Chapter 324 From the sacred place

When the sun disappeared and the blanket of the stars covered the skies of Easter Island, the Aku Aku arose to the skies covering the cosmic lights with their unsettling figures amidst pained moans and screams that sounded as though they were being tortured.

They were made of shadows, but they had a definite shape that resembled that of men and women so famished their ribs poked through their skin, which caused a great impression on Uriel.

Up to that point he had looked down on them thinking he would be safe no matter what, only they were anything but harmless. It wasn't just their looks that unsettled him, but a tingling feeling on the back of his skull told him that those creatures might actually be able to kill him.

When the Aku Aku noticed them, they rushed towards them at an incredible speed, but they were met with the invisible protection provided by Ahu Akivi that acted as a barrier that kept them at a distance.

"This ground is sacred, they can't come in," Manu shouted, trying to make his voice stand out from the pained moans even though Uriel was an ascended and could hear him perfectly. More than many different creatures, the Aku Aku clashed like a shadowtide and then scattered in the air, but their numbers were too great and both men were now trapped by the evil spirits.

"the Moai will be busy chasing away the Aku Aku and you can sneak past them. If you can't help it, then you can try to kill a few, but try to avoid it at all costs."

"You don't expect me to go without anything to protect myself, do you?" Uriel said as extended the palm of his hand towards Manu.

"No way, you are not an adult. You can't wear the Mangai."

"Then, give me the Tahonga and I'll be considered an adult." Uriel beckoned at Manu with his hand, but Manu shook his head.

"You'd need to pass the trial of adulthood to receive it. I'm sorry but you'll have to go without."

"Are you being serious? You even warned me to not kill them if I could help it, but seeing the Aku Aku I think my chances are better fighting the moais in daylight." Uriel glared at the man besides him.

"Who said anything about you going alone?" Manu said as dropped his shirt on the ground. Then he started channeling flux until a pair of wings came from his back. "Follow me, Conti."

Manu walked outside the sacred grounds of Ahu Akivi and the Aku Aku didn't react to him. When it was Uriel's turn, though, the spirits immediately targeted him and he was forced to remain as close to Manu as possible, which was way closer than he would have preferred but being covered by Manu's wings was the only way to be safe from the spirits.

Uriel followed Manu without knowing the slightest idea of where they were going to since the spirits covered their sight entirely. He also felt uncomfortable thinking that his safety was entirely on another person's hands, more so a complete stranger at that, but then he realized that if he was by himself things would be way worse.

Meeting Manu was the best thing that could have happened to Uriel. Not only did he rescue him from the beach where he was turned into a blody pulp by the moais, but he also fed him and shared important information with him. Asking him to give up his artifacts was asking too much from someone that had already showed him a great deal of generosity and he felt the need to apologize.

"About before, I was really out of line by asking you to give me your artifacts. I just..."

"You're not gonna cry, are you? Just shut up and follow me, we can't afford to get lost," Manu scoffed, then he placed an arm to the side to stop Uriel from walking any further. "we're getting close."

Only then did he notice that Manu too was unable to see what was in front of them since he was looking at the ground the whole time.

'How does he even know where are we going?' Uriel questioned himself. With the Aku Aku constantly charging at Uriel, but being repelled by the Mangai on Manu's neck, it was impossible to see beyond arm's length. There were no landmarks and even if they found a road, they wouldn't be able to know the direction they were following, but then he remembered a fact from Ahu Akivi.

It was one of those useless pieces of knowledge he learned more as a trivia than for it's cultural worth. "Ahu Akivi was built to lign up perfectly with the cardinal directions." He muttered.

"Yes, it was, but I told you to shup up." Manu replied, unaware of Uriel's tendency to speak to himself. Then he crouched behind a rock and Uriel did the same.

The Aku Aku were still persisting on trying to break through the protection of the Mangai, but something was different. A small tremor could be heard from beneath them, it was almost like an earthquake but it was rythmic and it was growing stronger as time passed.

Then, a giant figure made out entirely of stone passed by them, swatting at the Aku Aku as though they were flies. The first Moai was followed by a second and then a third, they were similar to each other in both appearance and height, which was about four meters high.

Even though their endeavor was as pointless as the Aku Aku trying to attack the men, they kept swatting at the Aku Aku and showed no signs of stopping.

"What are we waiting for?" Uriel whispered.

"You really can't stay shut, can you." Manu placed his head on his hand as the earth began shaking, only this time it was faster and stronger until a moai carved out of red stone appeared.

"This is good, isn't it? He seems a lot stronger than the others, maybe he can defeat the Aku Aku." Uriel said in wishful thinking.

"No, you screwed up, he's coming to get us."
