Chapter 89: Chapter 89: "What Terrible Taste!"
Yun Feng couldn't help but smirk as he listened to Ma Hongjun's rant.
"So, after all that, you just fought him head-on?" Yun Feng teased.
Ma Hongjun puffed up his chest indignantly.
"Of course! He insulted me—how could I not fight back?"
Yun Feng rolled his eyes but remained silent, letting the others react.
Tang San, trying to diffuse the tension, laid out a tactical plan:
"Control-type Spirit Masters are tricky to deal with, especially in one-on-one situations. Fatty, you focus on ranged harassment. Dai Mubai and I will engage him head-on, and Oscar will handle support.
"If we work together, he won't stand a chance. Control-types are inherently disadvantaged against multiple opponents. As long as he can't control all of us at once, he's bound to lose."
Tang San's confidence was evident. He continued,
"If his martial spirit is indeed a natural counter to flames, that explains why your Phoenix Fire had no effect. I'll focus on countering his control abilities with my own. Even though his spirit power surpasses mine, I can disrupt his rhythm, giving you and Dai Mubai an opening to strike."
Yun Feng leaned back, amused but uninterested. Tang San's detailed plan had conveniently excluded him, but Yun Feng didn't mind.
Less work for me, he thought. Let them handle it; I'm just here to stir the pot.
After a hurried dinner and a couple of Oscar's restorative sausages for Ma Hongjun, the group set off quietly toward the academy gate.
Just as they reached the exit, a shadow darted out to block their path.
Startled, Ma Hongjun instantly summoned his Phoenix Fire, casting a purplish-red glow over the scene. Only then did they recognize the figure.
It was Xiao Wu.
"Geez, Xiao Wu, you nearly gave me a heart attack!" Ma Hongjun muttered, dismissing his flames.
Xiao Wu crossed her arms, her big, dark eyes brimming with curiosity.
"And where exactly are you sneaking off to, huh? Fatty, what happened to your face? Did someone beat you up?"
Ma Hongjun coughed awkwardly, avoiding eye contact. He wasn't about to admit the embarrassing details of his defeat in front of Xiao Wu, who disapproved of his "evil fire" solutions.
Yun Feng, on the other hand, saw no need to sugarcoat the situation.
"He got thrashed while trying to pick up a girl at a brothel," Yun Feng said matter-of-factly.
Xiao Wu and Ning Rongrong, who had just arrived, burst out laughing.
"Are you serious?" Ning Rongrong giggled, grabbing Xiao Wu's hand. "This, I have to see!"
A Short While Later
"Fatty, Dai Mubai, this is where you come to handle your business?" Xiao Wu asked incredulously.
The group stood in front of a shabby row of low houses in a remote corner of Soto City. The dilapidated buildings barely stood three meters tall, with peeling paint and broken windows.
Pink lanterns hung at the doorways, casting a hazy glow over the scene. A few heavily made-up women lounged near the entrances, beckoning to passersby in seductive tones.
Oscar grimaced.
"No wonder you're always talking about finding gold phoenixes in haystacks. This place is a haystack!"
Even Tang San, who had never been to such places before, couldn't hide his discomfort.
Fatty chuckled sheepishly.
"It's cheap, alright? One silver coin for one round, or two silver coins for three rounds. Great value for money. Besides, with Dai Mubai being broke these days, I can't afford to splurge."
"Don't drag me into this," Dai Mubai snapped.
Fatty shot him a look.
"Are you serious right now? How many times did I cover for you before, huh? Don't act all high and mighty now."
"Alright, enough," Yun Feng interjected, cutting off their squabble. "Focus. We're not here to reminisce about your bad decisions."
Fatty, suitably chastised, nodded.
"Wait here. I'll go check if that bastard is still around."
He disappeared into the brothel, leaving the rest of the group to prepare.
Oscar, ever the joker, began chanting his soul incantations.
"Big sausage, small sausage, mushroom sausage…"
Xiao Wu and Ning Rongrong rolled their eyes in unison.
"Ugh, can you be any grosser, Sausage Uncle?" Ning Rongrong muttered, earning a laugh from Xiao Wu.
Moments later, Fatty returned, practically bouncing with excitement.
"He's still here! He's just settling his bill—should be out any second. Guys, if you help me take him down, dinner's on me!"
Oscar raised an eyebrow.
"Thanks, but no thanks. With your taste in food, I think I'll pass."
The group collectively nodded in agreement, leaving Fatty to mutter indignantly.
Just then, the brothel door swung open, and a man stepped out.
Fatty pointed furiously.
"That's him!"
The man matched Fatty's earlier description—a short, coal-skinned man in his forties, with a smug grin plastered on his face. His right hand was wrapped in bandages, and he wore tattered shorts and flip-flops.
As he swaggered down the street, humming a lewd tune, Fatty's fists clenched tightly, knuckles cracking audibly.
"Wait," Tang San said firmly, holding Fatty back. "We strike together.
"
Yun Feng, standing in the shadows, observed the scene with a faint smile.
This should be fun.
