Chapter 18: Color me surprised
Once the doors closed, Athena turned to Noah and gazed at him with worry. Her concern reached him, and he smiled at her.
He said, "Eleonora told me the trials are like a jungle, at least the first trials."
Athena agreed. "Nothing is established here. No laws from other worlds hold authority, and people lose themselves in newfound strength. It is amazing that thou dost restrain thyself, dear. Many will see thee as weak, but Eleonora, I, and those who are truly strong see how wonderful that is. I despise people who do not value life, so I am growing much fonder of thee. Ahem. Thou art also strong, dear, for protecting Eleonora so many times. She would be worried if thou killed someone in her sleep."
"Thanks, Athena," Noah said, nodding.
He felt happy that Athena understood him, even though they had only been together for a few hours. She must have seen many people, so her experience helped her know what he really desired. Like Eleonora, she was a great support.
"It is a wife's duty to uphold her husband's chosen path. Though our marriage is distant, let me indulge in the thought and support thee like this," Athena murmured, blushing because it was not easy to talk about marriage with him.
Noah pulled her into his arms. "I'd be a fool to mind that. You lost a lot of your prime years, so try anything you want with me. From being a girlfriend, to a wife, or even a secret lover. Whatever you want, I'm here. Any ideas?"
"I do," Athena said, nodding.
"Then let's wait until we leave this place. It's rotten and crawling with disgusting people," Noah whispered into her ear, and she nodded.
They slowly let each other go and looked around. Noah's control over Nocturne and the Tenebris Spiders' Robes continued to grow. He never expected to make a cocoon out of them, but that cocoon now shielded Eleonora from all harm. It reminded him of his awakening, making him appreciate his ability even more. He wanted to evolve it further.
Recalling his awakening, Athena smiled at the black cocoon and scooped Nocturne into her arms.
"I can use Fangs and Nocturne at once, but for Venom or Tongue, Nocturne has to take its full form," Noah explained.
Not only did the Tenebris Spiders' Robes become stronger, but he could also use Nocturne's enhanced senses with his twin daggers to grow even more powerful.
"Is Nocturne limited to a serpent shape?" Athena asked.
Noah had no clue. Perhaps if he activated his link with Eleonora's Universe Library, he could find out.
Athena smiled. "I believe thou may combine Nocturne with thy robes. If Nocturne transforms into spider form, thou could claim a territory in battle. A defensive area."
Noah clenched his fists. "I'll do it."
He was surprised by her idea and wanted to impress her. Given how he treasured his Tenebris Spiders' Robes, her suggestion excited him.
Right then, someone knocked at the door.
—
"These two made everyone agree to kick you out of the mansion," Bart told Noah. It did not surprise him much.
"Color me surprised," Noah said.
"They claim they were only searching for ghouls to protect everyone. When my companion mentioned Athena joined you only recently, they seized the chance to say she does not deserve the mansion's supplies."
This explained why Bart came alone. His best friend must have felt too ashamed to face Noah and Athena.
"This convinced the others that you are the bullies trying to reduce the competition," Bart said, looking down.
That meant a group of at least fifteen people would soon try to force Noah, Eleonora, and Athena out by any means necessary. The thought of that trouble made Noah clench his hands.
He calmed down and said, "Thanks for telling me, Bart. Stay with them and finish the trial. Good luck in your world."
"Eh… but… thanks, Noah," Bart replied, nodding.
He was weaker than Noah and could not leave with them. It was better for him and his friend to remain with the larger group.
After Bart left, Noah turned to the War Goddess. "I'm growing stronger with every challenge. Let's treat leaving this mansion as another test and aim to clear the trial ahead of everyone."
Athena looked at the window. "I have a question. If ghouls were banging on every window and door here, wouldst thou still leave?"
Noah shook his head. "No."
Athena smiled. "That is a good answer."
Eleonora spoke from inside the cocoon. "Night Elves went extinct because they finally chose to leave the forest instead of fighting for their spot. If you show too much mercy, you might follow in their footsteps, Noah. We are asking these questions because we want you to stay the person we love."
As the cocoon unwrapped, Eleonora peeked out and smiled at Athena. "Thank you for looking after him."
"Thou needst not thank me for that," Athena said.
"Mmm, I wanted to anyway," Eleonora replied, leaping from the bed and standing between them. "Let's grab blankets, food, and everything we can use, then leave with a bang."
She smirked mischievously.
Noah patted Athena's pink hair. "Looks like you will become a thief, too."
"Welcome aboard, Athena," Eleonora said with a sly grin.
"Never in my years did I expect to be a thief," Athena chuckled. "Yet if it stays in our family, it does not sound too bad. I only hope our mischief remains hidden."
"No worries. The universe is huge," Eleonora said, rubbing her hands and ready for fun.
