Chapter 128: Chapter 128: Reunion and Arrival at Last
Tights had just left a lecture on astronauts when Yamiru called out to her.
"Hey, it's really you, Tights," Yamiru greeted as he approached with Dr. Omori and Zanpa in tow. Standing before them was the girl who had once saved Yamiru when he was gravely ill. She wore a knit cap, a layered vest and shirt, a short skirt paired with long boots, and a small blue shoulder bag.
"Hm?" Tights turned at the sound of her name. Recognizing Yamiru, she exclaimed, "Yamiru? What are you doing here?"
Carrying several shopping bags, Yamiru chuckled. "I should be the one asking why you're here, Tights."
"Because of what you told me about Jiora! I decided to switch to writing sci-fi novels," she said with a grin. "I heard there are often amazing science lectures here, so I moved nearby. What about you? It's been so long — I thought you'd have reached that mountain you were heading to by now."
"Ah, it's a bit embarrassing to explain..." Yamiru scratched his head. He noticed her gaze shift to the two people behind him and introduced them. "This is Dr. Omori, and this is Zanpa. And this beautiful young lady here is Tights, daughter of Dr. Brief, the founder of Capsule Corporation."
"What?!" Zanpa froze in shock.
"The daughter of Dr. Brief..." Even the usually composed Dr. Omori was taken aback. "You know someone that important?"
"Hi there!" Tights greeted warmly. "But no need to treat me like someone special. I'm not into science. I aspire to be a bestselling author!" Turning to Yamiru, she teased, "Why'd you bring up my family background right away?"
"To give them a little scare," Yamiru replied with a grin.
"Whatever," Tights said, not particularly bothered. She suggested, "Let's find a place to sit and chat. Judging by the look of you, you'll probably be hitting the road again soon, right?" She winked playfully at him.
"Alright, you got me," Yamiru admitted, raising the bags in his hands.
Dr. Omori and Zanpa followed behind them.
Still shaken by Tights' identity, Zanpa remained stiff and formal. Capsule Corporation! he thought. One of the most powerful companies in the world, said to control unimaginable wealth! And Yamiru knows the heiress...
Dr. Omori, observing the cheerful exchange between Yamiru and Tights, mused, This boy used to carry such a heavy heart, but now he seems so lively. Ah, the energy of youth...
"What? That unlucky?" Tights suddenly exclaimed at something Yamiru had just told her.
---
"Welcome!"
The four entered a modest café. As they waited for their orders, they noticed a television on the wall playing a government space agency news segment. It was about a popular idol, An Azuki, who was set to board a rocket into space in 91 days.
"She's doing what?!" Zanpa blurted out in shock.
"What's wrong?" Yamiru asked.
"I told you before, I used to be a professional manager. This An Azuki is a major idol, incredibly famous and influential. Why would someone like her risk her life going to space? It's absurd!"
"Oh," Yamiru replied, clearly uninterested.
"Maybe it's her dream?" Tights chimed in, intrigued. "Being an idol doesn't conflict with having aspirations to explore space. If I had the chance, I'd love to experience space too! It'd inspire me with loads of new ideas!"
Dr. Omori asked, "Doesn't your father have the technology to send you into space?"
"To Dad, space travel tech is too simple. He's never been interested," Tights said.
Dr. Omori was dumbfounded. "That's... quite the luxury..."
Yamiru laughed. "But your dad and your sister have researched Jiora's spacecraft, haven't they? They must have tons of related technology by now. If you asked, I'm sure he could build you a spaceship in no time."
Tights stuck out her tongue playfully. "I don't want to rely on him."
Dr. Omori caught the mention of Jiora but refrained from prying further.
Meanwhile, Zanpa could only stew in envy. Yamiru, you lucky jerk...
The coffee arrived, and their conversation continued.
Tights was amazed by Dr. Omori's research on time machines. Zanpa, summoning his courage, asked if Tights had ever considered becoming an idol. He confidently claimed she could outshine An Azuki, but Tights laughed and declined, saying she had no interest for now.
"So, what happened to you? You mentioned being captured by bad guys — how did you escape?"
