Chapter 33: The Golden Eyes of Dispelling Evil
Chapter 33: The Golden Eyes of
Dispelling Evil
The sun was warm and the breeze was gentle, but the atmosphere outside the city lord’s mansion was as still as death. Even the birds seemed unable to bear the oppressive tension and flew away in flocks.
When Gu uttered those four words, some were confused, some were scared, and some were in disbelief. You Su instantly became the focal point of everyone’s attention.
“Deacon Gu, what do you mean?” You Su asked calmly, his tone as light as the breeze.
Gu didn’t answer. Instead, he stared intently at the young man, his gaze sharp and imposing.
Seeing this, City Lord Liu quickly smoothed his sleeves and stepped between the two of them, saying:
“Senior Brother Gu, there must be some misunderstanding… This child has a gentle and law-abiding nature. He grew up in Chuyun City and rarely left the city gates. How could he be tainted by demons? Perhaps, Senior Brother Gu… could you check again?”
Upon hearing this, the golden light in Gu’s eyes faded slightly. He glanced at the visibly troubled City Lord Liu, his expression cold and disdainful:
“Do you not trust me or the Golden Eyes?”
City Lord Liu clenched his teeth, took a step forward, and bowed his head respectfully:
“Please, Senior Brother Gu, try once more.”
Gu snorted coldly, thinking that his junior brother had been away from the sect for too long and had forgotten the horrors of Divine Mountain Prison, where demonic cultivators writhed in agony under the gaze of the Golden Eyes.
At the same time, he felt a pang of pity for this aging junior brother who refused to accept his fate. Gu knew that if a demon was found within the city lord’s jurisdiction, the city lord would bear the greatest responsibility. If the young man was truly a demon, his junior brother’s dream of breaking through to the next realm with the resources of the Mystic Firmament Sect would be nothing but a pipe dream.
With a flick of his sleeve, as if to make City Lord Liu face reality, Gu said indifferently:
“The reason I had you all come forward one by one was to fulfill the third purpose of my visit – to see if any of you have lost your minds and become servants of evil gods!”
“My golden eyes can provoke the anger, greed, and evil thoughts hidden in the hearts of those who meet my gaze. Even the most righteous hero would squirm under their scrutiny. This is because anyone who has not yet attained immortality will harbor anger and desire-it’s human nature. Ordinary cultivators, as long as they are not deeply corrupted or lack self-control, can at least maintain their composure. But if someone is tainted by demons, his evil thoughts will increase infinitely. When they meet my gaze, those thoughts will burst out like fire through paper, revealing their true nature under the clear sky.”
The cultivators finally understood why they had felt such dark impulses when they met Gu’s gaze earlier. They were grateful that City Lord Liu had managed the city so well, keeping it peaceful and free of demons, which had allowed them to avoid making fools of themselves.
“Even though the Golden Eyes are powerful, there are two types of people who can remain unaffected when standing in front of me.”
Everyone’s attention was immediately drawn back to Gu’s words.
“The first type is those born with hearts as pure as mirrors, untainted by any impurity. These individuals are seeds sown by the heavens, projections of divinity in the mortal world. They do not harbor any evil, and even the deepest darkness cannot corrupt them. In the past ten thousand years, such people can be counted on one hand. But in this era, our Mystic Firmament Sect has such a divine maiden!”
Gu’s tone was filled with pride, and the cultivators were stunned, unable to believe that they lived in the same era as such a legendary figure. They began to whisper among themselves, speculating about this divine maiden.
“Junior Brother Liu, are you trying to tell me that there is another pearl in the Central Realm Continent who is hidden in your Chuyun City?”
“This…” City Lord Liu was at a loss for words, glancing at You Su and shaking his head slightly.
“If it’s not a hidden gem…” Gu sneered, slowly walking toward You Su.
He leaned down until his face was just a fist’s distance from You Su’s, staring directly into his eyes. His voice was cold and dangerous: “Then it can only mean that this person harbors a demon that even I cannot see through!”
Hearing these words, everyone’s heart sank. They looked at the thin figure of the young man in disbelief.
Only City Lord Liu, his head bowed, hid a slight upward curve of his lips.
In this tense moment where even the drop of a needle could be heard, You Su suddenly chuckled. His laughter was as clear as the wind, but to the others, it was chilling, as if he was putting on a brave face after being exposed.
Gu also laughed, his laugh cold and confident.
“What is Deacon Gu laughing at?” You Su asked, still smiling.
“I’m laughing at the fact that even after hiding in this nameless place among nameless people, you cannot escape your destiny of being purged.”
“But that’s not what I’m laughing at,” You Su said, his smile fading as he spoke calmly. “I’m laughing because even someone as respected as Deacon Gu could be fooled by my unintentional trick.”
Gu raised an eyebrow, standing tall and looking down at the young man as if waiting for him to continue.
“I believe there is a third type of person who can meet your gaze without reacting.”
“Who?”
“Blind people,” You Su said, unable to suppress his smile. “From what you’ve said, the key to the effect of the Golden Eyes is eye contact. But I’ve been blind since birth. My eyes have never seen light, and if even the sun can’t penetrate them, I doubt that your golden light can either”.
“Blind?”
Gu’s face was filled with shock and suspicion as he carefully examined You Su’s clear eyes. Sensing his gaze, You Su remained still, allowing Gu to observe.
After a long while, Gu finally confirmed that You Su’s gaze was indeed unfocused, like two deep, dark pools of water that never quite aligned.
Gu wasn’t unaware that the Golden Eyes were ineffective against the blind. However, even in the Mystic Firmament Sect, the largest sect on the Central Realm Continent, there were no blind cultivators. His habitual thinking led him to assume that a young man in the Spirit Platform Realm who acted no differently from anyone else couldn’t possibly be blind.
After all, unlike missing limbs, the eyes are the windows to the soul. Being blind was a much greater obstacle to cultivation than other physical disabilities.
For this young man to have reached this level of cultivation at his age, he must have endured countless hardships.
Gu couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration, without a trace of embarrassment at being publicly deceived. This was simply his nature – he rejoiced at seeing someone diligent and devoted to the Dao, and he despised those who wasted their talents through laziness.
Gu’s cold attitude toward City Lord Liu wasn’t due to arrogance. In their youth, Gu had discovered that City Lord Liu often pretended to be diligent while indulging in debauchery and wasting his time. While their fellow disciples were fooled by his facade and showered him with precious resources, Gu had exposed him only to be ostracized. When City Lord Liu failed to break through to the next realm and had to leave the sect, he begged their master for a position as a city lord, clinging to the Mystic Firmament Sect’s resources. Gu despised such people, believing that they tainted the pursuit of the Dao.
But Gu wasn’t a naive fool. He had already figured out that today’s incident was staged to embarrass him.
He looked at the upright young man and then at the bowing City Lord Liu and understood everything.
Blindness was the key detail about this young man. City Lord Liu, while seemingly defending him, had deliberately left out this crucial information, hoping to see Gu make a mistake in front of everyone.
Sighing, Gu shook his head. He had thought that sixty years of worldly experience would have strengthened his junior brother’s resolve to pursue the Dao. Instead, he remained the same petty and vindictive person he had always been.
