With that, he stepped away from the fire, heading toward the perimeter where his patrols were making their rounds. The night was cold, the kind of chill that settled deep in the bones, but he barely noticed. His mind was too focused on what lay ahead.

Sico stepped away from the warmth of the fire, the cold night air biting at his skin as he made his way toward the perimeter. The darkness was thick, broken only by the faint glow of the moon and the occasional flicker of a flashlight in the distance. He could hear the low murmur of voices as he approached the first patrol team—two recruits, huddled close together, their rifles slung over their shoulders. They straightened up as they saw him approaching, their tired faces lighting up with a mix of respect and relief.

"General," one of them greeted, his voice low but steady. The other nodded in acknowledgment, his breath visible in the cold air.

"How's it looking out here?" Sico asked, his tone calm but firm. He scanned the darkness beyond them, his eyes adjusting to the shadows. The Commonwealth was never truly silent, but tonight it felt eerily still, as if the land itself was holding its breath.

"Quiet so far," the first recruit replied, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Haven't seen or heard anything suspicious. Just the usual—wind, distant gunfire, the occasional howl. Nothing we can't handle."

Sico nodded, his gaze lingering on the horizon. "Good. Stay sharp. Raiders might be lying low, but they're not stupid. They'll try something if they think we're vulnerable."

"We won't let them get close," the second recruit said, his voice firm despite the exhaustion etched into his face. "We've got this covered."

Sico gave them a small, approving smile. "I know you do. Just remember, if you see anything—anything at all—you sound the alarm. Don't try to handle it on your own."

"Yes, sir," they both replied in unison, their voices carrying a quiet determination.

Sico lingered for a moment longer, his eyes scanning the darkness one last time before he turned to leave. "Get some rest when your shift's over. We've got a long day ahead of us tomorrow."

"Will do, General," the first recruit said, his tone lighter now, as if Sico's presence had lifted some of the weight off their shoulders.

Sico made his way back to the camp, his boots crunching softly against the gravel. The fire was still burning, though it had died down to a low, steady glow. Most of the recruits were asleep now, their forms curled up under blankets or makeshift bedding. A few still sat near the fire, their faces shadowed and pensive, but even they looked like they were moments away from succumbing to exhaustion.

Sarah was still awake, her sharp eyes scanning the camp as she sipped from a tin cup. She glanced up as Sico approached, her expression softening just a fraction. "Everything good out there?"

"For now," Sico replied, lowering himself onto a nearby crate. He rubbed his hands together, trying to chase away the chill that had settled into his bones. "Patrols are holding up. No signs of trouble."

"Good," Sarah said, her voice quiet but firm. "We'll need all the rest we can get before we move out."

Sico nodded, his gaze drifting to the sleeping forms around them. "You should get some sleep too. I'll take first watch."

Sarah raised an eyebrow, her lips quirking into a faint smirk. "You sure about that? You look like you're about to fall over."

Sico chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I'll manage. Besides, I've got a feeling sleep won't come easy tonight anyway."

Sarah studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable, before she finally nodded. "Alright. But don't push yourself too hard. We need you sharp tomorrow."

"I'll be fine," Sico assured her, his tone gentle but firm. "Get some rest, Sarah."

She hesitated for a moment longer before standing, her movements graceful despite the fatigue that clung to her. "Don't stay up too long," she said, her voice carrying a note of warning. "We've got a long day ahead."

"I know," Sico replied, watching as she made her way to her own sleeping spot. He sat there for a while longer, the crackling of the fire and the soft sounds of sleep filling the air around him. His mind wandered, drifting to the battles they'd fought and the ones that still lay ahead. The weight of leadership was heavy, but it was a burden he carried without complaint.

Eventually, the exhaustion caught up with him, and he found himself nodding off despite his best efforts to stay awake. He forced himself to his feet, stretching his stiff muscles before making his way to his own sleeping spot. The ground was hard and unforgiving, but it was better than nothing. He lay down, pulling his blanket over himself, and closed his eyes. Sleep came slowly, but when it did, it was deep and dreamless.

---

The next morning, Sico woke to the sound of voices and the clatter of gear being packed up. The camp was alive with activity, the recruits moving with a sense of purpose as they prepared to move out. Sico sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, and took in the scene around him. Sarah was at the center of it all, her voice carrying over the noise as she directed the recruits.

