Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Blisters and Shoes
What is happiness, and how do you find it?
The children didn't know, and Broly wasn't entirely sure either.
But it didn't matter. The direction had been set, and all they had to do was follow it.
Led by Broly, the group followed the path taken by the imperial intelligence agents.
Along the way, they encountered many dangerous beasts, but these creatures weren't a threat because their group had something even more dangerous: a Saiyan.
All the dangerous beasts that attacked were turned into ingredients for the next meal by Broly. Compared to the danger posed by these beasts, the real threats were the snakes and insects hidden under fallen leaves and among the vines, which were harder to guard against.
Fortunately, there were children in the group who had lived in forest environments before. Although the poisonous creatures in the Gifunora Sea Tree Forest were different, the methods for preventing and treating their bites were somewhat similar.
After gathering some slightly toxic plants and lighting them to create smoke, they used branches to wave the smoke ahead, driving away many of the snakes and insects.
"Do we really have to do this?"
Broly coughed from the smoke and asked.
"We have no choice. Unlike you, Broly, we're not immune to snake and insect bites."
Rivalina, who was said to be from a Western tribe and had lived in a mangrove swamp, explained.
This method of driving away snakes, rats, and mosquitoes was something she had come up with after tasting various plants in the forest.
She had experience surviving in forests, but unfortunately, this place was full of dangerous beasts.
If Broly hadn't saved her yesterday, she might have already been eaten by one.
"I have a better idea."
Broly thought for a moment and said.
"What is it?"
The children looked at him curiously.
Broly had Rivalina extinguish the toxic smoke, then raised his hand toward the forest ahead. With a green energy beam, he blasted the forest, creating a clear path.
"This is my solution."
Broly clapped his hands as if he had done something trivial.
The children: "..."
This was a path they had never imagined. The dense forest ahead, filled with giant trees, was now completely obliterated.
Not only were the snakes and insects gone, but even the dangerous beasts that had been there were likely reduced to ash.
The atmosphere grew tense. Nahashu, being one of the older and more experienced children, sensed the unease and quickly started clapping.
"Broly is awesome, Broly is incredible. Everyone, let's applaud Broly and cheer for him. Thank him for clearing such a path for us in the forest."
Power inspires awe, but overwhelming power can also evoke fear. This was a natural human reaction.
However, with Nahashu's timely intervention, the children's instinctive fear gradually turned into greater respect.
"Broly, you're amazing! How did you do that? With just a 'whoosh' and 'bang,' the forest was gone!"
With Akame, Tsukushi, and Bony—girls with thicker nerves—leading the way, the group, mostly composed of simple-minded children, quickly regained their liveliness. Only a few of the older, more experienced children looked at Broly with complex expressions.
"Monster."
Perhaps they didn't say it out loud, but there was a hint of that in their eyes.
There was fear, but they held it back.
Though not perfect, Broly wasn't a particularly observant person.
Amidst the children's constant calls of "Broly," he gradually lost himself.
Of course, you could also say he was enjoying the attention that came with being the center of a group of children his age.
"Just gather energy in your hand, then 'whoosh,' 'bang'~"
Broly demonstrated again, blasting another tree into oblivion.
Throwing energy balls was one of the few things he could share, aside from games like cat's cradle.
"Hmm... still not working."
The children mimicked his movements, trying to imagine what "gathering energy" meant as they aimed at the surrounding trees.
Unsurprisingly, none of them succeeded. This was to be expected, as the children's internal energy wasn't yet abundant enough to be converted into energy balls.
However, this world had dangerous beasts, as well as various unique secret techniques and bio-modification technologies, so it might still be possible for someone to learn how to shoot energy blasts.
After staying in place for a while, the group, having failed to produce energy blasts, set off again. This time, with a clear path ahead, they moved much faster.
The only downside was that Broly's sudden display of power had frightened the creatures of the Gifunora Sea Tree Forest.
The previously noisy forest now seemed eerily quiet near the path Broly had created.
For the rest of the journey, the group didn't encounter any dangerous beasts or bothersome snakes and insects. On the flip side, there were no more easy prey coming to them either.
...
Night fell, and the children set up camp by a stream in the forest.
"It's better to walk through the forest."
Broly sighed. After blasting a path, no prey came to him anymore.
"I don't think so. Walking on flat ground is much easier."
Akame retorted, lifting her small foot to show him.
