his lips. He was alive. For now, that was enough.
The ground beneath him shifted, and the jungle dissolved into darkness. Jin-Seok felt the familiar pull of the Tower's magic as he was transported to the next floor.
When the light returned, he found himself standing in another chamber, smaller and quieter than the jungle. A single pedestal stood in the center, holding a glowing orb.
Jin-Seok approached cautiously, his sword still in hand.
"Let's see what's next," he muttered, reaching for the orb.
As his fingers brushed against its surface, a new notification appeared.
[System Notification: Floor 3 Unlocked.]
New Objective: Awaiting Challenger.
