Fled Without Realizing I Had Prevented the Apocalypse

Chapter 31 - The Spider Collecting Gold Coins (11)

“Stay with me for just one day.”
At Beatrice’s words, spoken as soon as she burst out of the room, I nodded without hesitation.
Six days had already passed out of the week I had agreed to give her.

Although Beatrice hadn’t asked for it, as her tutor, I was confident I could invest one more day to teach her many things.
“So, what do you want to learn in a day…”
“Quiet.”
With that mindset, I asked Beatrice what she wanted to learn, but she didn’t demand an answer from me.
“Don’t say anything, just go along with me.”
She simply grabbed my hand and left the guild.

This act had nothing to do with education, which was the reason I was hired.
But I followed Beatrice’s lead without saying a word.
Because she, who usually had a mischievous face, was wearing an expression that suggested she had rarely made some decision.
“Welcome.”
The first place Beatrice headed while holding my hand was a clothing store.
The clothing store, which looked high-class at a glance, had no customers.
It was strange considering that the street where this clothing store was located was a famous place even imperial nobles frequently visited.
And that curiosity was immediately resolved by the employee’s next statement.
“As requested, this clothing store is yours for these two hours.”
“…What?”
Beatrice had personally rented the entire clothing store.
I couldn’t know the price, but looking at the casually displayed clothing prices, it seemed to be an extraordinary amount.
So I wore a puzzled expression, but.
“Try this on, and this too. Ah, this would be good too.”
Beatrice, ignoring my expression, chose outfits arranged in the clothing store.
As she carefully selected outfits, the waiting staff took me and dressed me in them.

Somehow, outfits that fit me perfectly were arranged.
I felt somewhat like I had become a mannequin just wearing clothes.
“Hey, what is this…”
“I asked you to go along with me, didn’t I? It’s a request as a client.”

I opened my mouth to try to understand this situation, but Beatrice didn’t seem to allow even that.
In an instant, I tried on and took off what must have been more than a dozen outfits. It seemed to take almost 2 hours just to choose and wear clothes.
“Dressed up like this, you look much better.”
Beatrice smiled with satisfaction as she looked at me wearing the clothes she had chosen.
However, my gaze was focused on the price of the clothes.
There were clothes that nobles occasionally buy to go to ballrooms, and these were about that value.
Some clothes were even so expensive that ordinary nobles couldn’t afford them.
‘What on earth is she trying to make me do with clothes like these…’
“Change into these clothes, and we’ll send the rest to the guild.”
Regardless of my thoughts, Beatrice excitedly handed money to the clothing store owner.
As she had bought more than just a couple of outfits, the store owner also seemed excited.
“Shall we move to the next location?”
There was a lot I wanted to say, but I didn’t bother to open my mouth.
I had agreed to answer, so she would answer soon.
Thinking this, I followed behind Beatrice.

**
“Shall we watch this?”
The next place Beatrice headed was a tent where a famous circus troupe in the Empire was performing.
Even I, who had no interest in such things, knew the name of this famous circus troupe, but when we entered the tent, the seats were empty.
Beatrice, still holding my hand, chose not the VIP seats but the center of the general seats.
Among them, she chose a seat that was ambiguously far.
Despite the empty seats, the circus members were preparing for the performance.
If today wasn’t a performance day, they wouldn’t need to move so busily.
It seemed that she had also rented this entire performance for a large sum of money.
Then why such a seat after spending so much money?
I felt puzzled but still didn’t ask questions.
Beatrice also didn’t say anything after entering the tent and just looked ahead.
The performance started like that.
Clowns riding large balls while balancing plates vertically on their hands, animals raised in the circus jumping through burning hoops, and faintly visible threads connecting across towers that looked high at a glance.
These were things commonly associated with circuses, but the sense of crisis created by the made-up clowns showed why they were popular.
Despite clearly being in danger, they performed feats using only their trained bodies without using a speck of magic power.

Bang-!
And naturally showing mistakes to induce laughter from the audience.
At such actions of the clowns, Beatrice and I burst into laughter.

