Chapter 7: Unexpected Encounters

-[Reanimated Catacombs]-

The damp, decrepit corridors of the Reanimated Catacombs echoed with the sounds of battle. Hoshigari and his party were deep into their quest, hacking through waves of undead monstrosities.

[Current Quest: D-Rank - Defeat 20 Reanimated Raging Corpses (9/20 Defeated)]

(From here on, Reanimated Raging Corpses will be referred to as RRCs.)

Hoshigari swiftly raised his Ebonflame Desert Eagle, exhaling as he squeezed the trigger. Three consecutive shots rang out in perfect rhythm—each round piercing 3 RRC's rotting skulls each.

"Hella nice! But save some mats for us, boss!" Makidon teased, beheading one RRC with a powerful swing of her axe before slamming her greatshield into another, sending it crashing into a cracked stone pillar.

Nearby, Noctatsu engaged an RRC with deadly precision. He leaped into the air, launching his Triple Aqua Shuriken with a flick of his wrist. The enchanted projectiles sliced through the undead's decayed body, creating a perfect opening. Noctatsu flipped midair, angling toward his target, ninjato drawn. With a single downward thrust, he drove his blade deep into the RRC's skull. He then used his Poison Smoke Blow Skill as poisonous smoke began to swirl inside his mouth, as he blowed out a thick, venomous cloud directly into the creature's face as Noctatsu then unstuck his blade as he then jumped and flipped away, the RRC's body twitched before going still and then collapsing.

Sushi Slice, her katana at the ready, spun gracefully, severing an RRC's head in one fluid motion. She pivoted, shifting into her next attack—a Tempest Kick—her foot colliding with another RRC's gut, sending it flying back. Without missing a beat, she slashed horizontally, cleaving another in half.

"You better keep up, Maki!" Sushi called, a smirk on her face. "Before Hoshigari, Noctatsu, and I finish the job without you."

"I CAN'T HELP IT, SUSHI! I AM A TANK! I DON'T DO SPEED! NO—ACTUALLY, I CAN'T!" Makidon huffed, her heavy armor clanking as she comically bashed an RRC's head repeatedly with her greatshield. With one final, thunderous impact, the undead crumpled lifelessly.

"There are [Hover-Jet Boots] that might help with that," Sushi said, wiping her blade clean. "They're cyber-tech boots that pair well with a greatshield. Hard to master, though. Move kinda like roller skates."

Before Makidon could reply, an RRC lunged at Sushi from behind.

"WATCH OUT, SUSHI!" Makidon shouted—

FWOOSH—BANG!

A bullet whizzed past Sushi's ear, striking the RRC between the eyes. The corpse froze before collapsing with a sickening thud.

Sushi turned to see Hoshigari lowering his Ebonflame, a casual smirk playing on his lips.

"Nice save, boss!" Makidon grinned.

"Thanks for that, Hoshigari," Sushi said, relief in her voice.

"You're welcome! Also, Hoshigari's kinda long, ain't it? Just call me Hoshi," he said, activating Fixer Skill: Radius Circuit Restoration. Glowing green circuits spread outward from his feet through the ground, pulsing as they restored his entire party's health.

"Alright then... Hoshi~!" Sushi chimed, her bright smile matching her tone.

"Nope. Still callin' ya boss, boss!" Makidon declared, flashing a wide grin.

Hoshigari groaned, shaking his head. "Jeez…"

"Anyway, that's twenty down. Looks like we've completed this quest for the sixth time in a row. Let's check our spoils!" Hoshi announced, stretching his arms.

"Aye aye!" Makidon cheered.

"Indeed!" Sushi agreed, already scrolling through her inventory.

As the party emerged from the grim depths of the Reanimated Catacombs, the stench of decay still clung to their gear. Hoshigari stretched, rolling his shoulders with a satisfied smirk.

"Welp, I'm done on my end. How 'bout you guys?"

"Good here!" Makidon grinned, dusting off her greatshield.

"Same as well!" Sushi Slice chimed in, flicking the last remnants of corpse residue from her blade.

Makidon slung her shield over her back. "Got the mats for forgin' a better greatshield. Thinkin' of pickin' up those jet boots you mentioned, Sushi."

