Chapter 8: Two Months In a Flash
The next three months after that incident was one of the busiest periods for Jules.
Immediately after returning home, reporters and journalists who had gathered information about him trailed him there.
They probed him a lot, questioning him about the Party Massacre incident and how he felt when he was under the Ravens.
Some even attempted to bribe him for information.
Within days, the Onyx Ravens and the Global Human Government – GHG – sent personnel to stop the increasing harassment Jules was facing.
After that, Jules spent most of his time using the cultivating techniques provided for him to grow his core.
He didn't even indulge in cooking—which he had enjoyed even before his grandma's death—and instead ordered food almost every day.
The first time Jules left his house was two weeks after leaving the Ravens.
The purpose of leaving the house was to stage his first encounter with his future anonymous backer.
After that, he left his home more and even began venturing in Beyonds again.
After another two weeks, Jules decided to relocate to the inner districts of Nyxvale.
During this time, Jules' lifestyle evidently changed as he was seen to be dressing better, using better items and the observers began to notice the increase in Jules' mana.
The Ravens also sparked rumors from within, making it seem like someone who actually invested in Jules
This was all playing according to Kira Moon's script causing Jules to wonder how easily people can be manipulated.
A month passed and the interest in Jules came up again because of his performance within Beyonds.
But Jules shut them all down by saying he didn't need backers anymore. What he once needed from them was no more.
He was still at the late Light Orange Core stage at this point, and the effects of the cultivation techniques were beginning to diminish.
Still, Jules didn't relent and put in the work, steadily pushing towards the goal Kira Moon gave him.
Two months passed, Jules wasn't talked about much anymore, but based on his feats, he was once again seen as a prodigy in the industry.
His overwhelming control over mana and his proficiency in magic, especially his water magic, was that impressive.
Jules spent the next month participating in Beyond missions–causing some intrigued people to form hypotheses on why he was doing that.
The hypothesis people believed the most was, "The Party Massacre scarred him, forcing him to desire strength to take revenge. A sort of character development."
Jules didn't see all this because he wasn't on the internet, only participating in offline hobbies during his breaks.
The information he got was directly transmitted from Kira Moon to him through a private communication device.
Almost three months passed, as the year neared its end, Jules decided to request a rank promotion.
He obtained various C-rankers' acknowledgement, participated in the minimum required amount of raids and explorations, all that was left was to prove his skills to GHG and Raven officials.
December 13, 2403.
A few weeks until the Promethean Institute entrance exams and even closer to the end of application period.
Jules arrived at the Raven's Branch where he was going to prove his skills.
Donning straight brown leather pants and a black T-shirt with rolled up sleeves, Jules walked through the halls, the sound of his boots echoing with the boots of his escorts.
After growing his core size to an average level, Jules started physical workouts now that his body could handle it.
His once unremarkable features had sharpened, and his lean muscles now stood out with definition.
It looked like he had grown taller, now standing at six-foot-one—three inches more than three months ago.
His onyx black hair flowed to his neck like a stream of water under a dark sky, some strands covering his forehead.
He avoided wearing any accessories today because most of what he usually wore were magical items that complimented him.
As Jules' silver-grey eyes fell on the double doors at the end of the hall, he took in a deep breath.
On reaching the door, the two escorts stayed back, telling him to go in.
Jules walked into a large, mostly empty room with metallic walls.
At the sides of the room were multiple crafted brown figurines with black dots on various parts of their body. They were the main space occupants of this room.
'So those are my targets…' Jules thought, walking towards the end of the room, where three personnels sat.
They sat behind a table, wearing an attire that reflected their affiliations. There were two GHG officials present and one Raven–two A-rankers and one B-ranker.
Occupying the table in front of them were three tablets.
In front of the table was a pedestal that held a device with the looks of an orb.
Reaching close to the table, Jules said, "Hello. I am Jules Evanava, here for my promotion test."
The A-rank GHG official, an old looking man, nodded. "Nice to meet you. Can I see your adventurer identification card?'
"Alright," Jules walked up to their table, gave it to the official and watched as his card was scanned by the tablet placed on the table.
Returning his card, the official pointed at the pedestal.
"First thing we'll need you to do is to test your core. I'm certain you've done this before, just repeat that."
"Okay."
Turning around towards the pedestal, Jules recalled how he did this test when he first became an adventurer.
'The beginning of my journey looked really promising. It didn't take me up to three months to become a D-rank after starting as an E-rank. A year later, I'm attempting a promotion again.'
Jules placed his hand on the orb and silently watched as the orb drank his mana.
After the small transparent orb looked like it had its fill, Jules stepped aside to let the officials observe the change.
The thick translucent energy that was within twirled, merging with the orb itself. Following this, the orb slowly changed color and expanded in size.