However, in Beatrice’s laughter, there was an indescribable hesitation.
“Ah, that was really fun.”
After spending another enjoyable 2 hours with the performance, Beatrice left the tent with a smile.
“Something like that is definitely worth paying money to see.”
“……”
“Don’t you think so?”

I quietly nodded at Beatrice’s question.
Setting aside the aversion coming from a merchant like her saying such things, it was because time had already become evening.
Beyond the tent, the sun setting on the horizon came into view.
The reddish sunset was the sun’s struggle announcing the end of the day.
Beatrice, who had been appreciating that struggle for a moment, suddenly opened her mouth.
“I still can’t give up after all.”
“Can’t give up, what do you mean…”
“This is the last schedule now. Follow me.”
Just like when I first saw her, Beatrice held my hand and headed somewhere.
The difference was the place she wanted to go.
Not a place for hobbies like the clothing store and circus we had visited earlier, but a place where the sun doesn’t rise.
Beatrice stepped into a dark back alley.
The last schedule.
She stepped without hesitation as if she had something in mind in this back alley, and soon stopped at a place.
It was an old door. Through the rotten wood and moss that seemed surprisingly not completely decayed, voices could be faintly heard.
“Is the plan… certain?”
“Of course. Didn’t you personally confirm what you’re carrying?”
“That’s true.”

It was the voices of two men. As they were voices I had never heard before, I couldn’t immediately identify who they were.
However, the words that followed at least revealed what kind of tendencies they had.
“The demonic energy subtly hidden in the gold coin that Beatrice, that bitch, commissioned should have completely spread throughout the body by now.”
“It took longer than expected.”
“We had to dilute it faintly so it wouldn’t be detected by superhuman eyes. Even this would have been impossible if it wasn’t an object that should be nearby.”
“Right, what matters is that she’s been consumed by demonic energy anyway. Now I can take over that damned woman’s guild.”
Judging from the content of the voices heard, one was a demon contractor.
The other seemed to be the head of a rival guild to Beatrice.
While it might not happen now, in the past it was common for guild leaders to use demonic power to kill their opponents, so such incidents occurred from time to time.
If I hadn’t made Beatrice discard the gold coin by mentioning imperial law, she probably would have been consumed by demonic energy without even noticing.
That guild leader would have then reported to the Empire about her being consumed by demonic energy, causing Beatrice’s guild to collapse.
He must have been planning to swallow up all the remaining byproducts himself.
The demon contractor must have been planning to supply gold coins and various special resources through the guild leader.
For the first time today, I could understand the purpose for which she had brought me.
Just as she had done before, she wanted me to deal with the demon contractor she had found.
A contractor who knows how to handle demonic energy precise enough to deceive her eyes and mine.
He must be at a level comparable to a magician or swordsman handling six rings.
At that level, no matter how much of a manipulation magician Beatrice is, it would be tough for her to win.
“I’ll go in first.”
Therefore, I was about to dispose of those two pieces of trash as she wished, but.
Tap.
Beatrice blocked my entry.
Then she said,

“I asked you to go along with me for today, didn’t I?”
“…Yes. So to dispose of those trash…”
“This is my last request.”
Beatrice’s fingers moved. The wooden door that looked like it would collapse at any moment shattered, and its fragments flew towards the trash inside the room.
Bang-!
“Who’s there!”

The demon contractor shouted while blocking the wooden fragments scattered with magic threads with demonic energy.
I wanted to throw a punch right away, but Beatrice blocked it with her small palm while simultaneously moving forward.
As if noticing her, the trash’s eyes widened.
“The spider that collects gold coins? Why are you here…”
“Is it a witch?”
The guild leader who hadn’t grasped the situation yet, and the demon contractor who had already understood the situation and was spewing black demonic energy.
The demonic energy leaking from the contractor’s body is absolutely not on par with her.

As I had expected, at least 6th rank.
Beatrice must have felt this too.
Nevertheless, she told me her last request for today.
“No matter what happens, don’t interfere.”
Beatrice’s eyes, saying this, seemed to have decided something.