Tights leaned in, eager to hear Yamiru's story. Earlier on the way here, he had briefly alluded to this part of his journey.
Yamiru hesitated for a moment, realizing how embarrassing it was to talk about his misfortunes. He laughed it off instead. "Of course, I outsmarted them. Villains are always idiots. With my skills, escaping was a piece of cake."
"Really?" Tights waved her finger with a knowing smile. "You're not being honest, are you?"
Yamiru replied, "If there's a chance, I'll tell you the full story another time."
Tights blinked playfully. "That sounds like something a guy who wants to ask me out would say."
Yamiru grinned. "I doubt there's a man on this planet who wouldn't want to go on a date with the Capsule Corporation heiress." He glanced at Zanpa, who nodded vigorously, and Dr. Omori, who froze for a moment before nodding slowly as well.
"Well, since you put it that way, I'll let it slide." Tights smiled. "Next time, I'll hear your story."
"Alright." Yamiru nodded. "Next time."
And with that, it was time to say goodbye again.
"I've had a question since the beginning," Dr. Omori suddenly spoke up, his confusion evident. "When we were 100 meters away, there's no way you could've seen Miss Tights' shop entrance from that angle. How did you lead us straight to her? It's... not scientifically possible!"
Zanpa finally caught on. "Yeah, come to think of it, that is strange. Don't tell me you have x-ray vision?"
Though his tone was joking, Yamiru nodded earnestly.
Zanpa froze, mouth agape. Then he slammed his hands on the table, leaning forward. "For real?!"
"Who knows? How else would you explain it?" Yamiru said nonchalantly.
"We're asking you!" Zanpa scratched his head in frustration. "If you really have x-ray vision, then doesn't that mean—" He glanced at Tights' outfit but stopped himself from speaking further. The thought alone was unbearable — how could such a miraculous ability land in someone else's lap instead of his?
Tights shrugged at Zanpa as if admitting it. Zanpa groaned dramatically and banged his head against the table in despair.
Yamiru and Tights exchanged a glance before bursting into laughter.
Yamiru had vaguely explained his Golden Gaze, an ability to sense energy fields, to Tights before. She theorized that his eyes could detect electromagnetic fields emitted by living beings. While Yamiru didn't fully agree, it was certainly unrelated to the stereotypical x-ray vision of trashy novels.
Dr. Omori shook his head in exasperation. "...What a terrible personality."
---
"Well then, goodbye."
At the café entrance, the four said their farewells. Tights patted Yamiru on the head.
"We'll meet again," Yamiru said. He had already changed into a simpler outfit, ready for travel.
Tights waved as she walked away.
"Thank you for taking us in," Yamiru and Zanpa both said to Dr. Omori, "and for seeing us off."
"It was nothing. You two dealt with that giant shark for me," Dr. Omori replied stoically. "Besides, I'm not fond of crowds."
Soon, Dr. Omori made his way to the small boat docked by the coast.
"After drifting at sea for so long, your job must be gone by now," Yamiru said to Zanpa.
Zanpa sighed. "Forget work — my family probably thinks I'm dead by now." Then he perked up, smiling. "But hey, I'm still alive, aren't I?"
Yamiru smiled too.
"Even if my old job's gone, I plan to keep working as a professional manager!" Zanpa said enthusiastically. "Yamiru, with your skills, why don't you come to my hometown and become a professional fighter? I'll be your manager — I'm sure you'll become a star! I'm confident about it!"
"Are there fighters as skilled as me?" Yamiru joked. In the end, though, he bid farewell to Zanpa and set off on his own journey. "I'm still alive, aren't I?"
Carrying his bag, Yamiru walked alone, unfolding his map. He circled the area he remembered as Mount Paozu with unwavering determination.
---
This time, Yamiru's route was entirely different from before, and so were the sights he encountered along the way.
Twelve days later, he arrived at a small town, where he stopped to rest and resupply.
He asked the locals about Mount Paozu, piecing together information and adjusting his direction with each new lead.
