Call

At seven o'clock in the morning, Karl opened his eyes to the sound of the alarm clock and muttered his first thought of the day.

"I really don't want to go to school."

But he had to go, whether he wanted to or not.

Rubbing his eyes, Karl got up and began his morning routine, checking the messages that had come in overnight as he washed up.

Jason: "The assistance bonus you applied for has been issued. Sorry, the higher-ups judged this to be a quickly resolved cyberpsychosis case and weren't willing to allocate too much money. I managed to get you 30,000."

As expected, Karl thought. The weapons used by NCPD officers always reflected the human nature of the organization.

Karl: "Don't worry, that's enough."

He sent 30,000 euros to Oliver and 10,000 euros to Jack, then checked the next message.

Blanco: "As expected of a professional. You did a good job. The deal is settled."

The 150,000 euros entrusted by James Norris had arrived.

Karl sent 50,000 euros each to Oliver and Jack and suddenly realized he should have checked his balance before distributing the funds. Nevertheless, the money flow was in order.

After receiving the deposit for the prosthetic King Kong mission, his balance was 915,000 euros. With the added funds from Jason and Blanco, he now had around 960,000 euros.

"Good," Karl thought. "Once I get used to this prosthetic body, I might modify it again."

victor, his prosthetist, had mentioned it would take about half a month to adjust. Although Karl had been diligent in his modifications, he understood the risks of cyberpsychosis and chose to proceed cautiously.

He considered getting a better Sandevistan since the one he had was already top-notch but felt he needed faster computational capabilities instead.

After his morning wash, Karl prepared a simple breakfast: synthetic milk and microwave-heated wheat bread. The genetically modified wheat bread was tasty, but the synthetic milk was just drinkable.

Karl grabbed his breakfast and left his apartment, eating as he walked. It was already five minutes past seven.

"Didi."

A message from Oliver and Jack came through. "Are you up? We're waiting for you downstairs. Let's go to the market center before you head to school."

"Damn it, I don't want to do this anymore," Karl muttered, even as he made his way downstairs.

Despite his complaints, Karl finished his breakfast on the way to meet Oliver and Jack.

"Did you receive the money?" Oliver asked from the driver's seat.

"Of course," Karl replied.

"I'll head to victor's after dropping you off. The rain interference yesterday was terrible. If my eyesight were better, I could've taken that guy out easily. Now that I have the funds, I'm upgrading to Qilusi Type 1 eyes," Oliver said.

"Qilusi? That's high-end stuff. Victor can get that?" Karl asked as he got into the car, greeting Jack with a nod.

"Yeah, as soon as victor told me, I planned to upgrade," Oliver confirmed, turning to Karl. "How'd you sleep?"

"Not as well as you, who don't have to go to school," Karl shot back, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Jack chuckled. "You've got a lot of resentment. Once you get the info on Tanaka, you can quit early. After this mission, why not come to my place for a get-together? I'll make some cornflakes and tamales."

"I trust Mrs. Wells more than you. Can you even cook, Jack?" Karl teased.

"Trust me, bro. Jack's kitchen skills are legit," Jack responded confidently.

Karl, deciding to give his brother some face, nodded. "But you have to invite Misty."

Jack hesitated. "Misty?"

"Yes, you have to call Misty," Oliver added, smirking.

Jack, looking embarrassed but persuaded, finally nodded. "Alright, after this mission, I'll invite Misty. And victor, too."

"Of course," Karl said, feeling a bit more excited about the future.
