Days in the Infinite

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: The Ingenious Use of Skill Points

After accepting the task, Li Ke didn't head directly to the mission site. Instead, he sold three sets of robot turret ammunition, bought additional materials, and crafted another pipe machine gun before hurrying to the location.

On his way, he encountered no zombies—only the ruins left behind by raging flames.

There might still be salvageable items among the debris, but digging them out wasn't something he could accomplish in a day or two. So, without wasting time, Li Ke focused on reaching his destination.

Thanks to the proximity, it only took a few steps before he came across a giant yellow exclamation mark hovering in the air, swaying as if suspended.

This blatantly game-like feature felt jarring in the real world, but Li Ke resolved to test its mechanics regardless.

"Let's see how this works."

Taking a deep breath, Li Ke activated the mission marker. Just as he was expecting either a spontaneous zombie spawn or an instant task completion, a house appeared right in front of him.

Yes, a house.

The ruins vanished without a trace, replaced by a building whose doors and windows were sealed with iron sheets. He froze for two seconds before noticing a zombie standing dormant inside, visible through one of the windows.

If his memory served him right, he'd scavenged this area before. The food on the table—specifically, a can of luncheon meat—was something he had taken earlier. Now, three cans of green peas sat in its place.

"This is… great news!"

This discovery meant resources wouldn't be scarce anymore!

Raising an eyebrow, Li Ke took out his machine gun and aimed for the zombie's head. A single shot shattered the silence, followed by an explosion of gore as the zombie's head burst open, spraying blood and brain matter across the room.

The gunfire alarmed all the zombies inside the house. From bedrooms and closets, they stumbled out, snarling and shambling toward Li Ke's position.

Li Ke systematically aimed and fired, shattering their heads one by one. Once he had dealt with them, he vaulted into the house and finished off the remaining zombies.

Interestingly, he noticed that the directional HUD displayed red dots indicating zombie positions. Whenever he approached one, he'd find a lurking zombie.

"A minimap… not bad at all."

Muttering to himself, Li Ke fired another shot, obliterating the last zombie's head. Only then did he let out a sigh of relief.

The mission on his interface now showed as completed. However, instead of leaving immediately, Li Ke searched the house again.

Unfortunately, his haul remained sparse. He found only a few cans of food and some clothing—nothing particularly useful.

Returning to the merchant's shop, Li Ke submitted the mission. The next moment, a screen popped up before him, and the merchant's voice rang out.

"Thank you for completing the task. I wouldn't have known what to do otherwise. Here is your reward—please choose one."

Li Ke examined the reward list: 4,500 XP, 600 Duke's Casino tokens, and one skill point.

The item rewards included two options: a wrench and a medical kit.

The generous rewards left Li Ke momentarily speechless. A few zombies had yielded such abundant compensation! Considering that completing tasks could refresh the state of locations, this was an incredible opportunity. If he targeted resource-rich areas, the profits would be astronomical!

"So, the real gameplay of this world is doing tasks, huh? But I bet there aren't many ordinary people who've survived long enough to realize this."

Glancing at his level, Li Ke couldn't help but grumble.

He had only unlocked missions after reaching level 50, which required killing at least a thousand zombies. If he hadn't been lucky enough to set that fire and blow up the gas station, he doubted he'd have reached this level yet!

And that was with his relatively high adaptability!

"This world is really harsh on ordinary folks…"

After voicing his complaints, Li Ke didn't hesitate to choose the wrench. While the medical kit seemed immediately useful, the item descriptions revealed that the wrench was far more critical.

It wasn't something he could craft without unlocking it first. Moreover, the wrench could be used to disassemble electrical devices for mechanical parts, which were essential for crafting advanced tools and weapons.

"Perfect. Now, it's time to tackle more tasks."

Glancing at the merchant, Li Ke picked the mission to gather supplies.

Li Ke glanced at the two remaining skill points he had earned. After hesitating for a moment, he opened his skill menu and tentatively allocated one point into Fortitude to see its effects.

The skill point was effortlessly applied, and in the next moment, a strange surge of energy coursed through his body. The fatigue he had accumulated from his activities vanished instantly. Not only that, but his breathing and movements felt more robust and efficient.

Every cell in his body seemed to be rejoicing, celebrating the transformation. The sensation was so exhilarating that Li Ke instinctively allocated his second skill point into Fortitude as well.

The resulting effect was even more intense—almost three times stronger than the first. The overwhelming comfort washed over his body, causing him to collapse to his knees, breathing heavily.

He felt better than he ever had, as if he had returned to his prime teenage years. It was like being 16 or 17 again—able to stay awake for two days straight, bursting with energy, and ready to watch six or seven "action films" in a row without breaking a sweat!

It was as if he had stepped back into the peak of his youth.

But the changes didn't stop there. He noticed an immediate improvement in his flexibility, able to bend down with ease. Even his vision was sharper—he could clearly see objects 50 meters away, despite having been mildly nearsighted before.

Pulling open his shirt, Li Ke examined his body. Though his slight belly—often mocked by Erina Nakiri—was still there, he noticed something else. His once lethargic "little brother" now stood at full attention, brimming with vitality. A powerful urge began surging through him, igniting a primal need to unleash this newfound energy.

Clenching his fist, Li Ke threw a punch with all his might. The sensation was entirely different from before—it didn't feel like his full strength or even close to his limit. He realized he could now throw dozens of full-power punches in rapid succession without tiring.

His Fortitude consumption had significantly decreased during any physical action.

"This is… true power!"

Li Ke clenched his fists, feeling invincible. If he met Erina Nakiri again, he was determined to crush her—purely in terms of strength, of course.

"It's just a pity my physique hasn't changed much."

He looked at his still-slightly-rounded stomach and sighed. He had always admired the bodies of fitness enthusiasts, but it seemed that achieving such a physique would still require regular exercise.

"Well, at this rate, give me a little time, and even without the perfect body, I'll look great anyway."

With a self-deprecating chuckle, Li Ke put his clothes back on and prepared to leave.

His energy and vitality now at their peak, he was ready to tackle all of the merchant's tasks and see if the mission board would reset. If not, he planned to start mining and digging tunnels. Either way, he needed to keep getting stronger to fight zombies more effectively and gather resources.

However, as he took his first step, an unexpected sensation of friction—soft yet firm—ran through him. The sudden, sharp feeling made him drop to his knees, nearly crying out in pain from the embarrassment and discomfort.

"Sss… Why is this thing so active now? Is this what they call a bad start?"

Kneeling on the ground, Li Ke gritted his teeth and muttered his frustration.

If only he were wearing his original clothes! But most of his outfits had been shredded or cut up during previous encounters. Now, with his newfound "spirit," the situation was painfully unmanageable.

He tried to adjust himself, but it was futile. Changing his pants wasn't an option either, as the merchant didn't sell any.

"..."

Looking at his calloused and blistered hands, he realized they weren't a better alternative to the offending zipper. He reluctantly turned his gaze to the ever-smiling female merchant.

"Sorry, but I'm out of options here."

Taking a deep breath, Li Ke closed the shop door and used his jacket to block the windows. He bowed deeply to the merchant.

"I'm about to do something to you. If you object, just blink."

The merchant remained motionless.

"Alright, then. I'll just borrow your... posterior. Don't worry—I promise not to go all the way!"

Li Ke nodded to himself, climbed over the table, and positioned himself behind the merchant. Grasping the waistband of her denim shorts, he slid them down and pressed his "injured" self against her soft, ample curves.

A groan of relief escaped his lips.

"Ahh…"
