Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Fire and Ice Heart Lotus
"Third soul skill: Gravity Increase!"
"Fourth soul skill: Position Trace!"
"Fifth soul skill: Gravity Crush!"
The moment his feet touched the ground, Zhao Wuji unleashed three soul skills in quick succession. Just as Dai Mubai had warned, he was truly serious this time! It wasn't because he couldn't afford to lose—he simply couldn't bear the humiliation of being overwhelmed in front of his students.
Xiao Tianyang, feeling the gravitational squeeze constricting his movements and the reduction in his speed, couldn't help but frown. "This combo... No matter how agile my steps are, they're meaningless. Slowing, locking, controlling—this is too much!" he muttered inwardly.
But as Zhao Wuji charged toward him, Xiao Tianyang exhaled softly and steadied himself.
"Vigorous Vajra Palm!" Zhao Wuji roared, using a full 70% of his strength this time.
Xiao Tianyang remained calm, activating his first soul skill: "Myriad Transformations Fire!"
Normally, Xiao Tianyang didn't shout out the names of his moves—it wasn't his style. But this time, he did so deliberately, knowing it might throw Zhao Wuji off.
Sure enough, Zhao Wuji hesitated momentarily, allowing the nine flames surrounding Xiao Tianyang to transform into blazing spears that shot toward Zhao Wuji at lightning speed. Gravity seemed to not affect them.
No one saw this coming.
Dai Mubai's jaw dropped. "Wasn't his first soul skill supposed to be auxiliary? How is it suddenly so aggressive?"
Tang San, however, was deep in thought. "There's more to it than we can see. Notice how the flames change color before entering our body—from orange-red to green—and yet, as spears, the color remains unchanged. What does that tell you?"
Dai Mubai's expression shifted. "Could his first soul skill have dual functions?"
Tang San nodded slightly. "Myriad Transformations Fire... Brother Tianyang gave it a fitting name."
Zhao Wuji's combat instincts kicked in as his eyes widened in shock. Activating his first soul skill: Motionless Bright King Body, he braced himself against the incoming spears. But their penetrating force far exceeded his expectations.
They pierced through his outer defenses, stopping only half a meter from his body before vibrating ominously and emitting a dazzling light.
"Not good!" Zhao Wuji muttered, but it was too late. The spears exploded, engulfing him in a fiery inferno.
"Sixth soul skill: Great Vajra Roar!"
The roar erupted from the flames, dispelling them in an instant. The shockwaves left Xiao Tianyang dazed and his eardrums ringing. But Zhao Wuji had already charged forward, ready to strike again.
"Boy, let's see where you run this time!"
Xiao Tianyang barely regained his composure, but instead of retreating, a sly smile appeared on his face. "Vice Dean Zhao, where do you think Xiao Wu learned that last trick?"
"You little brat!" Zhao Wuji growled, gritting his teeth.
Zhao Wuji soon realized he'd been tricked again. Xiao Tianyang's combat style—reminiscent of Xiao Wu's—was not a coincidence. It stemmed from one of the techniques Xiao Tianyang had mastered over the years: the 'Tianshan Plum-plucking Hands'.
While Xiao Tianyang himself didn't integrate the technique into his primary combat system, he'd passed it down to Xiao Wu, who mastered it brilliantly.
Two fingers extended from Xiao Tianyang's hand, pinching Zhao Wuji's wrist mid-attack. A surge of powerlessness overwhelmed Zhao Wuji, nearly driving him to his knees.
But Xiao Tianyang didn't press the advantage too far. Instead, he swung Zhao Wuji around like a ragdoll and hurled him through a nearby structure, where he crashed into a room with a thunderous impact.
"That's enough!" Zhao Wuji roared furiously as six of his soul rings glowed simultaneously, his soul power surging.
"Not good! We need to back off!" Dai Mubai shouted in alarm.
"Great Vajra Roar!"
The ground trembled as the roar reverberated. Rubble scattered in all directions, but Xiao Tianyang had anticipated this. Flames reappeared, forming a protective wall in front of him.
Zhao Wuji's soundwaves tore through the fiery barriers layer by layer, but Xiao Tianyang wasn't trying to block the attack entirely—he was buying time. As the final barrier crumbled, his second soul ring lit up.
The flames vanished, replaced by a black lotus hovering over Xiao Tianyang's chest. The surrounding air warped from the intense heat radiating off it.
"Second soul skill: Fire and Ice Heart Lotus!"
The black lotus bloomed, exuding an aura of pure destruction. Even Zhao Wuji felt uneasy as he observed the power radiating from the lotus.
"What is with this kid's martial soul?" Zhao Wuji muttered. "One moment it's auxiliary, the next it's offensive, and now it's something this terrifying... Wait, this is his second soul skill?! A ten-thousand-year soul ring?!"
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Zhao Wuji immediately adopted a defensive stance. But the black lotus descended, its explosive force shaking the entire clearing. The ground quaked violently as the explosion engulfed the area, leaving a massive blackened lotus behind in its wake.
Unlike typical explosions, the devastation didn't end there. Within the core of the lotus, a series of smaller explosions erupted continuously, creating waves of heat that sent chills down the spines of onlookers.
This was the true nature of Ice Heart Fire Lotus. The skill wasn't about fire or ice—it was about the heart. The initial explosion inflicted maximum damage, while the expanding lotus served as a method of control. But the repeated detonations within its core? Those were the true killing blows.
Xiao Tianyang had never tested the full power of this move before. In his sparring sessions with Tang San and the others, there was no need to use such a destructive skill. And against soul beasts in the Soul Hunting Forest, it was far too lethal—leaving no remains behind.
Today marked the skill's first real use, and its power was evident in the quaking ground and the agonized roars emanating from within the blackened lotus.
"Xiao Tianyang, retract your second soul skill! It's causing too much commotion!" Dai Mubai shouted urgently.
Xiao Tianyang scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "This is the first time I've used it—I don't actually know how to stop it."
Dai Mubai sighed in exasperation, glancing toward the explosion. "Vice Dean Zhao, I can only wish you good luck."