"Pack it up, people! We move out in ten!" she called, her tone sharp but not unkind. "Double-check your gear and make sure you've got everything. We're not leaving anything behind."

Preston was nearby, his expression focused as he helped a group of recruits secure their supplies. Sico stood, stretching his stiff muscles, and made his way over to them. As he approached, he noticed Preston and four recruits gathered around something on the ground. It took him a moment to realize what it was—a mini nuke, its ominous shape unmistakable even in the early morning light.

Sico's brow furrowed as he stepped closer. "Preston," he said, his voice low but firm. "What's going on here?"

Preston looked up, his expression serious but calm. "Morning, General. We're just making sure this place doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

Sico crossed his arms, his gaze shifting between Preston and the mini nuke. "And you think blowing it up is the best way to do that?"

Preston nodded, his tone matter-of-fact. "Raiders are like cockroaches. They'll swarm any place that's left standing. If we leave this place intact, it's only a matter of time before they move in and use it as a base. This way, we make sure they can't."

Sico studied him for a moment, his mind racing. He understood the logic—destroying the place would prevent it from being used against them in the future. But the idea of using a mini nuke still made him uneasy. "You sure about this?" he asked, his voice quieter now.

Preston met his gaze, his expression unwavering. "I am. It's not an easy decision, but it's the right one. We can't afford to leave anything to chance."

Sico sighed, running a hand through his hair. He knew Preston was right, but that didn't make it any easier to accept. "Alright," he said finally. "But make sure everyone's clear before you set it off. I don't want anyone getting caught in the blast."

"Already on it," Preston replied, his tone reassuring. "We've got a safe distance mapped out. Once we're clear, we'll trigger it remotely."

Sico nodded, his gaze lingering on the mini nuke for a moment longer before he turned away. "Let's get moving, then. The sooner we're out of here, the better."

Preston gave him a small, appreciative nod before turning back to the recruits. "You heard the General! Let's move!"

Sico made his way over to Sarah, who was overseeing the final preparations. She glanced at him as he approached, her expression unreadable. "Everything set?"

"Yeah," Sico replied, his voice steady. "Preston's handling the… cleanup. We'll be ready to move out soon."

Sarah nodded, her gaze shifting to the recruits as they finished packing up. "Good. The sooner we get back to Sanctuary, the better. We've got a lot to do."

Sico couldn't argue with that. The road ahead was long, and the challenges they faced were far from over. But for now, they had a moment of respite—a chance to regroup and prepare for whatever came next.

As the recruits fell into formation and the camp was cleared, Sico took one last look at the place they were leaving behind. It had been a temporary refuge, but it was time to move on. The mini nuke was a stark reminder of the world they lived in—a world where survival often meant making hard choices.

"Let's move out," Sico said, his voice carrying over the group. "Sanctuary awaits."

Sico turned to Preston, his expression thoughtful as he considered the weight of the decision they were about to make. The mini nuke sat ominously in the center of their former camp, a silent reminder of the destruction it could unleash. He glanced at Sarah, who had been quietly observing the exchange, her arms crossed and her brow furrowed in contemplation.

"Sarah," Sico said, his voice steady but carrying a note of uncertainty. "What's your take on this? Preston thinks blowing the place up is the best way to keep it out of Raiders' hands. Do you agree?"

Sarah hesitated for a moment, her sharp eyes flicking between Sico and Preston. She stepped closer, her boots crunching softly against the gravel, and let out a slow breath. "I don't like the idea of using a mini nuke any more than you do," she began, her tone measured. "But Preston's got a point. An abandoned factory like this? It's a perfect hideout for Raiders. They'd fortify it, use it as a base to launch attacks on nearby settlements, and before we know it, we'd be dealing with a full-blown stronghold. Blowing it up might be the only way to ensure they can't use it against us."

Sico nodded slowly, his gaze drifting back to the mini nuke. He could see the logic in her words, but it didn't make the decision any easier. The thought of unleashing that kind of destruction felt like crossing a line, even if it was for the greater good. Still, he trusted Sarah's judgment, and he knew she wouldn't suggest it lightly.

"Alright," Sico said finally, his voice quieter now. "If you both think it's the best option, then we'll do it. But we need to be absolutely sure we're out of the blast range before it goes off. I don't want any casualties on our side."

