Chapter 213 The first woman
The party stood in front of the rainbow for a while and no one tried to hide their fear, even the usually aloof Luna was evidently scare witless at the prospect of fighting a horror level cryptid. Jon, who was supposedly at the same level as a horror level cryptid, was also unsure about whether or not he could face whatever dangers lied ahead.
It was a known fact that a cryptid's fighting prowess could vary greatly depending on its size, abilities and also of its body. For instance, fighting head on against a crypti that relied on stealth rather than strength like a skinwalker, was nothing compared to facing an entity level nosferatu.
Uriel was well aware of that as his fight against the eclipse was nothing compared to the thought of facing against the swallow Chief. The gigantic air spirit was so imposing he couldn't see himself defeating something like that even after a thousand years.
However, wasting time was a luxury they couldn't afford and they made up their minds to step into the rainbow.
"Something's off." Sam pointed his index finger towards the rainbow. Somehow, the fact that the colors were inverted on this particular rainbow had gone over their heads. Enjoy exclusive adventures from My Virtual Library Empire
"Let's see..." Uriel grabbed a bunch of pebbles from the ground and scattered them in the air but contrary to his expectations, the pebbles went through the rainbow making them realize it wasn't solid like the other ones.
"That was close!" Nika, who was in front along with Jon, took a couple steps back.
"This isn't on David Crockett's diary." Jon muttered.
"So helpful!" Uriel sneered.
"I don't see you being of any help either, kid. Why don't you pull a trick from your butthole like usual?"
As much as Uriel despised Jon, he had to admit that he got carried away and his behavior was less than professional. He closed his eyes and tried to picture the man in front of him as the famous archaeologist instead of the thieving bastard he knew Jon to be, but it was proving particularly difficult because of the strong presence and the nostalgic feeling that flooded him.
"Are you... crying?" Medusa gasped.
"Look what you did! You made him cry! Apologize now!" Nika scolded Jon, who was as surprised as everyone else. "Luna, offer him your stuffed animal, I bet that would make him feel better."
"Uhm, no." Was all her reply.
"Guys, I'm ok, I don't know what got into me. Maybe it's allergies." Uriel lied through his teeth.
"Yeah, allergies." Sam laughed mockingly, it felt like a fitting payback for all the jokes Uriel made about him for marrying a cryptid.
"Maybe the pebbles went through the rainbow because they're not living beings." Luna proposed her theory.
"Why would that matter?"
"Because, uhm, I- I don't know." She shrugged.
Needless to say, that kind of reply was very uncharacteristic for the usually pragmatic Luna, though it brought back memories of her throwing Shaker at the totem just to see what would happen.
"No! Don't even think about it!" Medusa held on tight to the pixiephant she was still holding on her arms. The small cryptid was already healed from the wound it received before and was basking in the attention it received from the huntress.
"I don't want to risk it calling for a stampede here. If it was troublesome at the main island, it would definitely be the end of us right now." Uriel shook his head.
"Hey kid, you mentioned this being the happy hunting grounds and I agree with that but something is bothering me. There should be four gods in this world and we have yet to find any."
"That's because they're not supposed to be in this island. Judging by its location, It would be safe to assume that this is the place where humanity was created, the place where the first woman gave birth to her twins."
"That's interesting. I didn't consider that possibility. If that were the case, then this rainbow." Jon muttered with a hand on his chin, then he proceeded to step into the rainbow without so much of a warning. "Is meant for humans only." He said after standing on top of the rainbow.
"Was it necessary to take such a risk, uncle?" Medusa asked with a concerned look.
"No, no, I think that was pretty necessary."
After crossing the rainbow, they were able to confirm their suspicions that there weren't any cryptids on the island. Even with Sam's enhanced sight it was impossible to know for sure until they touched land because of the ancient trees that decorated the small island.
The third island was even more beautiful than the rest as it was also the only one with varied vegetation. Luna hurriedly took some samples to bring back with her, making sure to grab as many seeds as she could too. Those samples could potentially be even more valuable than orichalcum as they could provide new food or even medicine, though the chances were very slim.
Uriel suddenly felt a knot on his throat and he couldn't help but fall victim to the overflowing emotions and it was at that moment that he figured out the reason why. At the center of the island was a beautiful pond with incredibly beautiful shining lotus flowers and the statue of a woman stood at the middle of the pond as though floating on the water.
Finding such a sculpture would have frightened everyone now they knew about the living statue cryptids, but the magnificence and breathtakingly stunning beauty of the woman depicted made everyone lower their guard.
Uriel didn't part his eyes from the sculpture and he mindlessly walked towards it. After all, it wasn't just an imaginary person, he had seen her before, he had admired her beauty and had fallen in love with her. Uriel didn't react even when the water reached his waist, he simply walked towards the statue and extended his hand.
"Dearest one." He whispered, encompassed by the ominous sound of stone grinding against stone.