Yamiru never let his guard down, constantly using his Golden Gaze to keep an eye on his surroundings for any suspicious humanoid energy. In simple terms, he was always on the lookout for the misfortune of running into the two old mummies and one brat from the Crane School again. Overall, the journey was uneventful, though there were moments of heightened anxiety.
Sometimes, Yamiru would wake up from nightmares in the middle of the night, particularly when camping outdoors. The lack of safety made him restless, often leading to sleepless nights. The worst instance left him gasping for air, his chest tight, heart pounding as if it would explode, and his body wracked with dry heaves. He would remind himself repeatedly to stay calm, telling himself there wasn't a soul — or even a mosquito — around. He spent the entire night staring at the dim night sky, resuming his journey the next day.
Occasionally, he'd get so exhausted he'd fall asleep leaning against the roadside during the day, sleeping deeply until a passing stranger woke him up.
Once, he instinctively jumped up and threw the stranger into a tumble, nearly following up with a combination punch before realizing it was just a kind-hearted passerby. Apologizing profusely, he ended up traveling with the stranger, gradually striking up a pleasant conversation. The stranger, amused by the precocious boy with extraordinary skills, invited Yamiru to visit their village.
Yamiru gladly accepted, staying in the small nomadic community for a week. The village's rustic charm reminded him of Dragon Ball's whimsical world, filling him with a sense of nostalgia. Among such simple and kind-hearted people, Yamiru felt himself gradually relaxing.
But every now and then, faces of similarly kind villagers would flash before his eyes, their expressions twisted in agony as they were tortured to death in front of him. Tao Pai Pai's cold, mocking voice would echo in his ears, making his breathing erratic, his forehead drenched in sweat, and veins bulge on his temples.
Soon after, Yamiru bid farewell to the village and resumed his journey.
He gradually realized he was grappling with a form of psychological trauma, scars left behind from witnessing Tao Pai Pai's merciless atrocities. Knowing this was unhealthy, he tried to overcome it, but the harder he tried, the more disconnected he felt from the part of himself riddled with wounds. This self-confrontation only added to his mental burden.
At times, Yamiru feared he might develop a split personality, burying the fragile, traumatized part of himself in his subconscious.
On the 44th day, Yamiru stopped in a bustling small city. With all the money he had earned along the way, he sought out a psychologist to address his worsening mental state. The doctor, however, was shocked by Yamiru's description of his condition, repeatedly asking if he was serious, if this was some kind of prank, or if there was a hidden camera filming a bizarre reality show.
After some time of therapy and self-care, Yamiru's condition improved significantly. At the very least, he could now sleep soundly every night.
---
"Hello, everyone! I'm your adorable Azuki! Today's song is 'Brave Girls, Chase Your Miracles'!" A cheerful idol sang and danced on TV, her energy infectious. "Only 32 days until Azuki rockets off to the mysterious outer space! Will you all come support and cheer for Azuki? You have to!"
Yamiru suddenly realized how much time had passed.
"Thirty-two days left?" he murmured. "It's been nearly two months since I parted ways with Dr. Omori and Tights. I can't delay any longer."
With that, Yamiru set off again.
On his first journey to Mount Paozu, Yamiru encountered all sorts of troublemakers — like the Carrot Gang, the Red Ribbon Army, mountain bandits, and the Crane School. This time, however, the road was relatively smooth, without any particularly annoying obstacles. Still, battling his own exhaustion was no easier. He often felt frustrated with himself, ashamed that Tao Pai Pai had left him in such a state. As a transmigrator, he thought bitterly, wasn't this utterly disgraceful?
Yamiru trekked through the wild, picking fruits from trees, taking shelter in caves during rain, and leaping across slippery river rocks. More than once, he narrowly avoided falling into the water.
On the 72nd day, Yamiru encountered a sudden gale while traveling on an open road in the wilderness. Struggling against the wind, he amused himself with an impromptu moonwalk, entertaining no one but himself. He eventually tumbled backward and lay on the ground laughing, only to swallow a mouthful of sand and wind. Scrambling for cover, he found refuge behind a rock.
Finally, on the 81st day, Yamiru arrived at the location he had marked on his map.
