Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 306 - B City Base

Most of the soldiers at the base had seen Lin Kexin during the early days of the apocalypse, but she had rarely appeared in public afterward. However, many had heard rumors about her and Song Changlong, which made them quite curious about her.

Miss Lin, the eldest daughter of the Lin family, didn’t look much like her brother. Lin Ruihai was tall, slightly handsome, with a youthful, sunny demeanor.

On the other hand, Miss Lin appeared fragile and delicate. One could tell she wasn’t in good health, and indeed, she wasn’t. The fact that she had survived was considered a miracle by everyone. But her beauty was unforgettable, which led the young soldiers present to steal glances at her.

“I heard the eldest daughter and Captain Song are a couple.”

“Not necessarily. Their families were neighbors before. They might be siblings.”

“From their appearance, they really don’t seem to match. Captain Song is tall and strong, while the eldest daughter is too fragile. She doesn’t seem suited to be with a soldier like him.”

“What world are you living in? Why still look at people like that? If Captain Song likes her, then that’s all that matters.”

“With her frail condition, if it weren’t for her good luck and the protection she has, she’d probably be dead in an hour…”

The soldiers were gossiping from a distance, unaware that Lin Kexin was listening to every word.

After completing a segment of training, Lin Ruihai sat down to rest beside Lin Kexin.

“Big Brother, I want to join the military and go on missions with you in the future,” Lin Kexin said.

Upon hearing this, Lin Ruihai sat up straight, concern evident in his eyes as he looked at her. “You want to join the military? That’s fine, but your health is too fragile. Going on missions would be too much of a burden for you.”

“I’m fine now. My health has fully recovered, and I often use my mind rather than physical strength,” Lin Kexin replied.

Lin Ruihai’s face showed a mix of joy and sadness as he murmured, “This is good.”

Lin Kexin understood why Lin Ruihai had such complex emotions.

They had both experienced the apocalypse together, and they knew each other’s personalities well. Lin Kexin understood that although Lin Ruihai felt sorrowful, he did not blame her.

However, fate plays tricks on people, and the feeling of unsatisfaction remained.

The two siblings silently sat in the same place for a long while. Finally, Lin Ruihai managed to suppress his sadness and said to Lin Kexin, “If you also like Song Changlong, then let go of your reservations and accept him. Both Mom and Dad and I hope that you’ll be happy. People must look forward.”

Lin Kexin remained silent for a long time, yet never responded to Lin Ruihai’s words. Her heart was still adrift, unable to find a point of grounding. How could she accept a man into her life when she herself couldn’t settle her feelings?

Lin Kexin didn’t answer, and Lin Ruihai didn’t push her. After all, this matter wasn’t urgent, and he had only said it to express his stance.

After catching his breath during the short rest, Lin Ruihai went back to training. In this world, nothing gave more security than a strong combat ability.

The body-enhancing technique he and Song Changlong were practicing now had been given to them by his sister, and its impact on their physical fitness was very noticeable. Additionally, since he himself was a power-type ability user, he was able to become the official top fighter at B City’s base.

Song Changlong, as a speed-type ability user, benefitted even more from the body-enhancing technique, but his combat power was still not as strong as Lin Ruihai’s for the time being.

In the future, as Song Changlong continues to practice, he will not only have immense combat strength but also incredible speed. Lin Ruihai may not be able to surpass him in strength.

Ruo Manni and the others had set off for B City’s base early this morning. Today, she sat by the window, watching the road conditions outside. Her gaze was distant, as if she was lost in thought.

Due to the involvement of Hebrew Adam, Hua Deli had barely had a chance to speak to his sister. However, that didn’t mean he didn’t notice Ruo Manni’s unusual behavior.

Seeing her so unsettled today, Hua Deli intentionally sat beside her and quietly asked if something was bothering her.

Ruo Manni vaguely responded, her emotions mixed as she looked at her concerned “brother.” She couldn’t help but wonder, how would he feel if he knew that she wasn’t his real sister?

In her previous life, Ruo Manni had grown up in B City, so she was extremely familiar with it, even the roads leading to the city.

Although the earthquake during the apocalypse had severely damaged the roads, with the vegetation on both sides growing wildly and covering many of the obvious features, she was still able to recognize them.

Before they got close to B City, they suddenly encountered a convoy heading toward them.

Nowadays, it was rare to find a convoy with vehicles and fuel, and along the way, they had only encountered two or three groups.

So, when Ruo Manni noticed the convoy, she curiously looked at the lead vehicle.

She saw a middle-aged man sitting in the front passenger seat, his face dark with curses: “Didn’t they say Song Changlong wouldn’t survive? Yet here he is, coming back just fine.”

A young man in the back seat of the car also had an unpleasant expression on his face. “The prediction dreams from the Commander’s wife have never been wrong. What’s going on this time? Why did it fail… Deputy Commander Zhang, what should we do next?”

“What else can we do? We continue on, and we’ll head back in the afternoon. Turning around now would just make it obvious to others what we came out here for,” Deputy Commander Zhang in the passenger seat grunted.

The two convoys passed each other.

“Wow! Song Changlong and his team got such a nice RV! Why didn’t the fourth-tier mutant snake just take their lives?”

Ruo Manni narrowed her eyes. A prediction dream?

These people were out here this morning looking to take advantage because someone had a “prediction dream” about Song Changlong dying at the hands of a fourth-tier mutant snake.

Soon, the familiar yet strange buildings of B City appeared before Ruo Manni. She temporarily pushed the matter aside and focused intently on a landmark building—an industrial building over thirty stories high.

Under the sunlight, this industrial building from the current world looked similar to the ones she saw when she returned to B City during her studies in her previous life.

Ruo Manni couldn’t help herself and took several scenic photos with her lightbrain. The city was now completely abandoned, and even if she could stay in this world for fifty years, she wasn’t sure how long this scene would last.

The convoy did not enter the city; it headed directly in the opposite direction, leaving the abandoned B City behind them.

Perhaps because they were near a survivor base, their convoy did not encounter any zombies near B City. The road here was clearly cleared and relatively smooth, allowing them to increase their speed.

Ruo Manni observed the way the vehicles were moving and realized that in this world, the B City Military Training Base was also about ten kilometers away from B City. The B City Survivor Base was likely established within the military training base.

In her previous life, Ruo Manni had visited this place many times, but not because Lin Ruihai worked here as an instructor. It was because there was a Lishan Resort here.

In her previous life, when her health deteriorated, her parents had taken her to stay at this resort for more than two months. She wondered if Lin Kexin from this world had also once recuperated at Lishan Resort.

As the car neared Lishan, Ruo Manni could see from a distance that the area of the B City Survivor Base was much larger than she had imagined.
