Chapter 4: Saito is Immortal
Yamabuki Ditang's expression was as if he had seen a ghost. "Old man, are you serious?"
Yamamoto sat upright, showing no intention of joking at all. Saito looked at Yamabuki Ditang with interest.
"Will this bean sprout be enough?"
"Humph, how do you know it's bean sprouts if you haven't tried it?" Yamabuki Ditang was unhappy when he heard it. Aren't you insulting me? What man can stand being called a bean sprout?
Saito didn't understand what he meant. The expressions on Shihouin Chihiro and Yamamoto's faces turned subtle. This kid actually dared to make such a bold retort here?
Yamamoto coughed lightly and pulled out a stick of incense from his clothes. "Since you think you are much stronger than this guy, then the limit is one stick of incense. If you can't beat him within one stick of incense, then you should join our Gotei 13 obediently."
Saito's eyes lit up at the challenge. "What if I beat him within one incense stick?"
"I'll give this boy to you as a slave," Yamamoto replied nonchalantly.
"Huh???" Yamabuki Ditang looked at Yamamoto with horror and disbelief. Did you get my consent?
"Okay!" Saito Furuobushi immediately became excited upon hearing the bet. She stepped on the dining table and grasped the Zanpakutō at her waist. "It won't even take a stick of incense to deal with this kid. I can finish him off in three seconds!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Saito drew her sword instantly, and the dining table and the door were torn apart by the sword light. Fortunately, Yamabuki Ditang had anticipated her attack and drew his sword at the last second. Their blades clashed, and though Yamabuki Ditang managed to block, the overwhelming force behind Saito's strike knocked him out of the hall. He landed lightly on the ground, visibly shaken.
Shihouin Chihiro waved his hand to brush off the dust, then walked out of the hall with Yamamoto, both grinning.
"Saito, you have to work harder. The incense has started burning!" Shihouin Chihiro teased with a smile.
Yamabuki Ditang moved back cautiously, his face pale. There was a huge difference between a vice-captain and a captain—it was like heaven and earth!
When Ichigo the Black Knight rescued Rukia Kuchiki, he had just reached captain-level strength but could instantly defeat three vice-captains on the execution platform. Similarly, Abarai Renji, even with his Bankai, was no match for Kuchiki Byakuya. The gap was undeniable.
"How could I possibly stop her for even a stick of incense?" Yamabuki Ditang thought. The old man has surely sent me to my grave! I regret joining the Gotei 13. Is it too late to quit now?
But Saito didn't give him time to think. She rushed forward with overwhelming speed and power. Yamabuki Ditang barely dodged with a Flash Step as her blade struck the ground, creating an explosion that sent rubble flying everywhere.
"Is this even human?" Yamabuki Ditang thought, sweat pouring down his face. Besides his vice-captain-level spiritual pressure, the only skills he had were basic swordsmanship and Flash Step. But as everyone knew, the effectiveness of any skill in Soul Society was tied to spiritual pressure. Without sufficient strength, even the most basic skills were useless.
Saito charged again, her blade glinting with deadly precision. Yamabuki Ditang panicked and shouted at Yamamoto and Shihouin Chihiro: "Does anyone here know any ghost arts? Teach me on the spot!"
Shihouin Chihiro nearly burst out laughing. "Sharpening your spear before battle is fine, but isn't it a little late now?"
Yamamoto remained calm. "What do you want to learn? I'm quite proficient in ghost arts."
Yamabuki Ditang quickly ran through the list of known ghost techniques in his mind, but before he could decide, Saito closed the distance again. He could only meet her attack head-on. Their blades collided once more, and Yamabuki Ditang was sent flying. Miraculously, he landed unscathed. But before he could catch his breath, Saito was already rushing at him again.
"You're jumping around like a monkey! Can't you face me like a man?" Saito yelled angrily.
Yamabuki Ditang dodged her strikes while shouting again: "Does anyone know the Red Smoke Escape? Teach me quickly!"
"Do you think learning a low-level ghost technique will help you defeat me?" Saito sneered.
"How about you wait until I finish learning it first?"
"I'm not falling for that! Die!"
Yamamoto stretched his arms and said, "I'll only show you once, so watch closely."
"Watch closely? Are you serious? If I take my eyes off her for even a second, I'll be cut in half!" Yamabuki Ditang thought in despair. "Can't you teach me properly?"
"The twenty-first method of binding, Red Smoke Escape!" Yamamoto demonstrated, and a red smoke rose from under his feet, enveloping the area. This low-level binding spell was primarily used to obscure vision and had no offensive capability.
Yamabuki Ditang could barely spare a glance at the demonstration while evading Saito's relentless attacks. But as he watched, something strange happened. He suddenly understood the technique's principle as if it had been ingrained in his mind.
"What's going on?" Yamabuki Ditang wondered, then recalled the title the system had given him: the Child of Destiny.
Unlimited talent. Unlimited growth. Unlimited potential. That was the essence of being the Child of Destiny.
"The twenty-first of the Binding Techniques, Red Smoke Escape!" Yamabuki Ditang shouted, pressing one hand to the ground. A thick red smoke rose, obscuring everyone's vision.
Yamamoto and Shihouin Chihiro, observing from a distance, were stunned.
"Has this kid ever studied ghost arts before?" Shihouin Chihiro asked.
"Probably not. Otherwise, he would have used it earlier," Yamamoto replied, his tone serious.
A person who had never studied ghost arts managed to replicate a spell after seeing it performed once. Though it was a low-level spell, the talent required was terrifying.
"Red Smoke Escape! Red Smoke Escape! Red Smoke Escape!" Yamabuki Ditang unleashed the technique repeatedly, using his vice-captain-level spiritual pressure to fill the battlefield with red smoke. For a moment, the entire area was shrouded in thick mist, and no one could see anything clearly.
Saito grew increasingly frustrated. "Are you going to keep hiding? How long can you run, coward?"
"Hiding? You seem to misunderstand something. I'm just waiting for the right opportunity," Yamabuki Ditang's voice echoed eerily from within the smoke.
Saito's eyes widened in shock as Yamabuki Ditang's voice came from behind her. She spun around in alarm, only to see the glint of his blade rushing toward her face at an impossible speed!
The battle wasn't over, but for the first time, Saito realized this wasn't the easy victory she had expected. Yamabuki Ditang, the supposed "bean sprout," had just turned the tables.