Sushi Slice nodded. "I gathered the materials I need for crafting a new blade. Shall we head to Gloamhaven's Bazaar Market?"

Hoshigari tapped his Digi-Map. "Checked before you guys arrived—Gloamhaven's version of the Bazaar Market is called the Twilight Tradepost. You two find a weaponsmith, I'll hit up a gunsmith."

"Agreed." Sushi Slice adjusted her sheath.

Makidon cracked her knuckles. "Alrighty, let's book it outta this undead-infested, stinky hellhole!"

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

As they entered Gloamhaven's bustling Twilight Tradepost, the air shifted from damp crypt staleness to the scent of burning metal, exotic spices, and arcane energy. They exchanged casual banter before splitting up, each setting off toward their respective shops.

Hoshigari, and Noctatsu soon arrived at Deadeye Ballistics, a renowned gunsmith in the district.

[Credits: 14,740]

The shop was a fortress of firepower, its dark oak walls reinforced with metal plating. A large iron sign, riddled with bullet holes, hung above the entrance. Inside, racks of firearms lined the reinforced display cases, while blueprint-covered walls showcased intricate schematics of custom weapons. The scent of gunpowder lingered in the air, punctuated by the rhythmic clang of a hammer against steel.

Behind the counter stood a grizzled man, broad-shouldered and scarred, surrounded by half-assembled guns and glowing arcane-infused rounds. He glanced up, his piercing gaze locking onto Hoshigari.

"A new customer? Welcome to Deadeye Ballistics," he greeted, his voice thick with a Scandinavian accent. "Name's Ivar 'Deadeye' Grimm, but ye can call me Ivar. What'll it be? Lookin' to buy or upgrade?"

"Firearm upgrade, please."

Ivar stroked his beard. "Aye. Let's see what we're workin' with."

Hoshigari unequipped his Black Barrel Hand-Held Cannon, placing it on the counter.

Ivar's eyes gleamed with recognition. "Ah! One of Maeve's classics! Good eye! But if ye were lookin' for a standard upgrade, ye could've done it through yer Inventory Menu. Pay the required creds, bam—upgraded."

Hoshigari smirked. "I see. How about a fusion upgrade?"

Ivar chuckled. "Now we're talkin'. Let's see what materials ye got."

Hoshigari emptied his inventory onto the counter. Ivar examined the collection with an approving nod.

"Not bad. Hmm… with 3 Storm of the Bog's Lightning Sharp Claws, 10 Bones, 20 Corpse Blood, and 10 Shattered Rock Golem Chunks, we can fuse this lil' beauty into somethin' even deadlier. She'll no longer be a classic, but she'll be an absolute beast. The result? [Howitzer], an Epic Rarity Hand-Held Cannon. Price tag? 4,350 Creds. Ye got the creds, friend?"

Hoshigari grinned. "Yeah. Let's do it."

Ivar cracked his knuckles. "Alright, let's get to work."

With a snap of his fingers, the materials lifted into the air, encircling the Black Barrel. A swirling vortex of energy formed, crackling with raw mana. As the fusion began, Ivar raised his hammer high and brought it down with a deafening clang.

A blinding light engulfed the shop.

Noctatsu shielded his eyes. "Seriously, these bright lights again?"

"Same," Hoshigari muttered.

As the light faded, Hoshigari beheld his newly transformed weapon—[Howitzer (Epic)], a masterpiece of destruction.

Ivar folded his arms, satisfied. "Payment first, friend."

Hoshigari nodded and transferred the credits.

[Credits: 10,390]

Ivar grinned. "Pleasure doin' business. Come again, friend—yer always welcome at Deadeye Ballistics."

Hoshigari smirked. "Thanks, Mr. Ivar."

Ivar laughed heartily. "Just Ivar, lad! Haha!"

As Hoshigari admired his newly upgraded weapon, Noctatsu couldn't help but comment.

"I feel like your new weapon is certainly a force to be reckoned with!" Noctatsu remarked, eyeing the gleaming barrel of the Howitzer.

