Chapter 15: Chapter 15
Hye-ja asked the visitors to wait outside, giving her a chance to talk to Ju-Hoon privately as she packed his clothes. Ju-Hoon and Masika shared a tearful goodbye, clinging to each other as Masika begged him not to leave.
Ju-Hoon reassured her that he would return after studying and working hard to build a better life for them. He promised to protect her and their grandmother, and to come back to her no matter what.
As a symbol of their promise, Ju-Hoon fashioned two rings from a plastic straw and gave one to Masika, keeping the other for himself. "Keep yours safe, and I'll keep mine safe too," he said. "Wait for me, and protect the village and Halmoni until I come back."
Hye-ja, trying to hold back her tears, walked Ju-Hoon to the visitors and bid him farewell. The villagers, who had gathered to see him off, were sad to see Ju-Hoon leave.
After Ju-Hoon's departure, Masika was heartbroken, refusing to eat or stop crying. Hye-ja, shedding tears of her own, comforted Masika, and eventually, they both stopped crying, not wanting to sadden each other further.
Months passed, and Masika became the joy of the elderly villagers, who taught her many things. Meanwhile, Ju-Hoon was settling into his new life in America, attending school for the first time and learning the basics.
To his surprise, the family that had taken him in, the owners of J&K Group of Companies, were wealthy and childless. They decided to adopt Ju-Hoon as their heir, and he began to learn about the family business.
The family's wealth and success were built on the foundations laid by Ju-Hoon's father's friend, who had expanded the business into various industries, including beverages, food, shoes, phones, advertising, schools, and hospitals.
As Ju-Hoon settled into his new life, he couldn't stop thinking about the people he had left behind. But his new family cherished him, and he began to feel at home.
They announced to the public that Ju-Hoon was the heir to the J&K Group of Companies, and he began his journey to become a successful businessman.
