Chapter 155: Chapter 155: Grazdan’s Despair
"I am the Mother of Dragons, the Liberator of Slaves!" Dany rode atop her black dragon, stopping just ten meters in front of the shivering gladiators. With her dragon spirit awakened, her voice boomed like a dragon's roar as she rebuked them, "Slaves, do you dare raise your swords against me?"
The nearest slaves, standing closest to the camp gate, were struck by the overwhelming authority in the Dragon Queen's voice, their minds going blank.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
More than a dozen gladiators, subdued by the dragon's might, instinctively dropped their swords and shields, falling to their knees. Trembling, they cried out, "Long live the Mother of Dragons! Long live Queen Daenerys!"
Like a row of toppling dominos, their surrender spread outward. Like a hurricane sweeping through a wheat field, ten thousand gladiators knelt in waves, chanting, "Mother of Dragons! Mother of Dragons!"
"Mhysa! Mhysa!"
Still reeling from Dany's sudden arrival and the gladiators' unexpected rebellion, the Ghiscari soldiers were horrified to hear the thunderous chant erupt from both flanks of the camp.
Then, squads of soldiers, waving white, red, and blue banners, appeared as if they had sprung from the earth itself, suddenly emerging atop the outer ridges of the trenches.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The ground trembled with the thunder of galloping hooves.
The low ridges and the dense formations of spearmen and shield-bearers blocked Grazdan's view, but the deafening sound of hooves and the swirling clouds of dust left no doubt—his army had somehow been completely surrounded by the Mother of Dragons' forces.
Within mere minutes, one shocking turn of events followed another, leaving Grazdan stunned time and again.
"Mhysa! Mhysa! Mhysa!"
The Ghiscari word for "mother" echoed from the slaves, shaking the earth like a sonic assault. The Yellow Silk Cloaks standing behind them felt their courage shatter. Their fear was so overwhelming that, without realizing it, they began retreating—one step, then another, and another.
Boom!
Behind Dany, the camp's walls suddenly collapsed, and a countless number of armored cavalry burst forth.
"Kill!" Dany drew her sword and shouted.
"Kill!"
Behind her, tens of thousands of cavalry and infantry roared in unison.
The newly surrendered gladiators nearly collapsed in terror at the sight of the charging cavalry. We surrendered! We even called her Mhysa! Why is the Mother of Dragons still attacking us?!
Then, Dany called out again, "Gladiators, fight with me! Slay the Yellow Silk Cloaks! Kill the armored mercenaries!"
"Kill the Yellow Silk Cloaks! Kill the armored mercenaries!"
Thousands of cavalry and infantry echoed her cry.
"Kill the Yellow Silk Cloaks! Kill the armored mercenaries!"
Realizing what was happening, the gladiators roared in response.
They picked up their shields and swords, joining the charge. Meanwhile, the cavalry emerging from the camp did not charge recklessly; instead, they advanced steadily, pressing toward the disoriented Ghiscari shield formation.
"Loose! Shoot! Kill all the slaves!" Grazdan bellowed from behind the ranks of archers.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Instinctively obeying their commander's orders, four thousand archers loosed a volley. Weak and panicked, the arrows struck the gladiator ranks, eliciting a few screams, while others clattered harmlessly off the cavalry's iron armor.
A few unfortunate souls were hit through the slits in their helmets, tumbling from their horses with agonized cries.
But that was all.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Two ceramic firebombs, each weighing over a hundred pounds, plummeted from the sky, exploding in the midst of the archers, leaving two gaping, ten-meter-wide gaps in their formation.
Two enormous black clouds of fire and smoke billowed upward.
The densely packed archers, like a field of wheat, were thrown backward by the fiery blast.
"Aaaahhh!"
Four or five dozen archers were killed instantly by the explosion, while over a hundred Yellow Silk Cloaks were set ablaze. Like human torches, they ran in all directions, screaming and flailing.
The archers, who could have inflicted devastating losses on Dany's army, were now in complete disarray.
Though fewer than two hundred had died outright, the sheer horror of the scene shattered their ranks.
Even as Grazdan and his officers bravely tried to restore order at the front lines, there was still the matter of the two dragons.
Dany and her black dragon had drawn almost everyone's attention, making them forget that the green and white dragons had yet to strike.
Each dragon carried another firebomb as they circled above, adjusting their aim as the shield-bearers and archers continued their retreat.
By the time Grazdan stabilized the shield formation and the archers managed to fire a second volley, the two dragons dropped their "missiles."
With their bombing run complete, the "aircraft" immediately transformed into "close-combat fighters."
Screech!
Screech!
Seizing the moment of chaos among the archers, the two dragons swooped down over the shield formation, leaving two trails of dragonfire in their wake. The once-solid shield wall was now riddled with breaches.
"Charge!"
Dany, atop her black dragon, led the way.
The massive beast, resembling a clumsy penguin, rumbled forward on the ground, flanked by five hundred elite Queen's Guard cavalry under Quaro's command.
At that moment, the black dragon shifted from being a "bomber" to a light cavalry unit.
Screech! Boom!
With another blast of dragonfire, the black dragon tore open a third gap in the shield wall, like a broken dam giving way to a flood.
In an instant, thousands of cavalry surged through.
The thousand-strong Ghiscari shield wall was swallowed whole by the cavalry charge. Behind them, the thousand spearmen, now defenseless, were scattered like helpless chicks and swiftly surrounded by ten thousand charging gladiators.
With no shield-bearers or spearmen left to protect them, the remaining three thousand archers—already on the brink of collapse—fell into complete and utter ruin.
The black dragon spewed fire as it flew along, leaving a trail of destruction. How could those archers, wearing only light leather armor, not fall into despair?
