Became the Weapon Monopolist of the Gods

Chapter 25

Sejun took Joan to a Korean restaurant.

“Mr. Sejun, there’s pepper here.”

Joan’s eyes widened as she looked at the peppercorn jar on the table.

“Joan hasn’t tried pepper before, has she?”

“I’ve only seen the bishop use it.”

In the Middle Ages, ‘pepper’ was a luxury item.

People would gift it to each other and collect it like jewels.

Nobles would flaunt their wealth by using pepper in front of commoners.

Seeing a pepper jar on every table made Joan slightly nervous.

“Is this an expensive place?”

“Yes, it is a bit pricey.”

Joan’s amusing reaction made me want to tease her a little.

When various side dishes like kimchi, japchae, and dried anchovies were laid out, Joan seemed overwhelmed.

“Mr. Sejun, can we just go? A single bread is enough for me.”

She seemed surprised by the large variety compared to what she expected.

Foreigners are often amazed by the number of side dishes at Korean restaurants.

Joan’s reaction was even more exaggerated.

I quickly reassured her so she wouldn’t get up.

“Don’t worry, these are all common foods.”

“These?”

“Yes, feel free to eat as much as you like.”

When I explained that pepper is now an ordinary spice available to everyone, Joan looked surprised but puffed her cheeks.

She seemed to have noticed I intentionally told her late to tease her.

“But you bought me clothes too, is it alright for me to eat this?”

“You can help me later in return.”

“If there’s anything I can do, please let me know.”

By framing it as a debt, Joan finally relaxed.

Before eating, Joan folded her hands and offered a short prayer.

Unlike modern lengthy prayers, Joan who hadn’t learned to read the Bible simply closed her eyes briefly.

Watching how I ate with utensils, Joan started eating rice with doenjang soup.

Honestly, I was a bit nervous.

Though I brought her to try Korean food, I wasn’t sure if someone used to bland medieval cuisine would enjoy it.

“It’s delicious!”

My worries were unnecessary.

Joan’s small mouth opened wide as she chewed happily.

“This salty soup is still tasty.”

“That’s doenjang soup.”

Joan continued eating spoonfuls of the soup with rice, not stopping despite its saltiness.

“Oh, this is good too.”

Starting with japchae, Joan ate everything – kimchi, spinach, bulgogi – without hesitation.

Fortunately, it seemed to suit her taste.

‘By the way, she eats surprisingly well.’

Her small mouth chewed quietly, yet somehow her bowls kept emptying.

This was different from her previous minimal eating habits during the Hundred Years’ War.

Apparently, this was the real Joan – a girl who enjoyed food without being picky.

After finishing our meal, we aimlessly wandered through the city streets.

The neon lights illuminating the streets, cars driving through downtown, people rushing while looking at their phones…

These everyday sights to me must be completely new experiences for Joan.

“Mr. Sejun, look at that, it’s coffee.”

Joan pointed cautiously at a large Dunkin Donuts coffee advertisement.

“Coffee was once considered the devil’s drink.”

But in the past, coffee was truly regarded as a sinful beverage for heathens.

Joan found it curious to see it openly advertised on the streets.

“That’s a baptized drink, Joan.”

“Coffee?”

“They say it tasted good enough to receive baptism.”

‘To think such a delicious drink was only for heathens!’ The 16th century pope, wanting to enjoy coffee himself, cleverly decided to baptize it.

Thus, coffee became the first and only beverage to ever receive baptism.

“It’s secretly quite tasty, you should try it.”

Encouraged by this, we entered Dunkin Donuts to order coffee and donuts.

Since it was cold, I ordered a hot americano.

“How is it?”

“It seems worthy of baptism.”

Her saintly joke made me smile as I brought up something I had been holding back.

“Joan, you probably won’t be able to return home.”

“…I had that feeling.”

“Aren’t you sad?”

“Would going back just lead me to the stake again?”

Though said jokingly, it seemed Joan was aware.

That France had abandoned her.

Even knowing this truth, the young girl accepted reality with composure.

As if shedding her burden as a saint felt liberating.

“Mr. Sejun, what are those things people carry in their hands?”

“Those are smartphones. You can communicate with everyone around the world with them.”

“Like letters?”

“Similar, but with many more functions. You can even see each other’s faces while talking.”

“Incredible.”

She was trying hard to adapt to this new world from the first day.

Curious about everything, Joan kept asking questions which I answered as thoroughly as possible.

Among these, she was most astonished by the development of science.

“Are you saying humans can even travel to the moon?”

“Not just the moon. We’re exploring the sun and other stars too.”

“The sun…”

Joan, biting into a donut, looked adorable with her violet eyes wide open like a rabbit.

“There are airplanes that fly in the sky too.”

“Will they not fall?”

“They sometimes crash, but mostly they’re safe.”

I couldn’t stop talking about Earth’s civilization, even though Joan hadn’t specifically asked.

Her amazed reactions strangely made me more talkative.

I guess you could say it was entertaining to watch.

Considering even modern people are amazed by a world where AI replaces humans…

From the perspective of 15th century Europe, modern civilization must seem like stories from another world.

Afterward, I continued introducing various aspects of modern life to Joan.

We rode public transportation, visited aquariums, and toured COEX.

Before we knew it, the daytime streets had turned into evening.

“Do you want to visit anywhere else?”

Places like movie theaters or Gangnam station’s skyscrapers. There were still many places I hadn’t shown her.

Modern times overflow with attractions.

However…

“I’d like to visit a place where history is recorded.”

Joan wanted to see not modern civilization, but records of past history.

She likely wanted to see her own related history.

“Then we should visit a library.”

I took Joan to the large library at COEX.

Since Joan d’Arc was such a famous figure, records about her were easily accessible.

“…”

Joan quietly read about the history after her death.

Her expression wasn’t particularly bright.

It wasn’t something one could sugarcoat regarding the fates of those connected to her.

Gilles de Rais, her closest knight, went mad after her execution and delved into black magic. Her supporter and comrade, the Duke of Alençon, had his territory confiscated and was sentenced to death, dying in prison.

The rest of their lives were similarly tragic.

“So it ended up like this.”

As I watched Joan carefully review history, I asked:

“Would you like to visit France?”

“I’m curious, but it’s fine.”

Joan closed the history book and returned it to the shelf, as if concluding her role there.

Then she turned to me and smiled brightly.

“For now, as long as I can help Mr. Sejun, that’s enough.”

*

As the sun set and we returned to the shop, Joan suddenly turned into light and disappeared.

Thud─

The plastic bag she had been carrying fell helplessly to the floor.

And a status window appeared.

[Joan of Arc’s time in this world has ended.]

[Recall time: 02:00]

“…”

Just as artifacts from another world cannot be maintained indefinitely in the real world, the same applied to Joan.

Having been expelled from her own world, Joan was an existence that belonged nowhere.

Can this truly be called ‘salvation’?

[The Connector’s power increasing will reduce recall time.]

Hmm.

“I need to get stronger.”

Reduce 2 hours to 1 hour.

Reduce 1 hour to 30 minutes.

Reduce 30 minutes to 1 minute, then 1 second, until it disappears completely…

A goal has formed.

And as if knowing this already…
