Chapter 219 The book of the dead

"I left him weakened." Uriel said jokingly, though he had to admit he was impressed by Nika's combat abilities.

"Really? Not even a thank you?" Nika pouted.

"Fine, I'll give you a raise, how does double your current salary sound?"

"But you don't pay me anything!" Nika complained but Uriel ignored her altogether and focused on Medusa.

He tried to make her more comfortable and bought a pillow from his souvenir shop, but that was the extent of what he could do because he didn't have any knowledge in the medical field.

Now that the fight had ended Nika went to gather the soldiers that had ran away as soon as the fight against Ethan broke out. Although they belonged to the army, they had been rooting for Uriel since the beginning because they committed an act of treason by letting him pass against their orders.

Nika asked if there was a doctor among them, but all the field medics were now dead. The only remaining soldiers were combat experts which made sense considering all the threats they had to face.

Sam, Luna, Janett and Seiren came back an hour later, after rushing towards the next rainbow bridge. Thankfully, Medusa held on until they arrived and Luna took charge of her care.

"Idiots, you are idiots. Why didn't you cover her with your clothes?" Luna said angrily. It was one of the rare occasions where her emotions leaked.

"But she was burned, doesn't she need to cool off?"

"No! When someone gets burned they can't regulate their temperature, she needs to keep her heat and to hydrate." She raised her tone of voice in frustration and then she took an emergency blanket and hydrating serums. Thanks to her studies in the field of medicine she knew more or less what had to be done, though she didn't know the specifics about treating ascended.

Medusa's clothes had melted and were stuck to her but whatever flesh showed was scorched and cracked which made finding her veins impossible for Luna but not for Sam, whose trait allowed him to see much better than anyone to the point where, if he focused enough, he might even be able to see microscopic organisms.

Luna proceeded to treat her with the help of Seiren who acted as a nurse and after the second hydration serum Medusa started to gain consciousness, but Luna gave her some medicine to keep her asleep to keep her from feeling pain once her tissues regenerated. That amount of pain would be traumatic even for a hunter and she wanted to spare her friend from suffering.

Even if she didn't usually look like she cared, she always showed her love and appreciation towards them. In her own way, that is.

"Now that they're taking care of her, we need to figure out a way to keep the soldiers mouth shut. We can't let them spill the beans on what happened." Sam spoke to Uriel who swiftly understood what he meant.

"We can just kill them." Uriel shrugged displaying a complete disregard for human life, something that took his friend aback.

"Ha, ha! Nice joke!" Sam said trying to ease the soldiers who were close enough to listen, though he knew Uriel wasn't joking. "I think it would be on their best interest to remain silent, especially because they would be held accountable for siding up with us."

"We didn't side up with you! We simply let that murderous bastard pass because he would have killed us." A female soldier cried.

"Huh?" Uriel scowled after being called 'murderous bastard'.

"I mean... that Mister was, uhm, I mean..." Her tongue tripped on itself and she stuttered so bad she couldn't speak anymore.

"It seems the cat is out of the bag now and I have no choice but to explain things," Nika butted in. "This kid is actually a heavenly rank hunter and I paid off the officials who measured his energy signature so I could recruit him discretely."

That explanation made so much sense even Uriel's friends believed it, let alone the soldiers, though Seiren knew she was lying thanks to her trait. However, she chose to remain silent because it wasn't her place to say anything and that could only cause her trouble.

Several hours passed until Luna decided Medusa was stable enough to move and they started crossing the gate one by one, Uriel being the last among them just to make sure no loose ends were left behind.

He walked towards the forgotten figure of a hulking man, an evolved hunter with a very particular trait that allowed him to manipulate the vibrations in matter itself. Shaker had seen the whole fight, he saw how Uriel faced Ethan and how he managed to survive even after being scorched, he then proceeded to lay low faking to be injured.

"No, please, he made me do it." Shaker pleaded once he noticed Uriel was walking revolver in hand towards him.

"Did he force you to have fun with Medusa too?"

"I didn't do it, I swear!"

"I'm not here to argue," Uriel's tone of voice was colder than usual. "I'm here to kill you."

"Please, don't! I beg of you! I'm friends with Medusa, I have a wife and children. I even warned you about the colonel." Shaker regretted his actions, he regretted making fun of those who were weaker than him, he regretted siding up with Ethan, betraying Medusa but more than anything, he regretted not taking the chance to turn his life around after acquiring his trait.

All his hard work paid off and he was able to join the army, because of his diligent work he also rose up in the army in a matter of weeks. He now had money, respect and everything he ever dreamed of, but he wanted more.

The story about how he became a better person was nothing but a means to trick Medusa into trusting him. He cheated on his wife, neglected his children and became exactly like his abusive father, but now he regretted all of it.

For a glimpse of a second he closed his eyes and pictured himself as an honest friend to Uriel's group but he had only the time in between the click and the bang to dream about it.

[System notice] Shaker's soul has been added to the book of the dead.