Preston gave a firm nod, his expression serious. "Understood, General. We've already calculated the safe distance. Once we're clear, we'll trigger it remotely. No one's going to get hurt."

Sico studied him for a moment, searching for any hint of doubt in his eyes, but Preston's resolve was unwavering. He turned back to Sarah, who gave him a small, reassuring nod. "It's the right call," she said quietly. "Sometimes, you've got to make the hard decisions to protect what matters."

Sico exhaled deeply, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah. I just wish it didn't have to come to this."

"We all do," Sarah replied, her voice softening. "But this is the world we live in. We do what we have to."

Sico nodded, his jaw tightening as he accepted the reality of the situation. He turned back to Preston. "When do you plan to detonate it?"

Preston glanced at the mini nuke, then back at Sico. "Once we're on the move and at a safe distance. We'll be far enough away that the blast won't reach us, but close enough to make sure it does the job. I'll handle the detonation myself."

Sico's eyes narrowed slightly. "You sure about that? It's a big responsibility."

Preston met his gaze, his expression steady. "I am. This was my idea, and I'll see it through. You've got enough on your plate without worrying about this too."

Sico hesitated for a moment, then gave a small nod. "Alright. Just… be careful."

"Always am," Preston replied with a faint smirk, though the seriousness in his eyes didn't waver.

With that, the group began to move out, the recruits falling into formation as they prepared to leave the factory behind. Sico took one last look at the camp, his mind racing with thoughts of what they were about to do. The factory had been a temporary refuge, a place where they'd found shelter and a moment of respite. But now, it was a liability—a potential stronghold for their enemies. Destroying it felt like a necessary evil, but it still left a bitter taste in his mouth.

As they moved further away from the factory, the tension in the air grew thicker. The recruits were quiet, their usual chatter replaced by a somber silence. They all knew what was coming, and the weight of it hung heavy over the group. Sico walked at the front, his eyes scanning the horizon as they put distance between themselves and the factory. Sarah and Preston flanked him, their expressions equally grim.

After what felt like an eternity, Preston finally stopped and turned to face the group. "This is far enough," he said, his voice carrying over the stillness. "We're out of the blast range. I'll trigger it from here."

Sico nodded, his stomach tightening as he watched Preston pull out the remote detonator. The small device looked almost innocuous in his hands, but Sico knew the destruction it could unleash. He glanced at Sarah, who stood beside him, her arms crossed and her jaw set. She gave him a small nod, her expression unreadable but resolute.

Preston took a deep breath, his finger hovering over the button. "Here goes nothing," he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. Then, with a decisive motion, he pressed the button.

For a moment, nothing happened. The world seemed to hold its breath, the silence stretching on as if time itself had paused. Then, in the distance, a blinding flash of light erupted, followed by a deafening roar that shook the ground beneath their feet. The shockwave hit them seconds later, a gust of wind that sent dust and debris flying through the air. Sico shielded his eyes, his heart pounding as he watched the factory collapse in on itself, consumed by the fiery explosion.

The recruits stared in stunned silence, their faces pale and their eyes wide with a mix of awe and fear. Sico could feel the heat of the blast even from this distance, a stark reminder of the power they had just unleashed. He turned to Preston, who was still holding the detonator, his expression unreadable.

"It's done," Preston said quietly, his voice barely audible over the fading echoes of the explosion. "The factory's gone. Raiders won't be able to use it now."

Sico nodded, his throat tight. "Yeah. It's done."

Sarah stepped forward, her gaze fixed on the distant plume of smoke and fire. "It was the right call," she said, her voice firm but tinged with regret. "But that doesn't make it any easier."

"No," Sico agreed, his voice low. "It doesn't."

The group stood there for a moment longer, watching as the smoke began to dissipate into the sky. The factory was gone, reduced to rubble and ash, but the weight of what they had done lingered in the air. Sico knew they had made the right decision, but it didn't make the burden any lighter.

Finally, he turned to the group, his voice steady despite the turmoil in his chest. "Let's move out. We've got a long road ahead of us, and Sanctuary's waiting."

The recruits nodded, their expressions somber but determined. They fell into formation once more, their footsteps echoing in the stillness as they began the long trek back to Sanctuary. Sico walked at the front, his mind racing with thoughts of what lay ahead. The road to rebuilding the Commonwealth was fraught with challenges, and today had been a stark reminder of the sacrifices it would require.
