Cyberpunk: Becoming a Legend from Dogtown

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Shooting at Rebecca

The walls of Dogtown were not easy to breach.

Whether it was the water-filled underground manholes or the secretly dug tunnels, they had all been traversed by "criminals" trying to evade the NCPD and corporations.

The accessible paths were either filled with underwater mines or littered with Militech landmines that had been thrown into the river over a decade ago and still exploded with a deafening roar.

No one had ever complained about Dogtown's towering walls, and whatever Militech had done underground in Dogtown, the walls were undeniably solid.

However, Dorio's efforts paid off. The four of them managed to enter Dogtown for 1,000 euros, hitching a ride on a truck carrying construction waste.

As for Sasha, she stayed in her little nest in Japantown, providing guidance for the team while engaging in a cyber battle with the opposing hacker.

"That's it. Once the job is done, get out quickly through the opening over there. You'll only have thirty minutes after the gunfire starts."

The fixer who sold them the "tickets" opened the back of the construction waste truck, set the time, and left.

Rebecca was annoyed. "Thirty minutes? What if that slippery guy runs away? Ugh."

At that moment, their phones all displayed Sasha's adorable cyber cat avatar. Sasha was adjusting her equipment on the other end, seemingly taking a deep breath.

Maine frowned slightly. As the leader of the squad, what worried him most was this child who never expressed her emotions.

"Having trouble, Sasha?"

Sasha shook her head. "It's just that the opposing hacker is quite skilled. Once I get the Umbra Hounds' data, you guys deal with the trouble and get out."

"Stay safe."

They reminded each other, waiting for the rickety vehicle to take them into the lair of the warlord, Hanson.

Rebecca sighed heavily, her pink and yellow cybernetic eyes blinking.

For some reason, she felt like something was going to happen today. She, who was usually carefree, loved to empty her bullets during firefights and chat with her squadmates before a job.

Dorio patted her on the shoulder.

"Don't worry. We're just here to clean up our team's mess."

"Smile."

This strong woman, with her short golden hair, always carried an air of restrained charm.

She was tough—her punches could explode sandbags, and with slightly less force, they often landed on Maine's face whenever he tried to make a move on her.

Maine liked her, and she would always silently cover for him during missions, knowing he loved to take risks.

In short, she was a cool woman, perfect for a romantic partner.

Maine twisted the exposed rebar from the cement block beside him, his hand casually resting on Dorio's shoulder. Rebecca could clearly feel Dorio's hand on her shoulder grow heavier.

"I think after this job, we should go have some fun. What do you say…"

As he spoke, Maine's hand started acting up again. He loved to get handsy with Dorio while talking.

Bang!

His sunglasses were askew, and blood slowly trickled from his nose.

Rebecca's eyes were filled with two words: Showtime.

The atmosphere in the truck finally relaxed. Rebecca pulled out shotgun shells from her waist, tossing them in the air before smoothly loading them into her large gun.

Because they were entering Dogtown, she couldn't bring her pistol. After much deliberation, Maine had given her a shotgun with decent firepower.

She could play with bullets like a pro, her small hands deftly handling multiple rounds at once.

She loved the weighty feel of a gun in her hands. With her green hair tied into twin tails, she was often mistaken for a little girl who had run away from home.

Pilar was the most annoyed among them. His new "experiment" was only halfway done, but the team's clean-up jobs required everyone's participation, especially since it involved his sister.

As the truck came to a halt, they quietly waited for the door to be opened.

An Umbra Hound opened the door and saw the burly Maine, the equally muscular woman with a stern expression, a loli, and a guy with long arms.

He swallowed and walked away.

"Let's go, everyone!"

The setting sun dyed Dogtown's sky a bloody red, the light slowly sliding toward the west.

[Incoming Call: Hamster]

"Hey, if you can hear me, just say something."

Lin Yue nodded. "Got it."

"Shut up then. Find a good spot. Hearing your voice pisses me off!"

Lin Yue, carrying his rifle, found a relatively good position on the abandoned building where Hamster was holed up. He ignored the curses in his ear.

He even wanted to lean into Hamster's ear and say, Your chip works great.

Through the scope of the Tsumugi sniper rifle, the motel was bathed in a faint green glow. This scope could highlight anyone the laser swept near, and all other moving living beings could be accurately identified.

Lin Yue followed the procedure to check the rifle's indicators. After just half a day of simulation, this former Umbra Hound soldier was ready to operate as a sniper.

"Big guy, it's all on you."

The cybernetic sensors in Lin Yue's hands had already uploaded the gun's data to his cybernetic eye. The rifle surprised him again—it could be equipped with additional modules.

This big gun might become his most powerful weapon in the days to come.

Night fell.

The residents of Dogtown's back hills burned garbage as bonfires, sitting on torn sofas, drinking ice-cold beer in small groups.

Kidney harvesters rode motorcycles, gathering in the streets, either looking for new jobs or picking their next victim.

When they weren't short on cash, they didn't bother with people without cyberware, preferring to target corporate suits and cyberpsychos.

In the distance, the green laser from the tip of Mr. Hands' Heavy Hearts pyramid pierced the night sky, and a crescent moon appeared.

In 2075, the lunar port should have been completed, right?

Lin Yue also wanted to spend 250,000 euros to take a trip to space and see the moon.

Just as Lin Yue was lost in thought, Hamster's voice came through his ear. "They're here. The other side is starting to steal the data."

"I don't know what that old fox Mr. Hands told you, but in my book, the data automatically uploads at the twenty-minute mark. You better defend properly."

Lin Yue lay on the rooftop, his hand gently resting on the trigger.

"My location's been compromised. Stay sharp!"

Hamster's voice grew heavier, and Lin Yue felt the invisible pressure. With Zetatech turrets and himself, twenty minutes should be manageable.

But those cyberpunks were too fierce, especially Rebecca's marksmanship, which Lin Yue had experienced firsthand. If it weren't for the Umbra Hounds' sturdy vehicle windshields, those tungsten rounds would have turned his handsome face into Swiss cheese.

As the headlights of a car appeared on the slope road, a high-powered vehicle skidded to a stop in front of Hamster's hideout.

Rat-tat-tat!

The Zetatech turrets opened fire without warning, blasting through the door and walls, unleashing a torrent of bullets at the car. The walls were torn apart like paper.

Maine and the others jumped out of the car and immediately returned fire!

Chaos erupted around the motel, with Dogtown residents fleeing in all directions. The Umbra Hounds' comms were reporting the firefight on the back hill!

Huuuu.

Lin Yue took a deep breath. The sniper scope was firmly locked on Maine's head.

Then he moved the crosshairs to Dorio and Pilar—

Finally, to Rebecca, who was emerging from behind the pickup truck, holding a heavy machine gun that looked like it had been stripped from a Dogtown mech. The muzzle flashes illuminated her manic expression.

[Panels] with their information popped up one by one.

Were these legends of Night City, who dared to challenge Arasaka in the future, about to die under the barrel of a hidden sniper rifle?

Lin Yue took a deep breath, his crosshairs fixed on them, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.

"Damn it, Lin Yue! Shoot! That crazy bitch is going to destroy the turrets with that machine gun!"

Hamster was likely caught in a high-frequency cyber battle, his words gritted through clenched teeth.

"F***!"

Lin Yue cursed.

Veins bulged on his forehead as he twisted the barrel, without hesitation, he aimed at Rebecca.

Hum—Bang!

As the rifle charged, the barrel emitted a blue glow, and the devastatingly powerful bullet shot toward Rebecca, who was still firing wildly.
