Chapter 55: Call of Home
Over these months, I missed a lot. The world had changed drastically. People with superpowers started appearing all over the globe, and not all of them were law-abiding. Power intoxicated the mind, and even the strongest could make reckless decisions. Their path led to one thing—disaster. But I cannot protect the entire world. All I can do is gradually influence its changes, and my main priority became Gotham. This city has the highest concentration of criminals. Adding individuals with special abilities to the mix only amplifies the destructive potential of their actions.
I allowed myself a few days to rest with my family. It wasn't much, but it was something. Deciding to train a bit, I realized that I couldn't rely on being a blazing giant without attracting unnecessary attention. So, I found another path—to try using my powers in a new way. I resolved to improve my portal technique, working to control the fire around it and avoid unnecessary flashes.
Opening portals over and over, I trained to command the flames. I am the element itself, and it only took a little effort to move to another place. Even the smallest spark was enough. The fire would ignite, forming a circle that allowed me to step through. The shape of the portal was simple; my mind chose the easiest-to-grasp form and made it real. But it wasn't always necessary to step through a fiery ring. What if?
Fire enveloped my body, and in a small burst of sparks, I teleported a few meters, leaving behind only a faint trace of flame. This was already better.
The next step was to embrace my alternative form. I hadn't had time to fully assess my body. My form began changing rapidly...
Looking at my hands, I felt the world in an entirely new way. The power concentrated in my hands was colossal. But what about my heart? It beat wildly, sending blood rushing through my veins. Anger surged within me. Flames engulfed my body.
"AAAAARRRRRGHHHHHH!"
A roar of fury tore from me. I didn't understand where these emotions came from, emotions that overwhelmed me. The uncontrollable fire burned everything in its path. Summoning all my willpower, I tried to regain control, but something was preventing me from reverting to my human form. Fighting myself was a challenge, but I extinguished the fire, and with it, I managed to return to my human state.
"Something is definitely wrong," I muttered. Where did this anger come from? It felt like some survival instinct had taken over, no matter the cost. For now, everything seemed fine. After that, I lost the desire to continue training and returned to Star City. From there, I boarded a plane to Gotham. Of course, I could've teleported instantly, but someone watches everyone in that city. He would immediately know I'd arrived, but he wouldn't bother me much. However, if I arrived secretly and his people noticed me, the situation would be entirely different.
A few hours later, I landed. After passing through the airport's control checkpoint, I finally found myself home. The same heavy air mixed with smoke from countless factories, the same gloomy atmosphere with constant rain. This is my city—Gotham.
