Chapter 187: A Thousand Miles Away, Clouded Leopard Comes Knocking (Requesting Monthly Votes)
There will be bread, and there will be girls too.
Looking at the clouded leopard whose eyes were turning green, Chen Ying hurriedly began asking in the rescue group if anyone knew where there were clouded leopards in mating season.
"Really, Brother Ying, you're actually setting up matchmaking for leopards?"
The young people in the group teased him with laughter.
"Now, there are hardly any clouded leopards in zoos, and even if there are, they're not in breeding season."
"You might want to ask the protection areas near the border in Dian Province, I heard last year that they found some clouded leopards there."
"There are also sightings in Tibet, but again near the border."
The group discussed chaotically, generally indicating the potential locations where clouded leopards might be found.
After searching around and finding no useful information, Chen Ying was about to ask some contacts for clues from the M League.
With nothing to do, Chen Ying and Little Sen rearranged the infirmary and animal shed, ordered enriching toys and small facilities online, aiming for the hospitalized animals to feel as happy as possible.
After dinner, the three of them prepared to play badminton to digest, when an unfamiliar call came in.
"Dian Province Rescue Center?" Chen Ying was stunned, "Yes, this is Chen Ying; what help do you need from me?"
"Dr. Chen, I've sent a few CT images and test result reports to your email, and I'd like to ask for your help to see if there is any hope in saving these clouded leopards."
Clouded leopards? Several of them?!
Chen Ying tossed his racket aside and hit Little Sen.
"Stop playing, there's work to do."
Old Gao and Little Sen looked at each other and followed him upstairs.
Opening the computer, downloading the images, clicking to view.
The more Chen Ying looked, the worse his expression became.
All had bones broken or spines fractured.
"What, what's going on?" Little Sen's voice trembled.
"In the border protection area, a group of bold poachers was discovered. Seems like they were in a hurry to escape, didn't manage to kill these little ones, and left them in the forest, but they were rescued."
Old Gao read the test results from the report, his face turning pale with anger.
The poachers, fearing resistance from the leopards, stunned them with electricity then beat them with clubs to death before skinning.
"Five in total, two males and three females. One of the male clouded leopards has a shattered spine, definitely beyond saving. There's still some hope for the remaining four."
Chen Ying spoke quickly as he examined the images, "They've consulted an orthopedic specialist, who said the chances of successful surgery are less than fifty percent. And since animals differ from humans, completing post-operative immobilization and traction is difficult, which hinders recovery, so they're asking if traditional veterinary medicine might successfully save them."
He was quite confident about three with leg bone issues, but one female clouded leopard had a dislocated and fractured lumbar spine, which was most likely beyond saving; even if her life was saved, there was a fifty percent chance she would be paralyzed.
Chen Ying returned the call, asking if they needed him to come over to assist in their treatment.
The other party asked him to wait a moment. Two minutes later, they said they would arrange a rescue helicopter to bring the clouded leopards to him for treatment.
"Dr. Chen, the conditions here are not too good. We need to coordinate with other units and worry the leopards won't last. Fortunately, a volunteer is willing to cover all costs, we're immediately preparing the report, and by tomorrow morning at the latest, they will arrive at your place."
Even after hanging up the phone, Chen Ying was still bewildered.
Whose volunteer has such financial capability and compassion?
Can they assign one here for me too?
After grasping the general situation, Chen Ying also applied overnight, preparing medicines, medical equipment, and related devices.
The three iron cages in the observation room would fit those three with fractured leg bones just right.
As for the female leopard with the fractured lumbar vertebra, the ICU unit was once again put to use.
Old Gao helped, redecorating and remodeling the operating room, and they took out the unopened infusion device to test it.
After messing around all night, Duanmu called the next day, saying that Sister Dai had asked him and Xiao Song to come over and help.
They also picked up supplies from the center on the way.
Sister Dai's territory was bigger, with more veterinarians and staff under her.
Moreover, Duanmu and Xiao Song were destined to go far, and their replacements had already been readied on her end.
A small room next to the observation room was also set up with floor bedding, as there would definitely be someone on night duty there, monitoring the four cats at all times.
All the preparations were made, and at one in the afternoon, the helicopter directly delivered the four cats to the Protection Station, which then arranged for them to be sent to the Forest Emergency Station.
There was a minor disturbance in the process.
That wealthy volunteer was very upset, asking why they couldn't just arrange for emergency care at the Protection Station or send them to the rescue center for Chen Ying to assist with the rescue.
Duanmu blocked him with a barrage of words,
"I've seen people asking for help, but never with such an attitude. If you're so capable, get the leaders to issue an order. You think having money makes you invincible, that you can command everyone?"
Chen Ying didn't say a word.
He quietly prepared for the surgery.
The rescue veterinarian from the border protection area, fearing a need for further examinations later, had only simply treated the external injuries, medicated, and wrapped them a bit before sending them over.
Chen Ying took over, needing to go through a complete diagnosis, and after manually repositioning, then proceed to finely treating the external injuries.
Duanmu checked the equipment and knocked on the door.
"Lucky we were prepared during the last remodeling; otherwise, you wouldn't have been able to handle it here."
The small X-ray machine was prepared specifically for examining animal bones, realigning them based on previous scans, then scanning again to confirm successful realignment, and finally treating the external wounds.
This treatment procedure needed to be recorded, every step of initial and re-examination must be documented for potential random checks.
After the clouded leopard arrived, Chen Ying immediately had Little Sen put the most severely injured clouded leopard into the ICU unit to stabilize it, as he needed to deal with the other three fractured little ones first.
Chen Ying, focusing entirely on the clouded leopard, completely ignored someone who had come in with the team.
That generous and wealthy volunteer had wanted to talk to Chen Ying, but couldn't find the opportunity to speak until she left.
He didn't give her a single glance.
It wasn't intentional neglect, but his extreme focus on treating the cats completely disregarded her and everyone else's presence.
"Let's go, Elder Sister Dao," someone from the team awkwardly pulled her, and Dao Meihua glared at him, but unable to let go, she moved closer to the observation room's window.
Just then, someone exclaimed.
"Ah, ah, ah, a leopard, a leopard."
Dao Meihua quickly turned, meeting eyes with the flower leopard standing on the opposite tree.
The four flower leopards were not afraid of people, the two smaller ones even wanted to come closer, but one of the big leopards whipped them back with its tail.
Another leopard, leading the two small ones, turned and left, but the one in the lead lay down, curiously watching them.
"Elder Sister Dao, why doesn't this leopard attack people and yet doesn't leave?"
"Why would it leave? This is its territory, you've entered its space, and it hasn't attacked you because our Leopard Sister has a good temper."
Little Sen came over with the medicine, sternly asking them not to block the way.
This medicine was what Chen Ying had just inspected and had asked him to prepare immediately for a fumigation treatment for the three clouded leopards.
Hearing what Little Sen said, the two exchanged a glance, their eyes lighting up as they made a decision.