"I feel the same," Hoshigari replied, gripping the weapon tightly. "And from what Ivar said, I can upgrade my guns, gear, and equipment through my inventory menu. Let's test that out..."

[Inventory Menu]

[Ebonflame]

Level 8 → 9: 3,000,000 Credits

Hoshigari let out a sigh. "I guess I can't afford to upgrade Ebonflame for now... How about Howitzer?"

He crossed his arms in thought. "I could upgrade Howitzer now… but maybe I should wait until I have enough creds to reach level 5 at least."

Closing his inventory menu, he exhaled and placed his hands on his hips. "Probably time to meet back with Sushi Slice and Makidon..." Noctatsu gave a quick nod, and the two began heading toward their meeting spot at the town's center fountain.

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

[Five Minutes Later...]

Hoshigari groaned, shifting his weight impatiently. "Ugh... what's taking them so long?"

Noctatsu, sitting on the edge of the fountain, continued sharpening his blade in silence.

"Agh! Screw it! I'll just text them."

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

[EAO Group Chat]

Hoshigari: YO! I JUST UPGRADED MY CANNON, WHAT'S TAKIN SO LONG U 2!?

Makidon: mb just bought new armor, those [Hover-Jet Boots], and even a newly refined greatshield.

Sushi Slice: Apologies, I forged a new katana that deals solid damage while also inflicting minor poison and bleed effects.

Hoshigari: Cool, when r u 2 getting here?

Makidon: That's the bad news… I forgot to do my homework, so I gtg do it ;3.

Sushi Slice: And my family decided we're eating out today.

Hoshigari: bruh.

Makidon: My bad, sorry boss, will make it up 2 u once I get back on.

Sushi Slice: Apologies.

Hoshigari: It's cool, see you once you guys are back on.

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

Hoshigari sighed deeply, rubbing the back of his head. "Guess I waited for nothing... C'mon, Noct, we're grinding levels and XP on our own."

Noctatsu hopped up, sheathing his ninjato with a sharp click. "Alright!" He leaped onto Hoshigari's shoulder, balancing with ease. "What quest will you take on this time, Sir Hoshi?"

Hoshigari exhaled, staring at the quest board ahead. "To be honest with you, I ain't sure either..."

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

As Hoshigari and Noctatsu wandered through the town, something caught Hoshigari's eye, a certain path leading eventually atop a mountain as he checked his Digi-Map and said "Huh... weird... this path isn't registered on the Digi-Map...

"Huh... weird... this path isn't registered on the Digi-Map," Hoshigari muttered, his brow furrowing as he examined his device.

"Do you want to check it out?" Noctatsu asked, his small frame perched on Hoshigari's shoulder.

"Piqued my interest, to be honest."

The two pressed forward, their footsteps crunching against the fallen leaves and twigs. The deeper they went, the more unnatural the silence became. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath.

"I have a bad feeling about this place, Sir Hoshi," Noctatsu whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.

"No kidding, Noct. This feels like a horror movie."

"What is a movie?"

"Forget it."

Then—

CRACK!

Something dropped from the trees right in front of them, hitting the ground with a dull thud.

"AAAAAAAAAAAA!" Both Hoshigari and Noctatsu screamed in unison, jumping back in alarm.

Lying before them was what appeared to be a lifeless body. Hoshigari cautiously approached, his hand inching towards his weapon.

"A dead body?!" Noctatsu exclaimed

Before he could investigate further, the figure groaned and pushed itself upright, rubbing its head.

"Oww... my head hurts..."

Hoshigari blinked. "Oh... it's just a guy. You good, man? Why were you hanging up a tree?"

The figure, now fully standing, dusted himself off and grinned sheepishly. "Oh... uhh... no apparent reason? Anyways... it's so great to finally meet you, Mr. Hoshigari!" The stranger exclaimed, suddenly grabbing Hoshigari's hand and shaking it frantically.

"Uhh... yeah? Who are you?"

"Ah, yes! I am your greatest and biggest fan! You can call me Yukinox, or Yu for short!"

Hoshigari's eyes widened in realization. "Wait... You're that streamer that recorded me..." His voice tensed.

