Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 171: 171. Boris Surrounded by Maesters

Boris's dream of being respected as a skilled healer was soon shattered by the endless questions from the maesters around him.

"Can this white tablet really reduce a fever?" one asked skeptically.

"What is it made of?" inquired another, holding up the pill for inspection.

"This thing called a syringe—how does it work? It injects medicine directly into the body? Can that truly cure illnesses?"

"What exactly is the composition of the medicine you're injecting? Can it cure all diseases?"

"Why do you use something called alcohol to clean a wound before bandaging it?"

"Wait, is this 'alcohol' extracted from wine? It smells like it."

The maesters were like children exploring a new toy. They poked, sniffed, and even tasted the medicine and pills Boris had laid out, reading the labels written in Westerosi script. Their curiosity was endless.

Boris quickly found himself overwhelmed. Even his five young assistants were surrounded and bombarded with questions they didn't know how to answer. They scratched their heads nervously, unable to keep up with the barrage of inquiries.

Boris tried to explain what he had learned about the medicines from Lord Jason, but his answers only sparked more questions. The maesters were insatiable in their quest for knowledge.

"Lord Jason should be here," Boris muttered to himself as he worked on bandaging two knights whose arms had been cut during a tournament. Lord Jason had been invited to Winterfell for a banquet, leaving Boris to handle the maesters on his own.

Boris attempted to explain the concept of disinfecting wounds with alcohol, using what Lord Jason had told him about bacteria and viruses causing infections. However, when the maesters asked how they could see these microscopic organisms, Boris could only repeat Jason's words.

"To see tiny things like bacteria and viruses, you need a tool called a 'microscope,' which can magnify them," Boris said.

"And where can we find this 'microscope'?" the maesters asked eagerly.

Boris hesitated. "Microscopes are very rare and advanced tools from Lord Jason's homeland. They're not something ordinary people can access. Even nobles like Lord Jason would find it difficult to bring one here."

The maesters nodded thoughtfully. If such a powerful tool existed, it must indeed be a precious treasure. They compared it to rare instruments in the Citadel, tools that even the wealthiest lords might not possess. They hoped Lord Jason could eventually bring a microscope to Westeros so they could see for themselves whether these so-called bacteria and viruses were real.

While the maesters dreamed of microscopes, Jason Liu was preoccupied with other matters. He was preparing for his visit to House Stark, ensuring everything was perfect for his introduction.

In his warehouse, he had stored a variety of luxurious gifts, including elegant dresses, sparkling evening gowns, crystal heels, cosmetic sets, perfumes—all modern items that Westerosi women would adore. Jason had tasked his assistants Lin Xiaohan and Jiang Chuchu to procure two sets of these items, one intended for Lady Catelyn Stark.

Early in the morning, Barlow and a few workers prepared the horses and carriages. They brushed the horses until their coats shone and loaded three carriages. One of the carriages bore Jason's Starfire emblem, while the other two were covered with black tarps to conceal the gifts. Each carriage was pulled by four purebred horses carefully chosen from Jason's stable of fifty.

Jon, Bud, McCann, Marb, and Jason's guards—dicken, Kent, Rubin, and Chris—were assigned to escort the convoy. They wore camouflage outfits beneath black cloaks, their swords strapped to their waists. Eight riders flanked the carriages, maintaining a protective formation.

Behind the carriages marched soldiers carrying gifts. To avoid alarming the townsfolk, the soldiers wore expensive silk clothes instead of their usual uniforms. Jason's female attendants—Lena, Martha, and Susan—walked alongside the soldiers, each carrying gifts wrapped in exquisite paper from Jason's homeland.

The convoy, which included two additional large gift-carriages, departed from Jason's castle. The distance to Winterfell was less than a kilometer, so the procession moved at a leisurely pace. Jason rode in a luxurious four-horse carriage nearly ten meters long, its steel frame polished to a gleaming finish.

When the carriage entered the winter market town, it immediately attracted attention.

"Look at that magnificent carriage!"

"That's Lord Jason Easter's Starfire emblem! It must be his!"

"Gods, is the entire carriage made of steel?"

"How can it be so large and heavy, yet pulled so easily by four horses?"

The townsfolk and merchants were astonished. They had never seen anything like it before. The steel carriage was an unimaginable luxury in Westeros.

In the crowd, a loud voice boomed, "Hey, look! That's my son, dicken! Ha! Riding a horse like a real knight!" Old Rhode beamed with pride.

"And Jon, Bud, McCann, and Marb were knighted by Lord Jason himself. These lads are now nobles!" someone else exclaimed.

All eyes turned to the young men guarding the carriage, their polished armor and confident bearing setting them apart.

As the procession continued toward Winterfell, the awe and admiration of the townsfolk followed them like a shadow.
