Chapter 273: Chapter 273: Dead Men Don't Cause Trouble
"The first option is simple and final—no loose ends to worry about in the future. The second option, however, will earn you M's gratitude and the favor of everyone in MI6, making it easier for you to take control in the future. The choice is yours." William left the decision to Gareth, not wanting to be blamed later, knowing that Gareth's prolonged silence already revealed his stance.
At precisely 2 PM, the hearing began on time. William, having listened to the initial empty rhetoric, received an update from Sunday: Silva had bombed the London Underground, trapping Bond in the sewers. Silva was estimated to arrive at the hearing in just seven or eight minutes.
William felt a surge of excitement, smiling as he reminded Gareth, "Buddy, Silva will be here in a few minutes. If you've changed your mind and want to save her, there's still time."
As the seconds ticked by with no response from Gareth, William grew impatient, mentally urging for a simple "no" or "yes." Finally, he heard Gareth's weary voice in his earpiece, "I have children."
"Understood."
William could sympathize with Gareth's choice. If it were him, even knowing the benefits of saving M, he wouldn't risk getting shot in the head to save her.
Ending the call with Gareth, William instructed Sunday, "Inform Blair Mills in Switzerland to start the short-selling plan. In an hour, I want news about Davis acquiring blood diamonds from Africa all over the internet. By tomorrow morning, I want to see reports of mass protests at Davis's headquarters."
"Understood, SIR. The instructions have been issued," Sunday responded. A few seconds later, "SIR, Mr. Mills has replied; he will act according to plan."
"Excellent," William allowed himself a slight smirk.
Despite his inner joy, William maintained a composed expression. After all, this was a hearing, and many people, including Catherine Davis on the stage and others around him, were keeping an eye on him. To avoid suspicion, he feigned sleepiness.
A few minutes later, several people around William and behind him noticed that he appeared to be dozing off, which made them chuckle inwardly. Some even felt a pang of envy—only someone as wealthy as William could afford to doze off during a speech by the Home Secretary, Catherine Davis.
On the stage, Catherine Davis was reaching the peak of her speech when she suddenly heard snoring. Annoyed, she glanced around and quickly spotted William. The snore brought the room to a standstill, with those who had noticed him stifling their laughter as they watched William nod off, his head tilting lower and lower until he almost fell out of his chair, which caused the room to erupt in laughter.
Feigning sleep, William pretended to be startled awake by the laughter. Embarrassed, he rubbed his forehead, all the while listening to Sunday's continuous updates on Silva's movements. Inwardly, he thought, "Laugh all you want now; soon you won't be laughing."
The laughter covered up the sound of gunfire outside the meeting room. About ten seconds later, just as everyone had settled down, the doors to the room were violently thrown open.
Everyone turned to see three men in police uniforms enter with guns drawn. As soon as they stepped in, they opened fire on the guards, "Bang, bang, bang!" Within seconds, the guards were down, having barely had time to draw their weapons.
The sudden gunfire sent everyone in the room diving under their seats in panic, while William dashed to the side door, taking cover behind it to observe quietly.
After taking out all the guards, Silva pointed his gun at the terrified M, a broad smile spreading across his face. "We meet again, my dear grandmother."
Seeing the fear on M's face, Silva felt a rush of satisfaction. He had imagined and dreamed of this scene countless times over the past three years. But now that the moment had arrived, he hesitated, his smile slowly turning into a grimace. He snarled, "It's time for you to repent for your sins."
Silva's men, seeing their boss hesitate, anxiously reminded him, "Hurry up, boss, we don't have much time!"
After a few seconds, when Silva still hadn't fired, a voice in the back of the two men's minds kept repeating, "No time! The police are coming! The police are coming!" Exchanging a glance, they turned their guns on M and fired, "Bang, bang!"
The gunshots silenced the room. Silva stood frozen in place, staring at M as she clutched her chest, wide-eyed and speechless.
"Let's go, boss! Let's go! The police are almost here!" The two gunmen shouted at Silva, snapping him out of his daze. He sighed, turned, and began to walk away.
William, who had been waiting, suddenly rushed out from behind the side door, ran to one of the downed guards, grabbed his gun, checked the bullets, and took off after them.
Outside the meeting room, William scanned the area with his psychic powers, instantly grasping the situation ahead. But instead of rushing to attack, he carefully followed the tactical procedures, trailing Silva and his men from a distance. This was all for show; he neither wanted to, nor could, take out Silva directly at this moment.
Eliminating Silva outright might raise suspicion about his motives. Watching as Silva and his men quickly exited the building, William ducked behind the doorframe and fired two shots at the henchmen trailing behind Silva.
"Bang, bang!" Both men were hit in the forehead and dropped instantly.
Outside, the mercenaries waiting in the getaway car for Silva immediately pulled out Uzi submachine guns and fired in William's direction. Taking cover behind a marble pillar, William waited until he heard the screech of tires before cautiously peeking out. He saw the car speeding away, then slowly emerged from the building, pretending to carefully assess the situation before emptying the rest of his magazine at the fleeing car.
With Silva gone, William turned back into the building. Before he could reach the hearing room, Gareth appeared and ushered him into an elevator, heading for the top floor.
Entering an office, Catherine Davis, her face ashen, immediately asked, "Did you kill him?"
William shook his head, "I took out two of them, but the third was picked up by someone outside. Sorry, but their firepower was too strong. I couldn't handle all of them alone."
"F***! Damn it!" Catherine Davis cursed loudly, unbothered by her outburst. If this situation wasn't handled properly, it would spell serious trouble for her. Today's hearing had been her idea and her responsibility, and yet the head of MI6 had been assassinated in front of everyone.
The mere thought of the phone call she would soon receive from the Prime Minister made Catherine's scalp tingle. She stood silently by the window, her fears confirmed when her phone rang a few minutes later.
Covering her forehead, Catherine stared at the caller ID for a few seconds before reluctantly answering.
William and Gareth exchanged glances, with William giving Gareth a reassuring nod before moving to sit on the sofa without a word.
Seeing this, Gareth could only remain standing, too nervous to sit as William did. He stood motionless, waiting for Catherine to finish her call.
After ten minutes, Catherine, her face now livid, approached Gareth and hissed, "One day. You have one day to bring me the mastermind, dead or alive. If you don't, I'll take down every noble in my jurisdiction before I'm forced to resign. You brought this on yourselves."
Gareth, feeling a wave of anxiety, nodded quickly. "Understood. I'll ensure Silva is captured alive."
"NO, I want him dead. Dead men don't talk. Dead men don't cause trouble. Understand?"