"At least after walking such a long distance today, I didn't get more blisters on my feet."
As she said this, she took a thin wooden splinter and helped her sister deal with the blisters on her feet.
Broly looked down at his own feet. He had never developed blisters.
But seeing everyone else dealing with theirs, he felt a bit envious.
"How can I get blisters too?"
He asked.
"Huh? Why would you want blisters?"
"Because you all have them."
Akame was speechless.
"They're not something good."
"Yeah, they hurt like hell when you step on them."
Kurome added.
"If I could, I wouldn't want them either."
The other children chimed in.
"Then is there a way to avoid getting them?"
Hearing that they weren't something good, Broly changed his mind and asked.
"Blisters aren't a big deal. Just pop them, rest a bit, and they'll heal."
Cornelia said.
"I think if we had soft shoes, we wouldn't get blisters."
A blonde girl named Natala said.
"The shoes the slave traders gave us are too hard."
"You at least have shoes. The slavers who sold me here didn't even give me any."
The children chattered on.
"I don't wear shoes, but I don't get blisters either."
"Wow, your soles are really thick!"
Listening to them, Broly came to a conclusion: most of them needed a pair of soft shoes.
But how to get such shoes? Broly thought of his father on Planet Vampa, who was skilled at crafting.
He had once made shoes for Broly, but Broly found them too stuffy and never wore them. Still, they were indeed soft, made from the fur of a Baya.
At the thought of this, Broly had an idea. Earlier today, before he had blasted a path through the forest, he had hunted a group of long-haired, soft-furred creatures.
Broly walked over to the corpse of a long-haired deer, pulled off some of its fur, and began weaving it.
However, even after someone had finished preparing the long-haired deer's meat, Broly still hadn't managed to shape the soft fur into anything resembling a shoe.
"What are you doing?" Akame asked, coming over.
"Making shoes," Broly replied.
"Can you really make shoes just out of fur?"
Akame wasn't sure.
"My father made shoes out of fur."
"Really?"
"I didn't bring them with me, otherwise I'd show you. They were so soft!"
Even though he had rarely worn shoes on Planet Vampa, Broly confidently assured the girl.
"Using the same kind of fur as your clothes?"
"Yes."
Akame reached out and touched Broly's Baya fur clothing. It was indeed very soft.
But it wasn't exactly fur—more like some kind of plant fiber.
"Does anyone here know how to make shoes?"
Akame thought for a moment, then asked the other children.
"I do."
One of the children raised his hand.
"My father was a shoemaker. Later, he got into gambling, lost a lot of money, and I was sold off. This kind of handiwork isn't difficult for me."
"Can you weave this fur into shoes?"
"I think so."
The boy who knew how to make shoes nodded after some thought. His hands were much more skilled than Broly's.
He first found some vines, scraped off the bark, and removed the thorns, turning them into simple materials for making shoes.
Twisting and overlapping the vine bark, he quickly shaped it into the form of a sandal.
"I used to make them out of dried grass. That was more durable and softer. I haven't tried vine bark before, but if we add fur, it should make them softer."
As he spoke, he quickly wove the shoes.
By the time the meat was almost done roasting, a crude pair of vine-and-fur sandals had been made by the boy.
Akame tried them on and found them quite comfortable. Aside from being a bit too big, they were far better than the wooden shoes she had been wearing.
"We need more vines and fur to make more shoes."
Broly said.
"I can't make shoes for everyone by myself."
The shoemaker boy shook his head. There were over seventy people here.
"Then let's all make them together. You just need to teach us how to make shoes."
Tsukushi and some other children with nimble fingers chimed in.
The group of children gradually gathered to discuss making shoes.
But before that, they needed to eat.
Tonight's main dishes were long-haired deer and some large, long insects. The roasted deer had a strong flavor, while the roasted insects had a fruity, woody aroma. Their texture was like chewy beef tendon—a bit tough at first, but the more you chewed, the more flavorful they became.
On the exchange page of the Crystal Palace, this dish was called "Haisen Giant Insect Roast," and its exchange price was about the same as a pork cutlet rice bowl.
The soup was fish soup. Some small fish had been caught from the forest stream and cooked in the swamp crab shell from yesterday.
The fish didn't have a name, but even without salt, the soup was incredibly flavorful.
While cooking the soup, Bony suggested adding mushrooms to give it some color, but the idea was unanimously rejected.
