Dying Light: Volatile Virus

Chapter 10: Deeper Understanding

After a moment, you are leaded to the floor where the laboratory of Dr. Zere is.

After entering the three of you, you see Dr. Zere working in researching on something, as has multiple things all over.

-"Good night, doc. Is it a bad moment?"

Dr. Zere looks up briefly, adjusting his glasses as he processes your arrival. His tone is calm but focused as he continues working.

Dr. Zere: "Ah, Marco. Not a bad moment at all. In fact, your timing might be perfect—I've been preparing to dive deeper into your unique condition."

Jade crosses her arms, her tone sharp as she speaks to Dr. Zere, glancing at you occasionally.

Jade: "You should've seen the chaos downstairs. People are terrified. Marco showing up like this—it's not just panic; it's a threat. He's evolving into... something worse, and if this keeps up, I don't know how much longer he can stay here without people turning against him."

Crane sighs, running a hand through his hair, his tone softer but still serious.

Crane: "She's not wrong, Doc. Marco's changing fast, and it's getting harder to keep things under control. But he's still himself—for now. We need to figure out how to handle this before things spiral even more."

Dr. Zere looks between the two of them, his expression thoughtful but calm as he gestures for them to lower their voices.

Dr. Zere: "I understand your concerns, but let's not jump to conclusions. Marco is indeed changing, but his mind remains intact. That gives us time to study his condition—and perhaps even learn how to stabilize it."

-"Doc, anything about that second blood test? In the first one yesterday, you told me how the virus was changing my blood or something, and about me having 24 hours left. How is going to be this time?"

Dr. Zere adjusts his glasses, turning to face you fully, his expression serious but measured.

Dr. Zere: "Ah, yes, the second test. I've been analyzing your latest sample, and... the results are fascinating, though troubling."

He pauses briefly, choosing his words carefully.

Dr. Zere: "The virus is still mutating within you, but it's not following the typical pattern of infection. Instead of fully overtaking your body, it's integrating with your physiology—enhancing it in some ways, while destabilizing it in others."

He sighs, his tone lowering.

Dr. Zere: "As for a timeline... it's difficult to say. You're no longer on a predictable clock like before. Your condition is unprecedented, Marco."

-"Well, I'll leave using the window. I have other things to do."

You say while leaving the room, walking to the big window of the hallway in the floor, and jump through the space where is already broken. You easily slip your way down, but slowly.

After a big while, you continue slipping down, until you see yourself enough down to jump and land. Once you landed, you walk to the entrance, where you see a Volatile standing.

Must be the same one, after all, is what you told it to do, go to the Tower.

You walk closer, and the Volatile looks at you.

-"Alright, explain. Why your... 'Home' was filled with corpses?"

Volatile: "That's intimate. But are also our food."

-"Intimate? What do you mean?"

Volatile: "We need alive bodies for reproduce ourselves, happy?"

-"Reproduce? You're not aliens, what are you talking about?"

Volatile: "Corpses are only our food, while alive bodies are used to reproduce ourselves. The process is different, but is still something intimate to say."

-"Alright, I understand that. But... How can I... Talk with you?... Or at least what seems to be."

Volatile: "Because is our own language. The virus created us, is like our mother."

-"So... Until any alive not infected becomes infected... Will not understand your language?"

Volatile: "Not only not infecteds, but also who are infected, doesn't understand our language. We talk normally in our way, but no one else understands us."

-"... And how am I understanding you... Despite being barely?"

Volatile: "You are infected, but in a very early stage of what we are. Your process changed, but you are one of us. From our view, you are like our child, still maturing and growing to be like us, once you have matured."

-"That is... I guess that explains some things. Can you help me with something?"

Volatile: "With what? I need to find a new home to live in, thanks to you."

-"I know, and I'm sorry, but you have to understand. But I'm sure with time we'll get along. And I need help to capture someone who is the leader of a dangerous not infected group of high amount."

Volatile: "You are really asking me to help you destroy a not infected home nest?"

-"No, just help me to capture the leader. Once the head is captured, the body, as all the others, will stop."

Volatile: "... Alright, I will help. But then we will talk more seriously about your behavior."

-"I'm not a kid."

Volatile: "For us, you are. After all, you are maturing, in your growing process to mature. We don't see your body as you do, We see your progress with the growth of the virus. If the virus matures, you mature. But for now, you are merely a child to us, so I will look aside only for this time, since you are still thinking incorrectly, and not properly."

You start leading the Volatile, in your search for Rais' base, by using your vision to see where the most red trails are. But in your way, you hear the Volatile calling, and slowly, you notice more Volatiles joining, starting to follow you.

After a big moment, you stop in the roof of the nearest building in front of Rais' base.