"Wait... biggest fan?! And why do you record me and upload it on the web?!"

"Yes! You're very popular! Your EAO reputation is steadily rising! And I've followed your journey from other VR MMORPGs as well... Melee Master Hoshigari!"

Hoshigari groaned. "Oh god... please forget about that old nickname. I'm trying to play differently now in EAO."

Yukinox chuckled. "I can see that! And you're doing great! I'm honestly impressed that the Melee Master has adapted so well to a ranged combat playstyle. That's why I record your gameplay and upload it—I want the world to see your raw skill and pure awesomeness!"

Hoshigari sighed, rubbing his temples. "Too much info... Anyway, Yu, what's your class, sub-class, Exo Ability, and why are you here?"

Yukinox perked up. "Oh yes! My class is Level 22 Mecha Rider, my sub-class is Level 16 Longsword Warrior, and my Exo Ability is the Legendary Tier 'Glacial Rewrite'. As for my reason for being here... I want to be your friend and join your party!"

Hoshigari raised an eyebrow. "Friend? Why though?"

"Because you inspire me! Your playstyle, your skills—I know I'd have an amazing time playing alongside you!"

Hoshigari studied him for a moment. "Huh... alright. You seem harmless."

"Totes harmless!" Yukinox grinned.

Noctatsu squinted. "You sure, sir?"

"Yeah, he seems safe enough."

Turning back to Yukinox, Hoshigari folded his arms. "Alright, Yu. I'll be your friend. But you'll have to prove your trust first."

"Really?! Oh! You won't regret it, I swear!" Yukinox bounced in excitement.

A notification appeared.

[Player Yukinox has sent you a friend request.]

Hoshigari smirked, intrigued. "A Mecha Rider, huh? Wonder how that'll play out..."

[Yukinox - Friend Request Accepted]

"Now invite me to your party! I'm sure I'd be a huge help with whatever you're doin' right now!" Yukinox beamed.

"Alright, alright. Chill out."

[Sent Player Yukinox a Party Invite]

[Yukinox has accepted your Party Invite]

Hoshigari opened the party menu, glancing at the levels.

-[Hoshigari's Party]-

[Hoshigari {Leader} (Level 17)]

[Noctatsu {Familiar} (Level 14)]

[Yukinox (Level 25)]

"Level 25, huh? Impressive." Hoshigari thought before continuing down the path.

Yukinox followed closely. "Sooo… what are we doing?"

"Just following this path."

"You know where it leads?"

"Nope. That's why I'm following it."

"Oh..." Yukinox blinked before noticing Noctatsu. "Oh! Hello! Nice to meet you! I'm Yukinox! You can call me Yu!"

Noctatsu eyed him curiously. "Uhh, yes. I'm Noctatsu. You may call me Noct. I'm Sir Hoshigari's loyal Shinogama familiar."

Yukinox grinned. "Well, nice to meet you, Noct!"

As the three ventured deeper into the fog, an eerie presence loomed ahead, and the once-quiet path began to hum with an unsettling energy

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

As they trekked up the mist-shrouded mountain, the path twisted and crumbled beneath their feet, giving an eerie sensation that it hadn't been walked on in ages. When they finally reached the summit, an unsettling sight unfolded before them—a vast, sprawling graveyard stretching far beyond the mountain's peak. The sheer scale defied reason.

-[Cemetery of the Restless One]-

"What the hell..." Hoshigari muttered, eyes scanning the endless rows of tombstones.

"A graveyard? But this place is larger than the actual mountain... How?" Noctatsu's fur bristled as he cautiously observed their surroundings.

As Noctatsu turned back toward the entrance, his eyes widened in horror. "THE ENTRANCE IS GONE!"

"What?!" Hoshigari spun around, his stomach twisting. The path they had walked mere moments ago had vanished into the mist. "No... that's impossible."

Noctatsu leapt off Hoshigari's shoulder, cautiously navigating the tombstones. Meanwhile, something caught Hoshigari's attention—just ahead, a lone figure slouched over a gravestone. He approached slowly, his grip tightening on his weapons.

It was Yukihikari—Nozomi Nozuki, the Rank 4 player.

