Chapter 31 - Legion (1)
“Se-seeing it like this, they are quite numerous.”
“Don’t let your guard down. The moment one place is breached, it’s all over.”
Finally, the demon race allied forces could face the enemies swarming from all directions. Their numbers were at least three times their own.
Being generally large in size, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the area was covered in a black wave teeming with them.
‘Based on the reports, and this enormous number of monsters, they can’t be fighting on their own will.’
Orc Baron Zieg, who had personally taken the field in armor, gritted his teeth. The momentum of the enemies they actually faced was not to be taken lightly.
The monster army existing before their eyes had more destructive power than imagined.
“They’re charging first!”
“Hold your positions!”
There was no time for preparation or taunting each other.
As if they had been waiting for the chance to charge, the monsters thrust their bodies into the hastily completed defensive formation without a moment’s hesitation.
Huge assault troops were moving to the front, surrounded by countless common troops filling the area.
If they didn’t respond at all, the assault troops would sweep them away with their sharp, massive blades and heavy bodies.
“Magic cannons! Fire!”
But the demon races had a plan too. Following Zieg’s order, the mercenary mages who had brought huge cannons simultaneously activated the spells engraved on them.
These cannons, which fired powerful magic bullets using magic stones, were indispensable on the battlefields of the demon realm.
“That’s right!”
Although their firepower was not as strong as the giant turrets used for city defense, when the explosive shells burst, many enemies who couldn’t withstand it fell to the ground.
“Th-they’re firing shells too!”
But at that moment, the monsters also began to counterattack.
Seeing countless lumps of flesh flying in a parabolic arc over a long distance as if shot from a catapult, Zieg realized these were the throwing troops he had heard rumors about and gritted his teeth.
“Archers, shoot them down. And quickly cast a barrier!”
Zieg urged the Orc longbowmen with large bows to snipe the shells flying through the air, and pressed the mages and shamans to raise a barrier.
The biological bombs bursting in mid-air scattered poison gas and liquid on the ground, and they struggled to hold their positions while coughing to avoid succumbing to the strong poison.
“Defensive spell complete!”
Almost simultaneously, a translucent magical barrier began to slowly spread, covering the formation.
For a moment, both the fierce charge of the assault troops and the biological bombs falling from the sky were blocked by the barrier.
“Break it!”
Seeing this, the Queen flinched and urged her soldiers to break the barrier. It’s difficult to break with pure physical force alone, but if they keep applying shock, even a magic barrier won’t be able to withstand it.
“The enemy’s attacks are chipping away at the barrier. We need to regroup!”
“But if the barrier breaks, their bombs will immediately fly in. It’s impossible to shoot down all of them. Then…!”
By now, countless enemies had spread out like a wide fan, pounding from all directions. Zieg made a decision as he watched the barrier slowly starting to crack.
“Send out the mobile unit!”
It would be dangerous if the enemy’s poisonous bombs fell through the gap exposed while temporarily disabling the barrier and raising it again. To prevent this, Zieg charged the mobile unit he had separately positioned at the rear.
Composed of those with good mobility like Centaurs and wolf riders, they crossed the ground in an instant to circle around the battlefield and snipe the throwing troops who were busy throwing bombs at the rear.
“Do they think this is their chance?”
The Queen smirked as she watched this through the eyes of the scout troops in the sky. In fact, the demon race allied forces should have been killing all the scout troops in the sky first.
Otherwise, they couldn’t keep up with the computational power of the hive mind commanding troops while overlooking the battlefield in real-time.
“Hurry and run. Our mission is crucial! If we fail our mission, the main force will be annihilated!”
Centaur mercenary captain Duce. He fired the bow in his hand while galloping across the plains at full speed.
‘As expected, those stupid beasts only crave the prey before their eyes. Now they’re finished by us.’
Duce, running with his comrades, grinned as he saw the enemies not particularly trying to stop them despite their obvious flanking maneuver.
Even the throwing troops, their targets, were busy producing and throwing bombs as if they couldn’t see them.
