Chapter 124 The kiss Part 2
Tom felt as though the sculpture beckoned him and he couldn't resist anymore. He took a couple hesitant steps and placed himself at a respectful distance in front of the object of his adoration.
The stony man besides her stood proud and he had the looks of a well seasoned warrior. Tom didn't know why but just looking at him scared every fiber on his body, it made him feel as though he was an affair partner getting caught.
All the love the lady inspired on Tom, all the beauty, the elegance, everything good about the lady reflected on the sculpture of the man besides her in the perfect opposite making Tom feel an abject revulsion towards him. Where the woman looked lively and kind, he looked cold and unforgiving.
For just a minute he hesitated and lost himself in the eyes of the lady that seemed to beg for a kiss.
"Just one kiss..." Said Tom, his voice muffled by the dissonant choir of infighting occurring just behind him.
Uriel, who was already filling his pockets with the religious artifacts uncaring of the system notice he received calling him a [sacrilegious thief], gazed at the young man closing in to the statue of the lady with curiosity. Now that his greed had been sated, he was left with a void inside him he couldn't really understand.
Usually, he would have been far more interested in the statues than in old trinkets without any cultural value. Greed was always a part of his character, but it wasn't limited to the material value of artifacts.
"I think there was a lady of the Alamo. If that man is Crockett, it would only make sense that the statue next to him is that lady, but I don't recall her being a young beautiful woman." Uriel voiced his thoughts out loud as if expecting someone to listen to him, though everyone was busy fighting against each other. "Something is off, but I can't put my finger on it."
Uriel watched as Tom walked step by step closer to the statue and then the fight that broke out just a couple minutes ago shifted into cries of horror.
Though Tom didn't listen to his friends trying to prevent him from approaching the statue. He held his arms up in the air and leaned for a kiss, then a generalized cry of horror echoed in the basement as Tom fell spitting blood as he fell crumpled to the ground, his face mangled beyond recognition.
The instant Tom's lips had touched those of the Lady, Crockett's statue waved the hatchet in the air and hit him with the blunt stone killing him on the spot.
"The statue moved!" Cried Sam in disbelief.
The disfigured body had yet to touch the ground when Crockett's statue came back to its original stance, making it seem as though nothing happened. The only clue of its crime was the red blood painting its hatchet in red.
The imminent danger seemed to snap everyone out of their reverie and they took a fighting stance to face the threat at hand. Mark even went as far as activating his trait and his hand lit up in flames sending a fiery ball against the unmoving sculpture.
Mark's offensive skill was similar to that of his brother Ethan, though not as eye catching or powerful and the flaming missile disappeared after colliding with Crockett's sculpture without even leaving a scratch.
Uriel walked towards the statue with an inquisitive look on his face and Tina tried to stop him, but he wasn't paying any attention to her.
"This is good news."
"How can you say something like that! We just lost Tom!" Tina cried.
"I didn't mean to be rude, but... it seems we stumbled upon the dungeon's entrance. This statues seem to be guarding the entrance. Now everything makes sense." Uriel took his time examining the sculptures without a hint of fear. Those from Tina's party took him as a fool, while his own friends trusted he knew what he was doing.
"Crockett's statue only moved when Tom touched the other statue, but before that they didn't move and now they aren't moving either. This means the statues will only attack when touched... I think."
Sophie, Tina and Mary were distraught by Tom's passing, but Mark didn't seem to care much and he gazed at Uriel with malice, expecting him to be torn apart by the statues any minute now.
"Didn't you say the entrance was located at the Alamo fort?" Medusa asked.
"That's what I thought, but it would make sense if the entrance was located here. This whole city once was a Spanish mission to evangelize the locals, this means this church was most likely built before the fort. Also, now it makes sense why the cryptids can't get close to the church, it's because it has a protective barrier like the one I've seen before." Uriel explained.
"That would mean that the reason why vampires didn't come close near to the church has nothing to do with the ground being sacred or anything and it was just a coincidence. Maybe vampires aren't weak to sunlight as Luna said before" Medusa's remark seemed to throw Uriel into deeper thoughts.
Now that the place was silent once again, Luna was able to compose herself and she spoke softly. "On the contrary, that could explain why they built a church in the entrance to the dungeon. That would mean the fort is most likely the exit."
"That leaves just one question, how do we open the entrance?" Uriel pointed out.
"No, there's another more important question. Why did everyone start to behave so strangely. You became greedy, Sam was acting lewd, and Medusa..." Luna fell silent. The fact that she didn't show her emotions didn't mean they weren't there and she was hurting.
"I think it's related to whatever is sealed in the tower." Medusa said unsure. Her statement didn't come from rational thinking, but from a gut feeling that had been bothering her ever since she came close to the locked door. "But... something tells me we should leave it alone."
