Chapter 49: "Letting Down Their Guard"
Scar's squad members leaned on each other for support as they looked to their captain for direction. Scar assessed his own injuries and gave a small nod before leading his team forward into the lush green jungle.
They seemed familiar with their surroundings, moving purposefully toward a specific goal.
"Scar planned this," Krillin quickly realized. "He chose this plant-covered planet to find medicinal herbs to treat his squad's injuries."
Scar glanced back at Krillin with a sheepish smile, clearly embarrassed.
Krillin scratched his head, conflicted. "I was just about to give them Senzu Beans, but I guess I could save them for now. No, wait! If I don't give them Senzu Beans, how can I earn their trust?"
As Scar led the group, they soon arrived at a small green wooden hut. Its shabby appearance made Krillin raise his eyebrows.
"So, this is Scar's usual supply point," Krillin thought, clicking his tongue.
"Come on in, Krillin," Scar said, inviting him inside.
Krillin entered the hut, casually sitting on an unidentified green plant that served as a seat.
Scar, seeing Krillin seated, lowered himself into another seat, but as he moved, he gasped in pain. "Tsssss!" His movements pulled at the wound on his side, causing his face to break out in a cold sweat.
Krillin's eyes lit up. "Perfect opportunity!"
He flicked a dried Senzu Bean toward Scar, who instinctively caught it mid-air. Scar stared at the shriveled bean in confusion.
"Eat it," Krillin said with a mysterious grin. "It'll heal your injuries instantly."
Though hesitant, Scar brought the bean to his mouth and bit down.
"Crunch! Crunch! Gulp!"
Scar froze for a moment before looking down at his once-wounded arm. "Amazing… it's healed! Completely healed!" he muttered, awestruck.
This was exactly the reaction Krillin expected. Scar's gratitude toward him visibly deepened.
In Scar's heart, he thought, "Such a miraculous item must be incredibly rare. And yet, Krillin gave it to me without hesitation. He must be a good person."
Moments later, the rest of Scar's squad returned, dragging their exhausted bodies behind them. One member, barely able to stay upright, stumbled forward, about to collapse. Scar rushed to catch him.
The injured soldier lifted his head weakly, offering a faint smile. "I'm fine, Captain." With those words, he promptly fainted.
Scar turned to Krillin with a slightly awkward expression, clearly hoping for another Senzu Bean but too embarrassed to ask outright.
Krillin didn't hesitate, tossing another bean his way. Scar caught it, his eyes brimming with gratitude.
Scar carefully pried open the unconscious teammate's mouth and placed the bean inside. "You'll be fine soon. I promise I'll get us all home safely."
"Crunch!"
The soldier blinked awake. He inspected his body, astonished. "My injuries… they're gone!"
The rest of the squad stared in disbelief, their jaws nearly hitting the floor.
Scar chuckled awkwardly. Such a miraculous occurrence was hard to explain, and he didn't dare ask Krillin for any more beans. Fortunately, the remaining squad members weren't too seriously injured and could recover slowly with herbal treatments.
The Perseus System's perimeter was surrounded by a ring of bright blue stars, making it a place where night never fell.
Perhaps because of the constant daylight, the planet's lush greenery thrived.
Scar's squad applied herbal treatments to their wounds and lay sprawled on the ground, gradually regaining their strength.
"Eat something, Krillin," Scar said, handing him a green, dough-like object.
Krillin instinctively wanted to refuse. His memories of the inky-black concoction he had been offered on Planet Dirt King were still fresh and unpleasant.
However, seeing Scar's squad eating the green substance with apparent enjoyment, Krillin reconsidered. The juices from the food dripped down their chins as they ate. With a gulp, Krillin swallowed his apprehension. "Might as well try it. It won't kill me."
Taking the green object from Scar, Krillin noted its soft texture, similar to the mochi from his past life.
He took a cautious bite. "Splat!" Green plant juice burst out.
"Hmm… sweet, refreshing, and thirst-quenching!" Krillin's eyes lit up. "This is actually pretty good!"
Seeing Krillin's reaction, Scar smiled knowingly and returned to his own meal.
The green food was surprisingly effective at soothing the stomach and left a pleasant herbal aftertaste.
Once everyone had eaten their fill, they sat together, chatting casually.
Krillin's deep knowledge of martial arts created an uplifting atmosphere. Scar's squad found his conversation engaging and refreshing.
Scar, meanwhile, observed Krillin silently. After much deliberation, he concluded that Krillin was a genuinely kind person. His actions and demeanor left little room for doubt.
"If I'm wrong and Krillin is aligned with some evil force," Scar thought grimly, "then it's simply fate that the Perseus System is doomed."
While Scar's teammates eagerly asked Krillin questions about martial arts, which he answered enthusiastically, Scar suddenly asked, "What brought you to the Perseus System?"
Krillin paused briefly, then smiled inwardly. "Looks like my efforts paid off."
"I came here for Perseus Stones," Krillin said directly. "I found fragments on my home planet, Earth, and they contained immense energy. They can accelerate my training."
Scar nodded, unsurprised by the answer. "That's the only reason anyone comes to the Perseus System. If you had tried to give me some other excuse, you would've lost my trust completely."
Krillin continued, "My home planet is also under threat from evil forces. I need to grow stronger to protect it. That's why I'm traveling through the universe, seeking the power I need."
Scar's respect for Krillin deepened. "So you came here to save your home. I admire your determination."
By now, Scar had fully lowered his guard around Krillin.
"The main planets of the Perseus System are occupied by invaders. After the supernova, Perseus Stones became incredibly rare," Scar explained with an apologetic tone.
Krillin nodded, unsurprised. "If these high-energy stones were abundant, even gods might intervene to prevent their misuse. Privilege often comes with a price."