By the time Dany's heavy cavalry broke through the Ghiscari infantry formation, they encountered neither harassment from enemy light cavalry nor a head-on clash with enemy heavy cavalry.
Yes, all six thousand cavalrymen had fled.
Even though they were terrified by Dany's dazzling entrance, even though they were surrounded by an "uncountable" number of soldiers, even though the gladiators had defected to the Mother of Dragons, even though—
At first, the cavalry commanders and major mercenary bands had gritted their teeth, preparing to fight to the death against that cunning woman.
After all, they were men—proud, seasoned mercenaries. Being toyed with by a fifteen-year-old girl was humiliating. Even if they knew that fighting back would likely lead to disaster, their pride still drove them to hold their formation, waiting for their shield-bearers to absorb the enemy's first cavalry charge—reducing the impact by slowing the enemy's speed, just like how an uphill cavalry charge is more advantageous against a downhill one.
But then, two blazing firebombs rained down like buckets of cold water on the knights' heads.
Especially when the two dragons swooped low at high speed, the warhorses nearby lost control, rearing and bolting in terror.
How were they supposed to fight like this?
Run!
What? You talk about dignity?
Well, is the Dragon Queen just an ordinary woman? Losing to her—isn't that only natural?
Zidane, leading his "New Sons" mercenary company, was the first to flee. Damn it, with such an ominous name, how could I not run?
What if I fell into the Dragon Queen's hands, and she mistook me for the bastard son of a Titan? Wouldn't I be fed to the dragons?
As soon as the few hundred New Sons fled, several smaller mercenary groups, each with about a hundred men, immediately followed. The Ragged Prince let out a long sigh and led his thousand-strong Windblown cavalry in retreat.
A chain reaction ensued, forcing the Ghiscari generals to flee as well.
Even Yunkai's so-called "God of War," Grazdan, realizing the situation was hopeless, shouted, "Preserve our forces to defend Yunkai! Everyone, retreat!" Then he spurred his horse into a frantic gallop.
"You wish!" Dany sneered, patting Black's neck. The dragon took a few strides, then with a powerful leap, soared into the sky.
Dany's ascent was a signal—the battle was temporarily over.
"Kneel and surrender! Surrender, and you won't be killed!" the cavalry and infantry surrounding the battlefield shouted in unison.
"Kneel and surrender! Surrender, and you won't be killed!" The newly recruited gladiators echoed the chant with pride, their voices filled with a sense of honor.
The "sandwich formation" of archers, spearmen, and shield-bearers had already been broken. The Ghiscari soldiers, having been pierced through by thousands of cavalry charges, now scattered like headless flies. And upon hearing the overwhelming surrender cries around them—
"I surrender… Save me… Mother, I don't want to die…" A young Ghiscari soldier, his leg severed, whispered with a deathly pale face.
"Clang!"
Next to him, an archer dropped his curved blade and collapsed onto his knees, clutching his head as he sobbed, "I surrender! I surrender!"
"Clang! Clatter! Thud!"
Weapons clattered to the ground in unison. One by one, soldiers collapsed as if their spines had been ripped away, their faces ashen as they cried out, "I surrender!"
Dany guided Black in a circle over the battlefield, ensuring all soldiers had surrendered before calling out to Aggo below: "Send the laborers to clean up the battlefield and round up the prisoners. Cavalry, Unsullied, follow me!"
At Aggo's command, the supposed "elite" shield-bearers and spearmen stationed at the camp's outer trenches immediately discarded their weapons. From behind their backs, they pulled out long wooden planks, bridging the trenches as they rushed toward the battlefield.
"They were just laborers?! Laborers disguised as elite infantry?" The kneeling Ghiscari infantry commander first realized the truth—then was overcome with fear.
There were only a few thousand cavalry and fifteen hundred Unsullied here. Where, then, were the tens of thousands of the Dragon Queen's elite infantry?
Surely not still in Meereen?
"What's going on with the White Banner Unsullied, the Red Banner Guard, and the Blue Banner Free Wings?" Zidane, after galloping ten kilometers, yanked on his reins in shock. On the hills ahead stood neatly arranged shield-bearers and archers, their banners fluttering in the wind.
"How could this be? We saw forty or fifty thousand soldiers along the way…" He trailed off, then suddenly shouted, "Damn! The White Banner Army, Red Banner Army, and Blue Banner Army flanking the camp were all fake!"
"Turn back! Turn back!" The Braavosi commander ordered his riders to turn around.
Thus, the thousands of cavalry who had galloped ten kilometers in panic now turned back, charging toward the shield wall across the trench.
"Boom! Boom boom! Boom boom boom!"
It was like bowling balls smashing into a steel plate. One warhorse after another crashed into the thick iron-plated wooden shields, only to be violently bounced back, tumbling into the trench.
The trench was barely two meters wide. Even with the half-meter elevation on the other side, warhorses could have leaped over it with enough speed—but the shield wall blocked their path.
"Keep charging!" Grazdan roared at the mercenaries. "Fill the trench with bodies and carve a path through!"
"Thud! Thud! Thud!"
The smaller mercenary groups had no choice but to obey their coalition commander, forcing themselves forward.
But as soon as ten or so horses filled the trench, several gleaming spear tips suddenly thrust out from behind the shield wall.
"Swish! Swish! Swish!"
Knights atop their warhorses had their throats pierced with precision.
"These are real Unsullied!" a cavalryman exclaimed in horror.
"We need to break through somewhere else!" Grazdan led his remaining forces in another direction—
"Hiss—KRAAAAH—"
"Hiss—KRAAAAH—"
"Hiss—KRAAAAH—"
Grazdan turned in despair to see three massive dragons soaring toward him, with a dense cavalry force closing in from behind.
