Chapter 284: Begin the Search

A Staring contest had begun. Neither side moved forward, and neither side retreated. The long steel-colored line now had large numbers of tents dotting the back of it, and the Empire had finally brought reinforcements. If we had the supplies to push, I really wish we could have before they arrived. Now, though, they were here, and they had brought slaves with them. There was a massive amount of force along the newly established border, and it was finally time for war again. Our forces were together, and their morale was through the roof despite the lack of fighting. To my absolute dismay, I had leaked the contents of our supply situation through my logistics personnel and made it clear what would happen if we pushed much further. That brought the Logistics army rating up for all the main army to the point where the Elite army was basically thought of as the guards back in the city. It was not something I truly wanted to happen, but my Elite army was full of disciplined people who could stop themselves from creating issues in the city. Which was now paying us more and more. For the past four months, we have taken over the city and then subsequently pushed out with our main forces. The City had calmed down. The only blight was the quick rebellion, which afterward calmed things even more as the very people who would rebel had just rebelled. Now, the economic activity through Border City was immense. Our caravans were moving supplies through, and now merchants were starting to find little places among our cargo shipping to bring new wares to sell in the Human City. Where money can be made, the merchants start to show their faces. With a new tax on their carriages, more or less, we forced them to bring supplies to the front. If they didn't, they could pay in silver and gold. This helped immensely with our supply situation and the Humans in the City. Economic activity was starting to return, and jobs were increasing. In many respects, they had more jobs than people. Some people were still unwilling to work, but that just helped everyone who did have work by increasing their wages. Employees were now in a place to be scalped by other merchants, and the populace loved it. The Farms were now harvesting crops, and the next round of wheat was just on the horizon, which would assist our Supply situation and free our army from constraints. This meant that food was still at its prime, and with the taxes deliberately lower than the previous administration, their incomes were prospering. This attracted even more merchants, and we started to see Kingdom of Arlin merchants showing their faces. A couple of problems arose when some Kingdom of Arlin merchants tried to 'get lost' inside the city. So we had to quarter off an area for foreign trade to take place and be strict about it. This made things simpler in many respects, and now the Demon Lands were bringing carriages here, too, simplifying a lot of our logistical problems. More and more supplies came into the city, and the economics of having the main army make their meager salary but be fed and clothed, needing nothing, we would give them breaks. When they did, many of them were starting to come back to the city. There were no more than five thousand soldiers off at the same time at max, but they were making their coin known among entertainment establishments, and the economy was booming even more. The situation was making it more and more to the fact that a large portion of the population now had MUCH better lives under our control than the Empire. If it were not for the fact that undead still showed up all over the city and needed to be quickly snuffed out, then I would have been able to slip back on the patrols. Now those Elite army soldiers represented safety. Whenever did a Skeleton or zombie show up out of nowhere? Call the Elite Guard; they will dispatch the undead in minutes. They will not take anything from you, beat you up, or complain. It was better than the previous guards, as the Elite Army would only arrest those who were caught in the act or had evidence for their arrest. Much to my surprise, The Elite Army received an even more glowing review from the citizenry, which made me almost suspicious. The big reason behind it was something extremely simple, though, and that was the fact that when the Main army soldiers were taking their breaks, they got rowdy. They would play with prostitutes and each other. But they would get pissed off with the humans whom they had been fighting. So they would assault the locals. Which the Elite Army nor I tolerated. Each time they did so, they would be publicly caged to be humiliated and sent back to the front, losing their time off privileges. It only had to happen a couple of dozen times before the Main army learned a simple fact. If you are going back to the city, act like everyone is a beast kin. You were going to be punished if you battered others, threatened them, or stole from them. It endeared the population and made it even easier to subjugate them. Now, with it reaching four months, I had finally received replies to something I had been dreading. Rose and I had been conversing, and my mother had sent letters back to the elder council and somehow got them aboard with the plan. Now, I was reading the letter that I really did not want to read or know about. "Dear Chelsea, my Love, Although I found your requests absurd at first, I discovered just how badly this is needed for everything to work after a lot of thought. I have already started the preparations, and by the time you send any of the volunteers back, we will have the beginnings of a nursery and jobs lined up for both the men and women you bring back. It will be close, but I have created the housing and jobs for approximately a hundred volunteers and their spouses starting from when you receive this letter. This will greatly assist in our ability to populate and create Academy City as you wish. With other developments, this is a very welcome thing to have happened for us. This is cheaper and better than hiring locally, and in a few years, those kids will become the first generation to enter the Academy. It is a brilliant idea, and you have my support. How I miss you so, Rose" I finished reading, and I leaned back and sighed. "Get a Logistics Sargent here when they are available!" I snapped out to a guard that I knew was on the other side of the door. I waited a couple of minutes and expecting it to be longer when a young brown Jackal Kin came in before saluting. "Supreme Commander, Sargent Freewind, reporting for duty,' he said, and his arms showed a tone of muscle that I found acceptable. "Good, I want you to do something for me," I said, pulling out the plans to gather volunteers from the human population, and I handed them to him. "I want you to get a squad together and gather the volunteers for me. You will need at least one B rank to filter out those with bad intentions. Other than that, I am hoping you bring me a working plan for everything ordered on that paper; if you need more resources, let your Staff Sergeant know. Understood?" I asked. "YES SURPREME COMMANDER~!" the boy yelled. "Dismissed!" I snapped, and the boy ran out, and I frowned. And so it begins. ------------------------ Hey Everyone, A special announcement.
