Chapter 219: 218 Siege and Capture Fortresses
Oppression. Impact. Chaos.
Li Wei felt like a canoe in the stormy ocean, with no resistance, merely bobbing up and down with the furious waves.
Always on the brink of overturning.
Danger.
Danger danger danger!
The moment he felt the leather texture of the football in his arms, Li Wei could feel the viper-like gazes locking onto him, his hunter/prey instincts awakening; but crucially, the tactical shift from a quick short pass to a ground run didn't allow Li Wei enough time to adjust.
At that moment, Li Wei felt like he had seen this scene before, probably in some escape room movie—
Waking up from unconsciousness, without having time to figure out what was happening, walls were closing in from all directions, the oncoming sense of oppression triggered a full adrenaline rush. If he didn't want to be crushed into a pancake, he had to go into survival mode immediately, wasting not a single second.
The more dangerous it was, the more he needed to stay calm.
On both sides, two linemen were closing in fast. Before Smith threw the football, Li Wei was observing, getting ready to break free.
Now, it was the right moment to step forward—
A mistake.
Moving to the left.
Because Kelsey was positioned on the right.
Usually, the side with the tight end was regarded as the strong side, breaking through here could utilize Kelsey as a lead blocker; but it also meant facing a dense buildup of the defensive group.
Li Wei, known for his speed and agility, could play more effectively one-on-one; he didn't hesitate and burst toward the weak side.
Outside linebacker James Harris was pleased, It was the perfect timing.
This time, he wouldn't make the same mistake again. Transferring from the traditional powerhouse, the Pittsburgh Steelers, to the New England Patriots was specifically to strengthen Foxborough's ground defense. One mistake was already bad enough, but to make the same mistake twice in the same ditch was too—
Wait, what's happening?
One second ago, Harris had targeted Smith, readying to tackle; the next second, he switched his target, preparing to intercept Li Wei.
This switch required Harris to adjust his footsteps and lower his center of gravity, grappling a quarterback and grappling a running back were two entirely different things. At 6 feet tall and 242 pounds, Harris exposed the shortcoming of his slow reaction time.
After all, he was a 38-year-old veteran.
During the switch, there was a very very brief pause. Harris hadn't managed to step forward when a shadow accelerated right into him.
Agile, quick, and light, just like a tornado.
Harris had just finished switching positions, his thoughts weren't even clear yet when the next second, the impact was already surging from below like a tsunami.
A jab.
Grunt.
Even though it hit his shoulder, it felt like it smashed into his jaw. Harris didn't have time to react when the force from his right shoulder spun his body around, like the neon signs at the entrance of barber shops in the red-light district, spinning clockwise at high speed, the entire world turning into a blur of lights.
Harris: Damn.
Then, Harris had already lost sight of Li Wei.
A pause, a step forward, a burst of speed, a frontal breakthrough, the colliding force between shoulders exploding deep in the bone joints.
Ah!
A roar burst from the depth of his Dantian, his steps continued without pausing, yet before he could even speed up, he saw a figure the next second.
Butler.
Cornerback Butler was very calm and very steady.
Originally, Butler was covering Wide Receiver Chris Conley. Conley's deceptive route running almost fooled him, dragging his steps toward the deep area.
But Butler was calm enough to see through Conley's tactic and noticed the exchange between Smith and Li Wei, immediately shaking off Conley and rushing back.
Quickly stepping forward, his movement was not rushed but slightly paused; Butler observed Li Wei's start, preparing his next move to intercept and tackle.
So, a standoff—
For that brief millisecond, Li Wei and Butler faced each other like "Tom and Jerry", neither player making a rash move.
But while Butler could wait, Li Wei couldn't, any longer and the short pass area would become completely engulfed by the defensive group's blue wave.
Li Wei took off first.
Butler's pupils shrank, "Bingo!"
He knew Li Wei was planning to break through from the outside, which was Li Wei's left side, Butler's right side, near the sideline, tearing open a path.
Edgerunner.
That's Li Wei's nickname, right?
Butler was ready to put an end to that foolish nickname today.
Moreover, Butler had fully anticipated it; Li Wei first feinted to the right but it was just a feint, then broke through from the left. He knew Li Wei's ability to change direction and he didn't take his opponent lightly.
Everything was under his control.
Butler intentionally acted deceived, swayed to his left, then quickly launched a second effort to cut to the right, intercepting Li Wei.
Butler: Haha, rookie.
However, just then, Butler saw a smile appear in the helmet opposite him, and before he could react, Li Wei incredibly pulled to the right again, shifting his center of gravity smoothly.
The second change of direction.
Butler: Stunned.
It was as if there was an invisible rope between the two men, Li Wei's steps pulling Butler's upper body to change direction again, but Butler's lower body clearly couldn't keep up, left behind, splitting his body in half, creating a misalignment, and Butler could do nothing but dive forward.
But!
The center of gravity couldn't keep up.
Butler, like a wooden stake, slipped underfoot and thudded to the ground.
His peripheral vision helplessly watched as Li Wei's steps bypassed his head and continued forward.
Disgrace!
Utter humiliation!
Li Wei: Enjoy your break.
Ignoring the flattened Butler, Li Wei adjusted his steps twice in quick succession and finally accelerated.
Directly ahead, he could see Conley retreating back, and in a flash, there was no time for communication, but Li Wei gave Conley a look and they quickly exchanged glances.
Conley ran back diagonally, positioning himself slightly in front of Li Wei on the right side to escort him, and both unleashed their speed, charging straight ahead at full force.
"One tackle!"
"Two tackles!"
"Gap, torn open, Li Wei with his unmatched step forcefully tore open a gap, New England's all-in front line pressure didn't work, now because too many players were hoarded in the front half, leaving the backfield empty, Li Wei under Conley's escort is making a long drive straight in."
"Forty-yard line!"
"Safety McCourty is rapidly approaching."
"Beautiful! Conley blocks him, McCourty is directly knocked off by Conley."
"Chung Family! Safety Chung Family is now New England's last line of defense."
"Chung Family is closing in, Conley! My God, Conley has caught up once again."
"This Wide Receiver in his third year almost lost his starting position during the off-season, but he fought hard, overcame four competitors, and secured the starting spot, now he's also showing his spirited determination."
"Conley shakes off McCourty, trying to intercept Chung Family."

"Marvelous!"
"Conley disrupted Chung Family for a moment, he wasn't able to tackle Chung Family, who stunningly broke through Conley's block head-on and continued toward Li Wei, but Conley's disruption bought precious time for Li Wei."
"Li Wei! Chung Family!"
"Chung Family! Li Wei!"
"Number 23 vs Number 23! A head-to-head match between two Asian players!"
"My God, we are witnessing history once again!"
