Chapter 512: Full of ideas
«Will Scarlet be the Alpha?» Jaden asked.
«I don't know.» There it was, first time. Nate knew less than he wanted to admit, but he couldn't lie to his son about it.
«But Scarlet is Alpha and I am not.»
«Who said so?» Read exclusive content at empire
Jaden shrugged. He wasn't sure who said it, but he wasn't like his sister. She would get everyone do what she wanted, and that was Alpha's job.
Also, there was something else that made him think that way.
«Scarlet resembles aunty Sam, and aunty is an Alpha.»
«That's right,» Nate confirmed.
«But I don't resemble aunty.»
«Oh, but you resemble me. I was like you when I was little.»
«Really?»
«Yes. Don't you believe me anymore?»
«But... Oh, grandma said so once. She said also that I'll become like you when I grow up. Does it mean I'll become the Alpha?»
«Maybe,» Nate said. «I don't know what will happen in the future. But you will always be my son, and that will never change. All I'm asking is that you don't forget that Scarlet is your family. And I'll ask this of her too.»
«I can't imagine Scarlet doing your job, dad.»
Nate couldn't stop himself and kissed Jaden's head. That son of his was a little too precocious. He would understand things even adults struggled with, and he would accept the situation he was in with calm.
He was just as Alpha as Scarlet, just that he didn't show it around. And, with time, he would learn how to be a leader without forcing his power on anyone.
«You resemble your grandpa. Not Luther, the other one. My father. He also didn't force people to follow him. He was so calm that one wouldn't think he was the Alpha of a big pack like Norwich,» Nate said.
Jaden blinked a couple of times, thinking hard about something. In the end, he told Nate about his most inner doubt.
«Do you think Stella will be happy if I am like this?»
Nate's heart skipped a beat, his lungs filled with happiness. Every trouble his pups would make was worth those fleeting moments, when they would make him proud. Or just laugh.
«I think she'll like you either way. She likes you now, doesn't she?»
«It seems so. She remembers my name!»
«If she likes you now, she'll like the person you'll become by following your path, Jaden. You're special the way you are, and you don't need to resemble anyone. You can find your own way to live your life. And maybe even of being an Alpha, if that is your destiny.»
«But what if I'm not? What will happen?»
«You'll be happy that way too,» Nate said. «You'll build your family, career, and everything you'd like.»
«Will Scarlet send me away?»
«No, why? She wouldn't want that!»
«But she's... She isn't happy about Stella.»
«Your sister is just jealous that she's not the only girl in your heart anymore. But she'll find her mate, one day, and she won't have time to bother you.»
«I hope so!» Jaden said. «I don't want her to hurt Stella.»
«She won't.»
Nate didn't add anything else. Something in his heart told him that Jaden would become the next Alpha of the pack. It was just about instinct, and he couldn't say it out loud because he had no proof. Not even a clue about what would happen.
So, he had to stay open-minded and expect any outcome.
«If I become the Alpha, can I stop Scarlet from hurting Stella?»
«Of course. But she won't dare do anything to your mate if you become Alpha.»
«Cool,» Jaden whispered, as low as if to hide it from Nate. His face, however, was transparent like water.
«I don't want you two to fight over it,» Nate said. «You're brother and sister. There is nothing worse than siblings fighting over power.»
«We will be good, dad,» Jaden said, chuckling. He hugged Nate before continuing. «I won't hurt Scarlet.»
His expression told Nate that his son wasn't giving up. Just, he wouldn't use violence. He had a working brain, after all.
«We were talking about grandpa Luther,» Nate said, moving to the previous topic. He wanted to find out more about it.
«He's good, dad. He also said he'll tell us how mommy was when she was little.»
«Now that I think about it, he saw her last when she was about your age.»
His worries disappeared when the chance to know Lara's childhood adventures appeared in front of his eyes. He was sure she was cute and loving, just like Jaden.
Also, with her warm eyes, she must have also been adorable. He wanted to hear about her first steps, how she would be dressed and what her interests were. What kind of toys did she like?
He wanted to know every detail!
«What about your uncle, then?» he continued, letting poor Luther rest. He couldn't interrogate his son about that man. Not before finding out everything about Lara. Suspicions would still be there for later.
«He's fine,» Jaden said, nodding his head. «He also taught me how to be a man my mate will like.»
«Yes? And how is that?»
What had that wicked man taught to his son? Was Jaden going to become a bad boy to impress Stella or something?
«He said to look powerless,» Jaden said. «So that she feels pity and gives me caresses.»
«Oh, that. Listen, your uncle isn't a man you should trust...»
«And to let her be right sometimes. Also, to cook for her. She-wolves can't resist cooking skills.»
«I see... Well, maybe. Wait, cooking?»
Nate narrowed his eyes, confused. He had always loved Lara's cooking, that was right. It was so tasty that he had never considered to make anything for her.
True that she wasn't a she-wolf either, but... Did he need to provide more food?
«Do you think...» he started, but Jaden shook his head.
«No,» he said, short.
«No, what?»»
«Mommy wouldn't like it. She's special.»
«Oh, right,» Nate sighed.
«My mommy can't be won that easily.»
«Correct.»
«But you can bring lots of food she will cook for us.»
Nate nodded, again. That son of his was full of great ideas.