"What's the Ranked 4th doing here?" Hoshigari asked nonchalantly.

Yukihikari turned her head, only to freeze in shock. "WHAAAAA?! WHAT!? WHY IS AKITO HERE?!" She thought in a panic

She stumbled backward, landing on her rear. Her mind raced with questions, but before she could react further, Hoshigari extended his hand. "My bad for scaring you. Here, lemme help you up."

She hesitated but took his hand. As she stood, a strange sense of familiarity washed over him. "Huh... odd. Feels like deja vu."

Yukinox popped up from behind Hoshigari, peering over his shoulder. "Hey, you found somethin'? Oh—it's a someone! Wait, isn't that the Ranked 4th?! What's she doing here?"

"No clue," Hoshigari replied.

Yukihikari's mind reeled at the sight of Yukinox. "Huh? Yukinox?! YUKINOX?! THE STREAMER?! WHY IS HE WITH HOSHIGARI?!"

Noctatsu hopped back onto Hoshigari's shoulder. "Sir, I can't find the exit or any explanation for this graveyard."

Yukihikari's eyes darted to the small creature. "Ah, that's his familiar..."

Hoshigari turned back to her. "So, Ms. 4th, do you know what this place is?"

She took a breath to steady herself. "This is a secret, unregistered area. You've heard of the mysterious flood fog at night, right?"

"Mhm."

"This place is connected to it. My clan leader sent me to investigate and, if possible, fix the issue. If I succeed, the town will reward me handsomely—something that could greatly benefit my clan."

"Respectable," Hoshigari thought. "Alright." He then replied.

"Yo! Hoshigari! I found somethin'!" Yukinox called out.

Hoshigari and Yukihikari walked toward the center of the graveyard, where Yukinox stood before an ornate gravestone.

"Vhalzakyr?" Hoshigari read aloud.

Yukinox traced the inscription. "It says: 'By the blood of the fallen, by the wails of the damned... Let the chains shatter, let the veil tear... Rise once more, Vhalzakyr, the Restless Revenant, and wake up once more.' Sounds like some kind of—"

>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---<<<>>>---

The ground trembled violently. A deafening crack split through the cemetery as Vhalzakyr's grave quaked with unnatural force. As they jumped away from the grave.

"IT'S VOICE ACTIVATED?!" Hoshigari exclaimed.

As he equipped his Ebonflame Desert Eagle and his Howitzer Hand-Held Cannon

And Noctatsu hopped off from his shoulder and onto a tombstone and drew out his ninjato

"ZENITH!" Yukinox shouted. His sleek Mecha materialized behind him, its Absolute Zero Ice Armor plating glistening. He dematerialized into the cockpit, becoming one with the machine. Twin boosters on it's back and feet lifted him off the ground as he conjured a longsword of ice. "Ignis Veil!" As Fire arcana surged through the blade, mixing with ice until the flames burned a brilliant frost-blue. "Frostflame Blade!"

Yukihikari's familiar, Glacielle, flitted in front of her. "Glacielle! Spear form!" At her command, a vortex of snow enveloped the pixie, solidifying into the elegant spear, Shiverthorn.

A system notification rang in their ears, sending a chill down Yukihikari's spine.

[YOU HAVE INITIATED THE QUEST]

Yukihikari's eyes widened. Hoshigari, Yukinox, and even Noctatsu were equally stunned.

[UNIQUE WORLD BOSS ENCOUNTER - VHALZAKYR, THE RESTLESS REVENANT]

From the earth, a towering, spectral knight erupted. Teal ghostly energy crackled around its form as jagged chains snaked along its armor. A massive ethereal greatsword materialized in its grasp, humming with raw power. It raised its head, hollow red bursting eyes burning with ancient fury. With a guttural roar, it swung its blade, releasing a shockwave of dark energy, rattling tombstones and sending an oppressive force surging toward them.

Hoshigari gritted his teeth. "No doubt about it... This thing's in a whole different league."

Yukinox questioned in awe. "A Unique World Boss... Huh?..."

Yukihikari tightened her grip on Shiverthorn. "I can't believe it... after all this time, a Unique World Boss... has finally appeared!"
