Chapter 3: Chapter 2
"Game Maker System? What the hell is that?"
Alex furrowed his brows, wary of the sudden mechanical voice echoing in his mind.
⟪ 🔧 SYSTEM NOTIFICATION 🔧 ⟫
⟪ [Game Maker System] Activated! ⟫
⟪ 🔹 This system exists solely for game development. ⟫
⟪ 🔹 As long as you have a creative vision and consider every detail, the system can drastically reduce development time and directly generate a finished product! ⟫
At that moment, Alex closed his eyes and discovered something unusual—a small, oval-shaped blue gem, neither gold nor jade, embedded in his heart, emitting an inexplicable pulse of energy.
"This thing… must be the Game Maker System, right?"
A faint memory surfaced—he had been browsing forums at home last night when this strange object had suddenly crashed through his window, slamming straight into his chest.
Perhaps… this was the true culprit behind his transmigration!
"Well, since I'm here, I might as well make the best of it. No point overthinking things!"
In his previous life, Alex had been an orphan. He had lived by the philosophy of "one man eats, no family starves." He had no attachments, no responsibilities—so he had always been rather carefree. Accepting his new reality wasn't particularly difficult for him.
"Alright! Let's start making games immediately!"
A devious grin curled at the corner of his lips.
"Should I remake Devil May Cry first? Or Prototype?"
High-intensity, fast-paced action games with a satisfying combat system were the best way to attract die-hard fans. Naturally, those two legendary titles were at the top of his list.
Just as Alex was reveling in his ambitions—
⟪ 🚨 SYSTEM WARNING 🚨 ⟫
⟪ ⚠ ENERGY SOURCE REQUIRED! ⚠ ⟫
⟪ 🔹 [Game Maker System] draws energy from the belief power carried by circulating currency. ⟫
⟪ 🔹 Required funds for game development: ⟫
• 🎮 Small-scale game → $100,000
• 🎮 Medium-scale game → $1,000,000
• 🎮 Large-scale game → $10,000,000
• 🔒 Special Tier: [Hall of Legends] – LOCKED! Requires independent research!
Alex froze, his excitement instantly doused like a bucket of ice water.
"What the—?! You're a damn money-hungry system! Can't we negotiate?!"
The problem was… he was broke.
The original owner of this body had been a textbook rich kid—a gold-tier game engineer with an annual salary in the millions, plus benefits most people could only dream of.
However… he had been utterly clueless when it came to managing finances.
Every last penny of his savings?
He had dumped it all into buying EXO Game Company's stocks.
And after getting fired? Those stocks—worth millions—had been completely wiped out through underhanded corporate schemes.
Alex's expression darkened.
"EXO, you bastards… just you wait!"
His grip tightened into a fist. Even though the money technically wasn't his to begin with, inheriting this body meant inheriting everything that came with it—including the rage and resentment towards those corporate parasites.
Objectively speaking, the Game Maker System's pricing wasn't unreasonable.
Alex clearly remembered that Final Fantasy 13 had cost a whopping $65 million to develop, while GTA 5 had burned through an astronomical $260 million before its final release.
And the time investment? Even worse.
"Damn it… Even the greatest heroes fall before financial hurdles. And right now, I don't even have a single cent! Hell, I don't even know where my next meal is coming from!"
As Alex was wallowing in financial despair—
🔔 KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! 🔔
Someone knocked on his door.
Opening it, he was met with the sight of a rather handsome young man standing outside.
Alex blinked, rubbing his eyes in confusion.
"…Hugo?"
Indeed!
The man standing before Alex looked almost identical to a certain "Prince of TV dramas" from his past life—except his name was Hugo, just a single character different.
The previous owner of this body had been socially oblivious, almost hopeless when it came to human interactions. Hugo, however, had been his only true friend.
Now, standing face to face with his childhood best friend, Alex couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy.
After all, he had taken over someone else's life.
Yet, Hugo didn't seem to notice anything amiss. Instead, he clapped Alex on the shoulder with a hearty pat and sighed,
"Dude, I told you a long time ago—those EXO bastards are nothing but scum. You didn't believe me. Now look at you—regretting it, aren't you?"
Alex pondered for a moment, then decided there was no point pretending in front of this guy.
Instead, he chuckled nonchalantly.
"This whole mess has been an eye-opener."
He took a deep breath before reciting,
"The past cannot be undone, but the future can still be shaped. The road ahead is not lost, and now I finally see the truth."
Then, his relaxed smile darkened into something far more sinister.
"Those EXO bastards used me, then kicked me to the curb. They chewed me up and spat me out like I was nothing. Well, do they really think I'll just take it lying down? Hell no! Mark my words—if I don't make that company collapse, I'll write my damn name backward!"
Hugo, who had always known Alex to be a man of few words, was momentarily stunned.
Then, in the next second, he burst into laughter.
"Damn right! But first, you should come work with me selling ramen. Make some seed money, and then we'll figure out how to destroy them! With the two of us working together, we're unstoppable!"
Hugo wasn't particularly shocked by Alex's sudden change in attitude. After all, life-altering events tended to transform people. If he had remained the same despite everything, that would have been truly strange.
Alex felt a warm sense of gratitude toward his friend.
Still, he shook his head after a brief moment of thought.
"Hugo, do you trust me?"
Hugo raised an eyebrow. "What kind of dumb question is that? Of course, I trust you!"
"Then lend me $100,000."
"In half a year, I'll pay you back $1,000,000."
Alex's words carried an undeniable air of confidence.
Hugo's eyes flickered with surprise.
Then, he grinned.
"$100,000? I'll bring it to you first thing tomorrow. As for interest—don't insult me. We're brothers. Just take the damn money."
After a brief chat, Hugo noticed Alex looked a little exhausted and decided to leave, waving goodbye as he stepped out of Blackstone Apartment.
The moment the door closed, Alex clenched his fists.
He would never let down the people who genuinely cared about him.
Never.
