Chapter 39 - Lord (4)
“Quickly, prepare our defenses. We don’t know when those monster bastards will swarm into our land!”
The Orc territory had completely collapsed. They got severely burned for trying to get a piece of the action, and the troops they’d sent were annihilated, with only a fraction barely returning alive.
As the Orcs had initially proclaimed, they too could no longer dismiss the enemies as mere demonic beasts.
“They came in endless waves and tore us apart without a shred of mercy.”
“They can’t be stopped. When they come, it’s all over!”
Moreover, the survivors, already completely terrified, recklessly produced exaggerated and inflated rumors.
Although based on facts, the desperate cries of survivors depicting the enemies as incarnations of fear and death were of no help in maintaining order and the ruler’s governance.
“Strictly crack down on those spreading false rumors! And hurry with the defense preparations. Conscript troops and arm them!”
Lamia Baron Rosalyn, with her beautiful female upper body, gritted her teeth while her scale-covered lower body writhed.
From her perspective, it was like being struck by lightning out of the blue.
Of course, when the Orc territory fell, she had sent troops thinking it was an opportunity to gain a piece of land under the pretext of helping, but she ended up paying a much higher price than her greed warranted.
“And quickly contact the surrounding lords. Tell them to join forces to subjugate those monster bastards.”
“Ca-calm down, my lord. For now, there’s no guarantee that those devils will immediately invade our territory, right?”
At her urgent words, her retainers looked at each other uneasily. They didn’t know yet what actions the enemies would take after occupying the Orc territory.
“That’s right. Think about it. If they ride that momentum to invade Ludas’s territory, it could rather be an opportunity for us. Doesn’t it mean two annoying forces will fight each other and be weakened?”
Among them, some even suggested using this situation to their advantage.
Surely those monsters wouldn’t come all the way here, far away, instead of attacking Hobgoblin Ludas’s territory, which was closest, they argued.
It was certainly a reasonable point, and Rosalyn was momentarily tempted. Ludas was a kind of screen occupying the largest territory in the area and preventing surrounding forces from growing.
She couldn’t help but be intrigued by the suggestion that they might be able to remove this frustrating screen.
“My-My Lord! An enormous number of devil bastards are swarming this way!”
However, this hopeful circuit was shattered in just a few days.
For some incomprehensible reason, the enemies didn’t touch Ludas’s territory at all and instead chose to attack Rosalyn’s territory first.
“Quickly summon the troops. Scrape together whatever we have! And, and call Uruka. We’ll need his strength!”
Rosalyn, turning pale, gathered troops while creating a fuss mentioning the name Uruka.
Uruka’s force was a group rapidly gaining power and fame within Rosalyn’s territory recently. It seemed that only with the strength of this force, which had grown so quickly that even the lord Rosalyn had to be cautious of them, could they overcome this crisis.
* * *
“Just one move from those devil bastards, and the surrounding territories are in an uproar. Well, it’s understandable. Already one baron-level territory has crumbled.”
Kruger sighed, looking at the panicked atmosphere around them.
As if Rosalyn’s fuss was directly transmitted, the entire territory they had crossed over to was now in chaos due to the approaching enemies.
It was like a golden age for the mercenaries in the area. The lords were urgently pouring out money to hire them. It was the same for them too.
Although there were only two of them now, Kruger aimed to gradually increase his companions and grow his forces using this opportunity.
“Are you really sure about this?”
“Of course.”
Kruger, who had naturally decided to participate in the war, looked back at his only companion.
She blinked her red eyes and nodded with a smirk.
‘She certainly looks human, but there’s something not quite human about her.’
The woman, who had hastily been asked by Seira to give herself a name and called herself Ria, was clearly close to human in Kruger’s eyes. But appearance wasn’t everything.
His sharp warrior’s intuition kept telling him that she was no ordinary being.
“Where are the mercenaries being deployed?”
“It might be different for each. For now, we need to go to the city in the southeast of the territory.”
The participating mercenaries were deployed to needed positions. And she was particularly fixated on that location.
The reason, of course, was to barely fail in attacking only the city where they were.
‘If there’s a place that uniquely held out while everywhere else fell, it would help raise our reputation.’
It meant she had officially started her work. It didn’t matter if one small local city was ignored.
Of course, she didn’t intend to leave it alone until the end. Anyway, when everywhere else collapsed, the survivors would all have to flee at once.
‘After that, I’ll have a proper showdown with the player forces. I’ll probably have a higher chance of winning.’
And her real target was the player forces growing their power within the Lamia territory.
Like the player who had grown their own forces and driven out Kruger, the original heir, they would eventually take the territory from Rosalyn.
The Queen willingly planned to sweep them away first. It was because she calculated that, just like herself now, if it weren’t for the variables possessed by players, she could conquer and occupy this world without problems.
“This is unexpected, the Gargoyle territory is participating too.”
One variable was that the neighboring Gargoyle Baron, Icon, had proposed an alliance to Rosalyn, suggesting they fight together.
“Ha, I guess he got burned pretty badly too. Does he think they’re next after us?”
“My-My Lord. Please forget past grudges and accept the alliance proposal.”
Rosalyn gritted her teeth upon receiving the Gargoyles’ proposal. It was because she had not been on good terms with the neighboring Gargoyle territory for generations.
However, those around her advised that now was not the time to be picky about such things. She herself knew that for now, she had to form an alliance.
“Previously, the Gargoyles’ numbers were too few, so it couldn’t be helped, but this time if we properly form an alliance and receive support, it’ll be different. They say those monsters can’t attack the sky.”
“That’s right. If the Gargoyles attack properly, we can hold out sufficiently.”
It was already known that the enemies’ anti-air capabilities were poor.
This was also why the Gargoyles’ pride had risen, and they were shouting that this time would be different.
Although it wasn’t a behavior she liked, Rosalyn, needing strength to protect her territory, let the Gargoyle reinforcements into her territory.
“Don’t worry. Those worthless insects that spend their whole lives crawling on the ground will be annihilated by us.”
“…Right. That’s very reassuring. I hope you can continue to win as much as that spirit.”
In fact, the Gargoyle warrior chief who led the reinforcements stood before Rosalyn and displayed confidence with a very proud attitude.
Rosalyn herself flinched at the mention of spending a lifetime crawling on the ground, feeling a bit stung.
“Everyone, spread your wings! This time it doesn’t matter how many of them there are. We’ll reduce their numbers as much as possible!”
Afterwards, as if to establish dominance definitively, the armed Gargoyle forces all took to the sky at once.
It was to attack the approaching enemies first to boost morale. Anyway, they had confirmed in the recent battle that the devils had no means to attack the air, so they were full of thoughts of massacring freely and raising military achievements.
“It seems I’ll be testing sooner than expected. All flying types, move out.”
But the Queen, watching this through her avatar’s body, smirked as she saw countless Gargoyles flying over her head.
The legion is evolving even at this moment. Not settling for even a single moment, not being complacent, just looking ahead and advancing.
That was their ability and the authority given to conquer this world.
The moment the Gargoyles showed the superiority of flight ability, and the moment the legion recognized that they needed to catch up, countermeasures were already prepared.
[Total of 4,233 flying type individuals mobilized]
This was the result. The spectacle of countless flying beasts taking off all at once was a large force that the Queen had mass-produced in just a few days by mobilizing all the legion’s capabilities.
The number of countless monsters, looking like a flock of migratory birds or locust swarms covering the sky, was several times more than the Gargoyles.
They began to gain altitude to pounce on the Gargoyles from above, who were only paying attention to the ground, and the two massive groups approaching each other in the sky would encounter each other before long.