At this rate, the throwing troops would be slaughtered by them, and the monsters, without rear support, would crash into the allied forces’ defensive line and be completely annihilated.
“Let’s go! Would the great demon races lose to mere demonic beasts?”
Duce, boosting morale, encouraged those around him and raised his full power.
The entire mobile unit running with him had their hearts pounding at the thought of becoming the main players in this war.
“…Huh?”
“Now. Pounce.”
But at that moment. As the ground in the area shook all at once, those who had been shallowly buried in the ground revealed themselves simultaneously.
What appeared along with the dust bursting here and there were monsters that had been lying in ambush.
“Im-impossible. They set a trap for us?! These things?!”
The mobile unit, including Duce, began to panic in shock.
Suddenly surrounded, the mobile unit lost its charging power and had to face the enemies that had been lying in ambush.
“Stay calm! There aren’t many! We just need to kill these things and complete our mission!”
Still, Duce was maintaining his composure for now.
Lowering his bow and instead grabbing and swinging a long spear, Duce’s spear began to glow with magic power.
This is precisely why demon races and demonic beasts can never be fundamentally the same. When swinging a spear imbued with magic power, even those physically superior would be cut and shattered in one strike.
“N-no, this can’t be…!”
But at that moment, Duce’s swung spear was blocked by something.
It was a particularly large creature that looked similar to other monsters, but its carapace had a strangely reddish glow.
“Alpha type, sweep them away.”
The alpha type common species that had blocked Duce’s magic-enhanced spear with a reddish barrier immediately rushed towards Duce and extended the poisonous stinger attached to its back.
“Kuhek.”
Duce, who had been resisting with his forelegs raised, was pierced consecutively in the stomach and chest, and staggered with disbelieving eyes.
‘How could a mere monster have stronger magic power than me…’
It’s just a protective barrier. However, the concentration was the problem.
With a highly concentrated barrier containing an unimaginable amount of magic power, it remained impenetrable, and instead, the demon races, including Duce, began to fall victim to the poisonous stingers.
[The alpha type test appears to be successful. Those who tried to overwhelm our forces with magic power are now being overwhelmed in return]
“That was quite satisfactory.”
Even as Centaur mercenary captain Duce died so miserably, the Queen was merely pleased to gain additional data for testing.
With a near-perfect ambush and the first appearance of the alpha types, the Queen immediately crushed the morale of the enemy mobile unit and began to ruthlessly massacre the surrounded mobile unit that couldn’t escape.
It was to kill every single one without exception and use them as nutrients.
“Aaargh, mere demonic beasts dare!”
“I’m grateful if you continue to believe us to be mere demonic beasts until the end.”
Although not a few resisted heroically, knowing that death was inevitable anyway, the Queen moved her soldiers as if such resistance was futile, annihilating the mobile unit with numerical superiority.
“Those who went out to attack the enemy have been annihilated!”
“Th-their bombardment continues. Moreover, unknown monsters have joined the battlefield, and each of them is surrounded by a barrier made of magic power!”
The main force, tasked with holding out, could also witness their dispatched mobile unit falling into a trap and being annihilated in reverse.
However, showing no signs of despair, Zieg had to hurry to command actions as he watched the warriors falling one by one and countless enemies appearing, trampling their corpses.
‘Is this truly hell?’
With the defensive line slowly crumbling and his mind becoming hazy from the incessantly falling poison gas bombs, Zieg watched as the alpha types surrounded by magic power pushed back his subordinates while maintaining their barriers.
“What on earth is that now.”
And that wasn’t the only problem.
A mysterious being appeared at the front. With her pink hair fluttering, she was swinging a spear wrapped in intense magic power, bringing down Orc warriors one by one with her excellent spear techniques.
Faced with a series of events beyond common sense, Zieg gave up on trying to think in detail at that point.
It was meaningless to try to figure out the identity of the opponent anymore.
Now was the time to desperately flee and survive to buy time. And he had to make sure to inform others that these crazy monsters of the borderlands were beings of a different class from ordinary demonic beasts. Before those monsters continued to grow and conquer the area.
