Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Joining CTU?

Owen knocked on the door to the chief's office.

"Come in," said a voice from inside.

Pushing the door open, Owen stepped in. "Chief, you wanted to see me? Oh, George... you're here too?"

To Owen's surprise, Detective George "Old Man" was also present, though his expression didn't look good. A quick glance between him and Chief Haviland told Owen the two had likely just been arguing. This wasn't unusual—everyone at the station knew the chief and George had a unique relationship. They had been partners in their younger days and were still close, though that often meant heated disagreements. George was one of the few people who could openly clash with Haviland without consequence.

George gave Owen a reassuring pat on the shoulder before walking out, leaving him puzzled.

"Officer Owen, good to see you," Chief Haviland greeted him with a smile. He gestured for Owen to sit down. "I wanted to inform you that CTU's investigation into you has officially concluded. You're in the clear—there's no evidence of any wrongdoing."

Owen nodded but didn't respond. He could tell there was more to come and waited for the chief to continue.

Haviland, noticing Owen's silence, appeared momentarily awkward before clearing his throat and sliding a check across the desk.

"Additionally, in recognition of your bravery during last night's operation, the department is awarding you a bonus. Of course, you'll have to pay taxes on it," Haviland said with a chuckle.

Owen glanced at the check—$20,000. He raised an eyebrow in surprise. That was nearly three months' salary for him. He couldn't remember the department ever being this generous.

"We'd also appreciate it if you could keep certain details of the operation confidential," the chief added. "Some of the events that transpired could reflect poorly on the department."

Ah, so that's what this is about, Owen thought. He asked, "Does McClane also get a... reward like this?"

"Of course. We've already sent someone to deliver it, with the same request for discretion."

Owen understood perfectly now—this was hush money. Last night's operation had its share of failures, and much of the blame could be placed on Haviland's leadership. However, with CTU stepping in and taking over, they had absorbed much of the fallout. Since no one was pressing the issue, Haviland was eager to ensure that neither Owen nor McClane would stir up trouble.

"Understood, Chief. I won't disclose any details to the media or anyone else," Owen replied as he pocketed the check. He had no interest in talking to reporters anyway. This unexpected bonus would be useful—he could treat his mom and Amanda to something nice.

Relieved that Owen was on board, Haviland brightened. He then handed Owen another piece of paper.

"This came from CTU," he said.

Curious, Owen picked up the document. It was an official offer letter from CTU's Los Angeles division, inviting him to join their operations department. At the bottom was Jack Bauer's signature.

"CTU wants to recruit me?" Owen asked, surprised.

The chief nodded. "Yes. Jack Bauer was very impressed with how you handled yourself during the crisis. Despite their investigation, it turns out they've had their eye on you. The investigation was just a formality."

"Of course, you're not obligated to accept. However, I think this is a great opportunity. CTU is offering double your current salary and substantial bonuses for successful missions. Having experience with CTU on your record would also benefit your career in law enforcement."

Haviland paused, feeling a bit embarrassed. It wasn't every day that a police chief found himself encouraging one of his officers to leave for another agency. He knew George had argued with him earlier because of this. Still, Haviland was under pressure. CTU had taken a significant risk by stepping in during the hostage crisis, essentially shielding Haviland from further scrutiny. This offer was a way of showing gratitude.

Owen was both stunned and flattered. Jack Bauer himself had personally requested him. That name carried weight—Bauer was a legend in the field.

Owen's initial hesitation came from his loyalty to the department. He had close bonds with George and his fellow detectives in the Major Crimes Unit. George was like a father figure, and the team felt more like a family than just colleagues. Leaving them wasn't an easy decision.

Haviland, sensing his hesitation, added, "Don't worry about George. He supports your career and won't stand in your way. He's proud of you, but of course, he's also a bit reluctant to see you go."

The chief's words made sense, but Owen still wanted to hear George's thoughts directly. "Chief, this is all a bit sudden. Could I have some time to think it over?"

"Of course. Take all the time you need. Just know that I believe this is a great opportunity for you."

After leaving the chief's office, Owen returned to the Major Crimes Unit, where he was immediately met with playful teasing.

"Hey, look—it's the one-man SWAT team!"

"L.A.'s very own action hero!"

"Hey, Owen, can I put your face on a poster to attract some new clients?" joked Detective Jack, grinning mischievously.

Owen laughed, exchanging banter with his colleagues. The atmosphere was warm and familiar, as always. After a few more jokes, he made his way to George's office.

George seemed to have anticipated his visit. Before Owen could speak, George said, "You don't need to ask for my opinion, Steve. CTU is a solid opportunity, but the decision is yours to make.

"No matter what you choose, we're still friends, right? But I do want you to think about your family. CTU's work is far more dangerous than what we do here. Your mother and sister might struggle with the risks and long absences. As you probably know, CTU isn't limited to just L.A.—they oversee operations across the entire West Coast. You'll be on the move a lot."

George's words were thoughtful and practical. He wasn't wrong—joining CTU would mean sacrificing time with his family and possibly exposing them to danger.

Owen nodded slowly. "Thanks, George. You've given me a lot to think about. I'll talk it over with my family before making a decision."

George smiled. "That's the right approach. Whatever you choose, we'll support you."
